M.V. Kamath, a Journalist at Large by M. V. Kamath Pdf

M.V. Kamath, with four decades of rich and varied experiences, has traveled the world with an eye for people and a nose for news. He has met an amazingly wide range of characters from all walks of life from royalty to Nobel laureates, from film and theatre personalities to statesmen and politicians. His meetings have resulted in this collection of anecdotes some sad, some outright funny, and some simply staid. His writing in no way borders on gossip, but rather delves into the humanity of each subject. Journalism opened up vast avenues for M.V. Kamath. He lived a life of pleasant surprises, wondering what the next day held for him. The short pieces in this book are a minute collection of material that would probably fill up 10 such books. However, this collection powerfully conveys his experiences of pain and joy that run through all his encounters. He views both these universal experiences as ephemeral. This fleeting aspect of life binds each anecdote to the other, thus elevating story-telling to a fine art, that doesn t sound forced or acquired, and comes straight from the heart.

Decolonization by Pierre Singaravélou,Karim Miské,Marc Ball Pdf

Full of gripping historical vignettes and evocative photographs, an accessible overview of the dynamic figures who resisted colonization, from India, Senegal, and Algeria to Vietnam, Kenya, and Congo. Decolonization started on the very first day of colonization. From the arrival of the Europeans, the peoples of Africa and Asia rose up. No one willingly accepts subjugation, but in order to one day regain freedom, you first and foremost need to stay alive. Faced with the Europeans’ machine guns, the colonized hit back in other ways: from civil disobedience to communist revolution, by way of soccer and literature. It was a struggle marked by infinite patience and unlimited determination, fought by heroic men and women now largely unknown. Condensing a wealth of scholarly research into short, lively chapters, Decolonization brings their extraordinary stories to light: Manikarnika Tambe, the Indian queen who led her troops into battle against the British; Mary Nyanjiru, the Kenyan activist who spearheaded a protest in Nairobi; Lamine Senghor, the Senegalese infantryman who became an anti-colonial militant in Paris; and many more. With them, a current of resistance swept the world, culminating in the independence of almost all the colonies in the 1960s. But at what price? In the atomic India of Indira Gandhi, in the Congo subjected to Mobutu’s dictatorship, or in a London shaken by the rioting of young immigrants, we can see just how crucial it is that we understand and learn from this painful history.

Style in Journalism by P.V.L. Narasimha Rao Pdf

With the phenomenal growth of newspapers and periodicals in India, their styles have become as unique as the identities of individuals. Keeping track of the changing scenario in the Indian English press, this book presents a critical study of stylistic variations followed by leading dailies and periodicals. The exposition is supported by an in-depth analysis of historic case studies like Indira Gandhi's assassination, Bhopal gas tragedy and terrorism in Punjab. Also the book tries to answers some critical questions like: * Will the print media survive the Onslaught of the electronic media? * Can a journalist be really objective in the present scenario?

Destruction and Conservation of Cultural Property by R Layton,P Stone,J Thomas Pdf

In 1991 the mosque at Ayodhya in India was demolished by Hindu fundamentalists who claim that it stood on the birthplace of a legendary Hindu hero. During recent conflicts in former Yugoslavia, ethnic groups destroyed mosques and churches to eliminate evidence of long-term settlement by other communities. Over successive centuries, however, a single building in Cordoba functioned as a mosque, a church and a synagogue. The Roman Emperor Diocletian's Palace in Split is occupied today by shops and residential apartments. What circumstances have lead to the survival and reinterpretation of some monuments, but the destruction of others? This work asks whether the idea of world heritage is an essential mechanism for the protection of the world's cultural and natural heritage, or whether it subjugates a diversity of cultural traditions to specifically Western ideas. How far is it acceptable for one group of people to comment upon, or intercede in, the way in which another community treats the remains which it claims as its own? What are the responsibilities of multinational corporations and non-governmental organisations operating in the Developing World? Who actually owns the past: the landowner, indigenous people, the State or humankind?

Beyond Boycotts by Philippe Vonnard,Nicola Sbetti,Grégory Quin Pdf

Sport during Cold War has recently begun to be studied in more depth. Some scholars have edited a book about the US and Soviet sport diplomacy and show ow the government of these two countries have used sport during this period, notably as a tool of "soft power" during the Olympic games. Our goal is to continue in this direction and to focus more on the sport field as a place of exchanges during the Cold War. Regarding this point, our aim is to show that there were events "beyond boycotts"many and that unknown connections existed inside sport. Morevoer, many actors were involved in these exchanges. Thus, it is important not only to focus on the action of States, but also on private actors (international sporting bodies and journalists), considering that they acted around sport (an "apolitic" field) as it was tool to maintain links between the two blocs. Our project offers a good opportunity for young scholars to present original research based on new materials (notably the use of institutional or personals archives). Morevoer, it is also a step forward with a view to conduct research within a global history paradigm, one that is still underused in sport academic fields.
