How to Love a Jamaican by Alexia Arthurs Pdf

“In these kaleidoscopic stories of Jamaica and its diaspora we hear many voices at once. All of them convince and sing. All of them shine.”—Zadie Smith An O: The Oprah Magazine “Top 15 Best of the Year” • A Well-Read Black Girl Pick Tenderness and cruelty, loyalty and betrayal, ambition and regret—Alexia Arthurs navigates these tensions to extraordinary effect in her debut collection about Jamaican immigrants and their families back home. Sweeping from close-knit island communities to the streets of New York City and midwestern university towns, these eleven stories form a portrait of a nation, a people, and a way of life. In “Light-Skinned Girls and Kelly Rowlands,” an NYU student befriends a fellow Jamaican whose privileged West Coast upbringing has blinded her to the hard realities of race. In “Mash Up Love,” a twin’s chance sighting of his estranged brother—the prodigal son of the family—stirs up unresolved feelings of resentment. In “Bad Behavior,” a couple leave their wild teenage daughter with her grandmother in Jamaica, hoping the old ways will straighten her out. In “Mermaid River,” a Jamaican teenage boy is reunited with his mother in New York after eight years apart. In “The Ghost of Jia Yi,” a recently murdered student haunts a despairing Jamaican athlete recruited to an Iowa college. And in “Shirley from a Small Place,” a world-famous pop star retreats to her mother’s big new house in Jamaica, which still holds the power to restore something vital. Alexia Arthurs emerges in this vibrant, lyrical, intimate collection as one of fiction’s most dynamic and essential authors. Praise for How to Love a Jamaican “A sublime short-story collection from newcomer Alexia Arthurs that explores, through various characters, a specific strand of the immigrant experience.”—Entertainment Weekly “With its singular mix of psychological precision and sun-kissed lyricism, this dazzling debut marks the emergence of a knockout new voice.”—O: The Oprah Magazine “Gorgeous, tender, heartbreaking stories . . . Arthurs is a witty, perceptive, and generous writer, and this is a book that will last.”—Carmen Maria Machado, author of Her Body and Other Parties “Vivid and exciting . . . every story rings beautifully true.”—Marie Claire

Bad Boy from Jamaica by Basil Waine Kong, Ph.D., JD Pdf

Garnett Myrie came into this world on 27 September 1953 and grew up in the hills of St. Elizabeth, Jamaica. When his uncle went to the United States as a farm worker in 1960 and brought back Black liberation literature, he became enamored with "Black Power". He got himself in trouble when he became bold enough to put his fist in the air and shouted for everyone to hear: "I am black and I am proud." Why should people hate me for loving myself? But he lived in a very conservative rural community where all the women adored the Queen of England and all the men aspired to become English Gentlemen. Eventually, he got used to being treated harshly, became fearless and refused to cry out in pain. He would rub cow-itch (Mucuna pruriens) and scallion on his palm to deaden the skin whenever he thought he was to get a beating, but he was no longer afraid of pain. Unfortunately, he occasionally forgot that he was handling cow itch and inadvertently rubbed his eyes with his fingers or take out his penis to pea which lead to several hours of enormous suffering as washing with soap and water did not help. He was an erasable child, however, each time the people tried to subdue him, like a cork, he would surface again. As he was not getting along in the country, his mother arranged for him to live with her sister in Kingston. While he worked as a security guard, he was introduced to and came under the influence of Dr. Walter Rodney, a radical university professor. When both he and Dr. Rodney became "Persona non-grata" for their radical activities, they escaped to Cuba. Dr. Rodney subsequently went back to his homeland (Guyana) 1980 to run for political office and was assassinated. Garnett joined the Cuba Army and was sent by Fidel Castro to fight in the successful war for independence in Angola. As he was fighting against the South African Army, he had orders to kill all white men he encountered. He became a killing machine. He was personally thanked and honored by both Fidel Castro and the First President of a liberated Angola, Agostino Neto. Having returned to Jamaica, he became a successful husband, businessman and father to a dozen children by ten women while he was happily married. As he grew rich and older, however, he was diagnosed with diabetes and became blind. He became more mellow in his old age and repented his "bad boy" ways to become an influential and beloved leader, husband and father.

