Lost Mission by Athol Dickson Pdf

What haunting legacy waits deep beneath the barrios and wealthy enclaves of Southern California? An idyllic Spanish mission collapses atop the supernatural evidence of a shocking crime. Twelve generations later the ground is opened up, the forgotten ruins are disturbed, and rich and poor alike confront the onslaught of resurging hell on earth. Caught up in the catastrophe are . . . A humble shopkeeper compelled to leave her tiny village deep in Mexico to preach in America A minister wracked with guilt for loving the wrong woman An unimaginably wealthy man, blinded to the consequences of his grand plans A devoted father and husband driven to a horrible discovery that changes everything Will the evil that destroyed the Misión de Santa Dolores rise to overwhelm them, or will they beat back the terrible desires that left the mission’s good Franciscan founder standing in the midst of flames ignited by his enemies and friends alike more than two centuries ago? From the high Sierra Madres to the harsh Sonoran desert, from the privileged world of millionaire moguls to the impoverished immigrants who serve them, Athol Dickson once again weaves a gripping story of suspense that spans centuries and cultures to explore the abiding possibility of miracles.

Nigeria's Christian Revolution by Richard Burgess Pdf

Nigeria has become the arena of one of the most remarkable religious movements of recent times, reflecting the shift in the global center of Christianity from the North to the South. This book tells the story of one sector of this movement from its root in the Nigerian civil war to the turn of the new millenium. It describes a revival that occurred among the Igbo people of Eastern Nigeria and the new Pentecostal churches it generated and documents the changes that have occurred as the movement has responded to global flows and local demands. As such, it explores the nature of revivalist and Pentecostal experience but does so against the backdrop of local socio-political and economic developments, such as decolonization and civil war, as well broader processes, such as modernization and globalization.

Treasures of the Santa Catalina Mountains by Robert E. Zucker Pdf

The famous legend of the Iron Door Mine, a forgotten mission and a lost city somewhere in the Santa Catalina Mountains, north of Tucson, Arizona, has lured prospectors and treasure hunters for hundreds of years. The discoveries of early Spanish placer mining sites, stone ruins, and stories of the mountains only fueled speculation about the riches still left behind. Common knowledge among the locals eventually gained legendary status. Even more surprising was the abundance in gold, silver, and copper etched into the mountains. These stories became embedded in Arizona’s early history and were spun into some sensational legends and featured in numerous literary and film adventures. "Treasures of the Santa Catalina Mountains" explores the legends and history of the Catalinas, compiled from out-of-print books, magazines, newspapers and recollections from local prospectors. More than 430 pages and over 1,200 references.

Wings Over the Pacific by Lew Schaeffer Pdf

This manuscript depicts the personal experiences of a teenager in WWII. He entered the service with the dream of flying. After numerous training schools he was sent overseas as a tail gunner on a B-29. His first mission over Japan was mining a port city. Mining missions were considered the most dangerous type of mission. His detailed description of the mission is so detailed and lucid that the reader can vicariously live through the experience. The reader can visualize the black puffs of smoke from the AA guns as well the numerous search lights piercing the black sky to lock onto the B-29's. The war ended after his 13th mission. Included in the book is a picture of Hiroshima after the "A bomb" had been dropped. While delivering supplies to our prisoners of war held by the Japanese, he flew over Hiroshima. The sight was appalling.

