Louisiana: A History by Joe Gray Taylor Pdf

From the earliest colonists through the latest Mardi Gras, Louisiana has had a history as exotic as that of any state. Even its political corruption--extending from French governors for whom office was exploitable property through the "Louisiana Hayride" following the death of Huey Long--seems to have had a glamorous side. Handing the colony of Louisiana back and forth between their empires, the French and Spanish left a legacy that lives in such forms as the architecture of the Vieux Carre and a civil law deriving from the Napoleonic Code. Acadian refugees, German farmers, black slaves and free blacks, along with Italians, Irish, and the "Kaintucks" who helped Andrew Jackson win the Battle of New Orleans added to the state's distinctiveness. Made rich by sugar cane, cotton, and Mississippi River commerce before the Civil War, Louisiana faced poverty afterward. Battles between Bourbon Democrats and Reconstruction Republicans followed, ultimately involving the Custom House Ring and the Knights of the White Camelia. By methods that remain controversial, Huey Long ended "government by gentlemen" with economic transformations other had sought. Gas, oil, and industrialization have additionally "Americanized" the state. Something of Louisiana's historic joie de vivre remains, however, to the gratification of residents and visitors alike; both will enjoy Joe Gray Taylor's telling of the story.

Louisiana Aviation by Vincent P. Caire Pdf

At the beginning of the twentieth century the skies presented a new frontier, one that attracted daredevils, businessmen, politicians, and engineers enticed by a new form of transportation. Louisiana entrepreneurs and pilots proved instrumental in ushering in the Golden Age of Aviation. They advanced aircraft design, revolutionized aerial crop dusting, pioneered airmail routes, pushed the limits of stunt flying, and entertained spectators with air races. A pilot and freelance writer with more than twenty years of experience in the aviation industry, Vincent P. Caire chronicles the state's history of flight in 196 vintage and contemporary photographs, many never-before published. Photos of early aviation pioneer John Moisant, air racing champion General James Doolittle, barnstormer Roscoe Turner, aircraft designer James Wedell, and founder of Delta Airlines C. E. Woolman reflect Louisiana's zeal for aeronautics. Caire explains how the efforts of Senator Huey P. Long and Harry P. Williams, co-owner of the Wedell-Williams Air Service in Patterson, Louisiana, influenced the development of viable airmail routes throughout the southeastern United States. Rarely seen photographs depict the Art Deco elegance of the first modern, multioperational passenger terminal in the nation -- Shushan Airport in New Orleans. A captivating visual tour spanning one hundred years, Louisiana Aviation celebrates the state's air history, evident in Louisiana's seventy airports, 5,000 aircraft, 7,000 pilots, and numerous airshows in operation today.

The Favrot Family of Louisiana by G. Martin Moeller Jr Pdf

The Favrot family is among the most venerable in Louisiana, with a continuous presence there dating to 1728. From the French colonial period, through four decades of Spanish colonial rule, followed by U.S. statehood, secession, and the Civil War, and ultimately into the modern era, the Favrots have remained influential. The family's story offers a lens through which to view the complex and often-turbulent history of Louisiana. This book traces the story of eight generations of the Favrot family, with a focus on the direct line from Joseph-Claude to Henri Mortimer, Jr. The narrative is based in large parts on material from the Favrot Family Papers, which are housed at Tulane University's Howard-Tilton Memorial Library. From that foundation, the book places the family's personal experiences and observations into the broader context of Louisiana history.

An Untractable Country by Craig A. Bauer Pdf

Louisiana's sixth largest city, Kenner, is often looked upon simply as a suburb of New Orleans and home to Louis Armstrong International Airport. An Untractable Country: The History of Kenner, Louisiana, reveals that Kenner has its own unique and dynamic history separate from that of New Orleans. This is the first book-length narrative of the three-hundred-year-long story of the people and events that transformed an area located along the Mississippi River, approximately thirteen miles upriver from the Crescent City, from a grassy Indian hunting ground to one of Louisiana's largest municipalities. From its earliest times as the colonial settlement of Cannes Brûlées, through its incarnation as the small antebellum town of Kennerville, to its rapid growth as a suburban bedroom community during the second half of the twentieth century, the story of Kenner exemplifies life in communities across the state and fills an important void in the greater mosaic of the story of Louisiana. Louisiana Film History by Edwin E. Poole,Ed Poole,Susan T. Poole Pdf

This excellent reference book is the first complete history and development of the vibrant film industry in Louisiana, dubbed Hollywood on the Bayou. Told through dozens of movie posters and stills and many fascionating details, it takes readers from the birth of the cinema in 1896, its early struggles, and on to the current plethora of film companies working in the state. Ed and Susan Poole, 30-year film accessory collectors and researchers in Gretna, LA, take us behind the scenes to explain Louisiana film lore and allure in characters such as Morgus the Magnificent, Evangeline, and the Vampire Lestat. They look at the state's diverse ethnic heritage and natural venues that inspire film makers, not to mention genres and topics only Louisiana can conjure: voodoo, Mardi Gras, cities of the dead, and Creole and Cajun cultures and dialects. Louisiana now ranks third in the country in film production, bested only by California and New York. This is the only complete reference book on how that came to be. It lists thousands of films shot totally or partially in Louisiana in well over a hundred years and gives a history of the more prominent ones. The 8.5 x 11 inch perfect bound book is richly illustrated by dozens of movie posters and stills from the Pooles' personal collection, reminders of the major national and international influence of Louisiana in cinema.

A History of French Louisiana by Marcel Giraud Pdf

The first four volumes of Marcel Giraud's History of French Louisiana, published in France between 1951 and 1974, represent the most exhaustive and authoritative scholarly study of France's establishment in the lower Mississippi Valley. In this fifth and final volume of Giraud's magnum opus, published in the United States for the first time ain a translation by Brian Pearce, Giraud unravels the complex story of the Company of the Indies between 1723 and 1731 and traces the development of the Louisiana colony during those difficult years. When the Company of the Indies was reorganized after the defection of Scotsman John Law, its leaders faced economic and political conflicts in both France and America. Managerial abuses and power struggles within the new system often interfered with the administrative process and created divisions of loyalties among officials and settlers. Political leaders were not, however, the only ones struggling for control within the new territory. As Giraud relates, Jesuit and capuchin religious leaders were also at odds with one another over the division of territory in which they were to minister. Giraud explores the strained relationship between the two orders and the political motives an associations that influenced their leaders. Despite political and religious turmoil within the territory, the foundations of colonial society were being laid in New Orleans and Mobile. Attributing the growth of these areas to agricultural expansion and to the introduction of slavery, Giraud offers a lively, detailed description of the economic and social development of Louisiana's nascent urban centers. Giraud also traces the expansion of colonial control into the interior of the colony -- the Illinois country, Nachitoches, and the Natchez country. It was the neglect of the defense of these outposts, blamed by Giraud of the Company's emphasis on economic development and its strict fund-sharing policy, that ultimately resulted in its downfall. On November 28, 1729, angry Indians attacked the small French garrison in Natchez, massacring numerous soldiers and civilians. This attack marked the beginning of war with the Natchez tribe and the withdrawal of the Company of the Indies from Louisiana.
