Ludwig Feuerbach and the End of Classical German Philosophy by Frederick Engels Pdf

In the preface to A Contribution to the Critique of Political Economy, published in Berlin, 1859, Karl Marx relates how the two of us in Brussels in the year 1845 set about: "to work out in common the opposition of our view" -- the materialist conception of history which was elaborated mainly by Marx -- "to the ideological view of German philosophy, in fact, to settle accounts with our erstwhile philosophical conscience. The resolve was carried out in the form of a criticism of post-Hegelian philosophy. The manuscript, two large octavo volumes, had long reached its place of publication in Westphalia when we received the news that altered circumstances did not allow of its being printed. We abandoned the manuscript to the gnawing criticism of the mice all the more willingly as we had achieved our main purpose -- self-clarification!" Since then more than 40 years have elapsed and Marx died without either of us having had an opportunity of returning to the subject. We have expressed ourselves in various places regarding our relation to Hegel, but nowhere in a comprehensive, connected account. To Feuerbach, who after all in many respects forms an intermediate link between Hegelian philosophy and our conception, we never returned.

The Outcome of Classical German Philosophy by Thomas Riggins,Friedrich Engels Pdf

Friedrich Engels's Ludwig Feuerbach and the Outcome of Classical German Philosophy is one of the most important texts in the classical Marxist canon. Written in 1886, three years after Marx's death, Engels takes up the suggestion from the editors of Die Neue Zeit, the theoretical journal of the Social Democratic Party of Germany, to write a reply to C. N. Starcke's recently published book on Ludwig Feuerbach. Similar to his book Anti-Dühring, the opportunity is used to flesh out, in an unprecedented manner, his and Marx's views on the influence of G. W. F. Hegel and Ludwig Feuerbach's philosophy on their development of the dialectical materialist worldview-the Marxist outlook. In the present text, Dr. Thomas Riggins provides an illuminating exegesis of this seminal work, explaining with unmatched lucidity Engels' arguments and their philosophical context. In addition to Dr. Riggins's detailed interpretation and the original Engels text, this book also includes a collection of three other important articles from Dr. Riggins on Engels's contributions to Marxism. Published by the Midwestern Marx Publishing Press (ISBN: 979-8-218-95982-1) The publishing press of the MIDWESTERN MARX INSTITUTE FOR MARXIST THEORY AND POLITICAL ANALYSIS About the Author: Thomas Riggins is a retired philosophy teacher (NYU, The New School of Social Research, among others) who received a PhD from the CUNY Graduate Center (1983). A Short History of German Philosophy by Vittorio Hösle Pdf

The story of German philosophy from the Middle Ages to today In an accessible narrative that explains complex ideas in clear language, Vittorio Hösle traces the evolution of German philosophy and describes its central influence on other aspects of German culture, including literature, politics, and science, from the Middle Ages to today. A Short History of German Philosophy addresses the philosophical changes brought about by Luther’s Reformation, and then presents a detailed account of German philosophy from Leibniz to Kant; the rise of a new form of humanities; and the German Idealists. The following chapters investigate the collapse of the German synthesis in Schopenhauer, Marx, and Nietzsche. Turning to the twentieth century, the book explores the rise of analytical philosophy; the foundation of the historical sciences; Husserl’s phenomenology and its radical alteration by Heidegger; the Nazi philosophers Gehlen and Schmitt; and the main West German philosophers after 1945. Arguing that there was a distinctive German philosophical tradition from the mid-eighteenth century to the mid-twentieth century, the book closes by examining why that tradition largely ended in the recent past. A philosophical history remarkable for its scope, brevity, and lucidity, this is an invaluable book for students of philosophy and anyone interested in German intellectual and cultural history.

The Fiery Brook by Ludwig Feuerbach Pdf

Feuerbach’s departure from the traditional philosophy of Hegel opened the door for generations of radical philosophical thought. His philosophy has long been acknowledged as the influence for much of Marx’s early writings. Indeed, a great amount of the young Marx must remain unintelligible without reference to certain basic Feuerbachian texts. These selections, most of them previously untranslated, establish the thought of Feuerbach in an independent role. They explain his fundamental criticisms of the ‘old philosophy’ of Hegel, and advance his own humanistic thought, which finds its bases in life and sensuality. Feuerbach’s contemporaneity as an existentialist, humanist, and atheist is clearly presented, and the reader can readily grasp the liberating influence of this too-long neglected philosopher. Professor Zawar Hanfi has written an excellent introduction establishing Feuerbach’s environment, importance, and relevance and his translations surpass most previous Feuerbach translators.