The Mission Walker by Edie Littlefield Sundby Pdf

Audie Award Finalist for best inspirational book! IMAGE AWARD (Native Daughters of the Golden West) "The Mission Walker is a marvelous book, a moving meditation on the relationships between courage and faith, endurance and transcendence." Randall Sullivan, Creator, The Miracle Detective, Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) Have you ever wanted to just start walking, and never ever stop? To leave behind “WHO I AM” to find “WHO I AM.” Walking alone, and with one lung (the other lost to cancer), Edie Littlefield Sundby became the first person in history to walk the 1,600-mile El Camino Real de las Californias mission trail through the mountain wilderness of Mexico and one of the hottest deserts on earth, and across the border to Northern California - a walk that elevated her life with meaning and purpose that transcended pain and fear – and healed her broken body. THE MISSION WALKER is a first-hand account of harrowing adventure along the old Jesuit mission trail in Baja California Mexico -- desert heat and cold, walls of cactus, sleeplessness, hunger, both physical and spiritual exhaustion, the dangers of wild creatures, and encounters with drug smugglers and weeks with no water other than what a pack mule could carry; and the tortuous agony and transcendent beauty of walking the northern half of the mission trail through California, a trek Edie made six months after losing her right lung to cancer – a journey that restored health and spirit after fighting recurrent stage 4 cancer, including 79 rounds of chemotherapy, four radical surgeries (liver, lung, colon/stomach, and throat), and dozens of radiation treatments. Edie’s story is both an adventure story and a reflection on the universal experience of confronting our own mortality. It is a story of what we will do when faced with the potential end of our life. What do we do with our time left on earth. And how much do we still really, truly want to live. The book cites more than 50 original historical sources and captures the untamed wilderness adventure experienced for centuries along the old Jesuit and Franciscan mission trail that unites California and Mexico and defines the Old West. For those who crave a spirit of adventure, who ache like Edie to know what our bodies and spirits are truly capable of, this book is a must-read. A true testament to faith, courage, and the power of hope. Editorial Reviews: "Edie Sundby’s account of her amazing trek along the entirety of the 1,600-mile California Mission Trail is not only captivating and inspiring but also one heck of an outdoors adventure." Les Standiford, Author and Historian "This powerful story of determination and faith will stay with you forever." Ken Budd Journalist/Author “… a gripping narrative that takes us through the author’s harrowing journeys, inward and outward.” JoBeth McDaniel Journalist/Author "The Mission Walker is a marvelous book, a moving meditation on the relationships between courage and faith, endurance and transcendence." The Braided Dream by Randolph Paul Runyon Pdf

Robert Penn Warren's reputation as a poet, though always considerable, has soared in the last decade, as indicated by his recent selection as America's first poet laureate. The Braided Dream is one of the first book-length studies of the poetry that has led to Warren's recent rise to eminence and the first to consider his final collection, Altitudes and Extensions. In a communicable, jargon-free style that will appeal to the nonacademic reader as well as the serious scholar, Randolph Paul Runyon provides a detailed and illuminating guide to a body of poetry that, despite its greatness, has until now seemed resistant to full understanding. Every poem of Warren's last four sequences—Now and Then, Being Here, Rumor Verified, and Altitudes and Extensions—is given a close reading, with a precise laying-out of words, phrases, and recurring images that not only enrich the texture of the poetry but are themselves the texture. Runyon demonstrates the relevance of Freud's concept of the dream work of the unconscious to a reading of this tightly interwoven poetry. He shows how Warren's poems assume additional meanings by the poet's very arrangement of them, deepening his thesis by arguing that "poems eat poems" as each reuses and reconceptualizes the imagery of its predecessor, frequently with ironic or parodic effect.

The Enchanted Quest of Dana and Ginger Lamb by Julie Huffman-klinkowitz,Jerome Klinkowitz Pdf

Bestselling authors, sensational lecturers, documentary filmmakers, amateur archaeologists, spies for FDR—Dana and Ginger Lamb led the life of Indiana Jones long before the movie icon was ever scripted. “We blaze the trail,” Ginger said, “and the scientists follow.” The Enchanted Quest of Dana and Ginger Lamb is the first biography of this captivating, entrepreneurial couple. In southern California, they started married life in 1933 by building a canoe. With only $4.10 in their pockets, they paddled to Central America and through the Panama Canal. Three years later they returned triumphant, bearing a photographic record of the amazing trek that made them famous. After releasing their bestselling book, Enchanted Vagabonds, the two became exactly that. They relentlessly lectured for the public and mooned for the media until they were able to fund more exotic voyages to remote jungles and rivers. So convincing were they on the circuit that their most powerful fan, President Franklin Roosevelt, coerced J. Edgar Hoover into hiring the Lambs as spies in Mexico. After World War II, they launched their Quest for the Lost City, which yielded another book and documentary. Drawing on historical records, the Lambs' books and letters, and recently declassified espionage documents, biographers Julie Huffman-klinkowitz and Jerome Klinkowitz show how the Lambs succeeded in marketing their conquests and films to armchair explorers around the world and how they became, in popular imagination, the quintessential American adventurers.
