Local and National Poets of America by Thos. W. Herringshaw Pdf

Excerpt from Local and National Poets of America: With Interesting, Biographical Sketches and Choice Selections From Over One Thousand Living American Poets; The Only Complete Biographical Dictionary of Local and National Poets of America, Containing Numerous Selections Anyone who derides the local press and its bevy of embryo writers and poets, whether they be deserving of censure or not, at once stamps himself to be a narrow - minded person with a brain of rather small calibre. The local papers are to a great extent entitled to the credit of producing, either directly or indirectly, nearly all of our prominent poets and writers as well as the humbler ones. Their columns are generally opened to any local effort that is of passable quality, and the interest and ambition thus engendered and fostered have caused new and special endeavors to be taken by these literary aspirants. Therefore, the im portance of the local press and its writers must not be lost sight of, for without them it is not at all improbable that America could not now boast of such men as Whittier, Emerson, et. Al., whose poems and writ ings first appeared almost exclusively in the local press. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Elizabeth Stuart Phelps by Elizabeth Stuart Phelps Pdf

The well-educated daughter of a minister, Elizabeth Stuart Phelps (1844–1911) was introduced to writing at a young age, as both her mother and father were published writers. In 1868 she published her first major novel, The Gates Ajar. An international success, the novel sold more than six hundred thousand copies, making it one of the best-selling American works of the nineteenth century. Through the next four decades Phelps published hundreds of essays, tales, and poems, which appeared in every major American periodical, while also writing novels, including Beyond the Gates (1883) and The Gates Between (1887). Phelps’s legacy as an important American writer, however, has been hurt by the seeming contradictions between her life and work. For example, she was an ardent advocate for women’s rights both inside and outside marriage, but her stories seem to glorify the sort of extreme self-sacrifice associated with the most conservative domestic ideology. In this collection, the editors seek to restore Phelps’s reputation by bringing together a diverse collection from the entire body of her lifetime of work. From arguments for suffrage to harrowing tales of Reconstruction, these essays, along with short fiction and poetry, provide a new perspective on a major American writer from the later nineteenth century.

Robert Penn Warren by Mark Royden Winchell Pdf

At least since the dawn of the Romantic era, it has been assumed that the poet lives a lonely life, isolated in his garret. Nevertheless, writers are not always hermits and misanthropes. As human beings, they crave the company of other human beings; as artists they need the stimulation of other artists. This book brings to light Warren’s most important literary associations during his long and active life.

States at War, Volume 5 by Richard F. Miller Pdf

While many Civil War reference books exist, there is no single compendium that contains important details about the combatant states (and territories) that Civil War researchers can readily access for their work. People looking for information about the organizations, activities, economies, demographics, and prominent personalities of Civil War States and state governments must assemble data from a variety of sources, with many key sources remaining unavailable online. This crucial reference book, the fifth in the States at War series, provides vital information on the organization, activities, economies, demographics, and prominent personalities of Ohio during the Civil War. Its principal sources include the Official Records, state adjutant-general reports, legislative journals, state and federal legislation, federal and state executive speeches and proclamations, and the general and special orders issued by the military authorities of both governments, North and South. Designed and organized for easy use by professional historians and amateurs, this book can be read in two ways: by individual state, with each chapter offering a stand-alone history of an individual stateÕs war years; or across states, comparing reactions to the same event or solutions to the same problems.