If I Survive You by Jonathan Escoffery Pdf

Shortlisted for the 2023 Booker Prize Longlisted for the 2024 Dublin Literary Award Longlisted for the 2022 National Book Award for Fiction A September 2022 IndieNext Pick A major debut, blazing with style and heart, that follows a Jamaican family striving for more in Miami, and introduces a generational storyteller. In the 1970s, Topper and Sanya flee to Miami as political violence consumes their native Kingston. But America, as the couple and their two children learn, is far from the promised land. Excluded from society as Black immigrants, the family pushes on first through Hurricane Andrew and later the 2008 recession, living in a house so cursed that the pet fish launches itself out of its own tank rather than stay. But even as things fall apart, the family remains motivated, often to its own detriment, by what their younger son, Trelawny, calls “the exquisite, racking compulsion to survive.” Masterfully constructed with heart and humor, the linked stories in Jonathan Escoffery’s If I Survive You center on Trelawny as he struggles to carve out a place for himself amid financial disaster, racism, and flat-out bad luck. After a fight with Topper-himself reckoning with his failures as a parent and his longing for Jamaica-Trelawny claws his way out of homelessness through a series of odd, often hilarious jobs. Meanwhile, his brother, Delano, attempts a disastrous cash grab to get his kids back, and his cousin, Cukie, looks for a father who doesn’t want to be found. As each character searches for a foothold, they never forget the profound danger of climbing without a safety net. Pulsing with vibrant lyricism and inimitable style, sly commentary and contagious laughter, Escoffery’s debut unravels what it means to be in between homes and cultures in a world at the mercy of capitalism and white supremacy. With If I Survive You, Escoffery announces himself as a prodigious storyteller in a class of his own, a chronicler of American life at its most gruesome and hopeful.

Heralded for writing “deeply memorable . . . women” (Jennifer Senior, New York Times), Nicole Dennis-Benn introduces readers to an unforgettable heroine for our times: the eponymous Patsy, who leaves her young daughter behind in Jamaica to follow Cicely, her oldest friend, to New York. Beating with the pulse of a long-withheld confession and peppered with lilting patois, Patsy gives voice to a woman who looks to America for the opportunity to love whomever she chooses, bravely putting herself first. But to survive as an undocumented immigrant, Patsy is forced to work as a nanny, while back in Jamaica her daughter, Tru, ironically struggles to understand why she was left behind. Greeted with international critical acclaim from readers who, at last, saw themselves represented in Patsy, this astonishing novel “fills a literary void with compassion, complexity and tenderness” (Joshunda Sanders, Time), offering up a vital portrait of the chasms between selfhood and motherhood, the American dream and reality.

The Dom Next Door by Michelle Love Pdf

Shy, lonely Emmeline grew up in an upper class New Orleans Creole family in a dim, cool antebellum mansion with endless rooms. Bullied by her strange, nasty older sister, Shayla, she became quiet and introspective, relying on her faith to sustain her. Her path was clear, and she'd decided that she would become a novitiate nun after completing junior college. But everything changed when her parents were brutally murdered, and though she escaped with her life, she lost her faith. Now, driven out of her childhood home by her sister, the young heiress has settled into her first new house and is trying to put her life back together. The one bright spot in her life is the hunky single dad who lives in the mansion next door. Carl makes her feel things she's never felt before, even with a simple look her way. Widower and single dad Carl made his billions in the legal cannabis market-but he made his seed money in the years before, flying Jamaican gold over the border to sell to smoke-hungry Americans. A Dom by nature, he's strongly attracted to demure young Emmeline...and is more than happy to make the first move when he realizes that she is too shy to do so herself. But even as they finally start to get to know each other, Shayla's planning her next move. She wants Emmeline's share of the inheritance, she wants her new house, and she's determined to get them both. Soon the new lovers find themselves fighting against the same psychopath who murdered Emmeline's parents-on Shayla's orders.
