Lord Kelvin by Andrew Ray Pdf

Excerpt from Lord Kelvin: An Account of His Scientific Life and Work This book makes no claim to be a biography of Lord Kelvin in the usual sense. It is an extension of an article which appeared in the Glasgow Herald for December 19, 1907, and has been written at the suggestion of various friends Of Lord Kelvin, in the University of Glasgow and elsewhere, who had read that article. The aim of the volume is to give an account of Lord Kelvin's life of scientific activity, and to explain to the student, and to the general reader who takes an interest in physical science and its applica tions, the nature of his discoveries. Only such a statement of biographical facts as seems in harmony with this purpose is attempted. But I have ventured, as an old pupil and assistant of Lord Kelvin, to sketch here and there the scene in his class-room and laboratory, and to record some of the incidents of his teaching and work. The Life of Lord Kelvin by Silvanus Phillips Thompson Pdf

An important component of a biography of any great scientist is that the biographer also have deep scientific knowledge. This holds true for Silvanus P. Thompson, a scientist of distinction who authored this biography of Lord Kelvin. Thompson was a Fellow of the Royal Society, President of the Physical Society, President of the Institution of Electrical Engineers, and President of the Illuminating Engineering Society--all within a six year span. He also held the office of presidentfor other scientific organizations. This biography was begun in 1906 and published in 1910. It was re-issued in 1976 by Chelsea Publishing. The work is considered the definitive biography of Lord Kelvin. It includes Kelvin's personal recollections and data. His death in 1907 affected the project byextending the scope of the original work. He left letters, diaries, and other documents that supplemented the existing information. These documents would allow Thompson to create a much more comprehensive account of Kelvin's career than was previously possible. From the Preface by Thompson: ``It has been the author's desire to let documents and letters speak as far as possible for themselves; and if he has not always been able to avoid letting his own views tinge these pages, he has at leastendeavoured to avoid attributing to others that which is only his own. Doubtless there are many of Lord Kelvin's former pupils who will find gaps in the presentation of his life and character, as must needs be when the author can himself claim no nearer association than that of disciple. But thedisciple of one who was himself conspicuously faithful in little things, must at least try to be faithful. The peculiar and affectionate admiration, amounting in some almost to worship, which characterizes those who had the high privilege of that more intimate association, spreads far beyond their circle to the disciple. Let it be hoped that the affectionate admiration which he too shares may not have warped his judgment.''

Lord Kelvin by Alexander Russell Pdf

Excerpt from Lord Kelvin: His Life and Work In the life of a military leader the account of the preparations for his campaigns, his successes and failures, naturally hold the most prominent place. So, also, in giving even a brief description of the life of a leader of science, a relatively large amount of space must be devoted to his work. A whole-hearted devotion to the development of science for the material and intellectual welfare of humanity is the keynote of Kelvin's life. The author has attempted to describe the scientific work in simple language, but, owing to the very advanced and abstruse nature of much of Kelvins work, he is conscious that some of it will remain obscure to the non-scientific reader. He will be happy, however, if anything he has written induces the reader to make a further study of the subject in Kelvins original memoirs, which are now accessible to all in his published works. Kelvin: Life, Labours and Legacy by Raymond Flood,Mark McCartney,Andrew Whitaker Pdf

"On the 23rd of December 1907, with all the pomp that the British Empire could muster, William Thomson, Baron Kelvin of Largs was buried in Westminster Abbey beside the nation's most venerated scientist, Sir Isaac Newton. In his lifetime Thomson was seen as the most important natural philosopher of the Victorian age, but the waxing and waning of the twentieth century and the supplanting of classical physics have eroded his reputation, so that for many scientists he is remembered as little more than a unit of temperature." "This collection of essays seeks to reevaluate and rehabilitate Lord Kelvin, setting both the man and his work in historical and scientific context. Distinctive in bringing the expertise of a range of authors, historians of science and of mathematics, physicists, mathematicians, and engineers to bear on Kelvin's life, labours, and legacy, this text is suitable for those with interests in any of these areas. The diversity of contributors in itself testifies to the extent of Kelvin's work, and will enable the reader to view the subject from a variety of perspectives, each of which complements and enriches the others, although each essay is self contained and can be read independently."--Résumé de l'éditeur.

Lord Kelvin, the Dynamic Victorian by Harold I. Sharlin,Tiby Sharlin Pdf

William Thompson (1824-1907), later Lord Kelvin, was the foremost scientific figure of an age that saw the quest of classical physics concluded and marked the beginning of the modern era of atomic physics and relativity. Kelvin's role in the 19th-century scientific revolution can be compared with Newton's position in the 17th century and Einstein's in the 20th. Kelvin meets no simple definition of scientist-engineer. The reader of his biography will be introduced to an extraordinary figure of a past era who in no way fits the image of the modern specialist. It is just this characteristic of Kelvin's life that will take readers, scientists and nonscientists, into the wider universe of technological innovation derived from scientific theory. Kelvin's ideas are expressed in words, not in the language of mathematics. Kelvin directly influenced James Clerk Maxwell, whose work culminated in the electromagnetic theory of light, the theory that ushered in the modern period of electrical science and technology. Kelvin's work on the Atlantic cable shortened the space between Europe and America from weeks to seconds. His controversy with the Darwinians resulted in one of the few scientific debates that the Victorian public followed. Kelvin was the nonpareil scientist of the 19th century, and his biography encompasses the dynamic scientific changes of the Victorian age.

Kelvin, Thermodynamics and the Natural World by M.W. Collins,R.C. Dougal,C. Koenig,I. Ruddock, Strathclyde University, UK Pdf

This volume looks afresh at the life and works of Lord Kelvin including his standing and relationships with Charles Darwin, T. S Huxley and the X-club, thereby throwing new light on the nineteenth-century conflict between the British energy and biology specialists. It focuses on two principal issues. Firstly, there is the contribution made by Kelvin to the formulation of the Laws of Thermodynamics, both personal and in the content of the scientific communications exchanged with other workers, such as Joule and Clausius. Secondly, there is Kelvin’s impact on the wider field of science such as thermoelectricity and geology (determination of the age of the earth). Of late a number of studies and initiatives, including the Centenary celebrations of Kelvin’s death and exhibits such as that of the ‘Revolutionary Scientist’ in the Hunterian Museum, Glasgow, have been undertaken aiding the redefinition of Kelvin’s greatness and achievements. The book also raises awareness to ‘improve our approach to the teaching of elementary thermodynamics by attempting to empathise with Kelvin’s perspective’. It is completed by a full biography, overviews of various monuments to his memory, and short ‘Stories in Pictures’ on the Atlantic cable, Maxwell’s Demon, the universities associated with the development of thermodynamics and the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Scientists and engineers with an interest in thermodynamics and anyone interested in the work of Lord Kelvin will find benefit in Kelvin, Thermodynamics and the Natural World.
