The Rise and Fall of Alexandria by Justin Pollard,Howard Reid Pdf

A short history of nearly everything classical. The foundations of the modern world were laid in Alexandria of Egypt at the turn of the first millennium. In this compulsively readable narrative, Justin Pollard and Howard Reid bring one of history's most fascinating and prolific cities to life, creating a treasure trove of our intellectual and cultural origins. Famous for its lighthouse, its library-the greatest in antiquity-and its fertile intellectual and spiritual life--it was here that Christianity and Islam came to prominence as world religions--Alexandria now takes its rightful place alongside Greece and Rome as a titan of the ancient world. Sparkling with fresh insights on science, philosophy, culture, and invention, this is an irresistible, eye- opening delight.

Logos Arete by Daniel Lee Baumgartner Sr,Daniel Lee Baumgartner Pdf

It is the intent of this text to allow a more in-depth study to be made by the student of Greek history by having the essential data more readily available in this spreadsheet format. The pursuit of one's objective can be much more easily and quickly carried out if the student's train of thought can be maintained until the time that his final conclusions can be reached. The intent is not to give a thoroughly complete encyclopedic source of information about Greek history as that type of data is readily available in any public library. Once the names of the character, his point of fame, his family relationships and his place of birth, etc. are known, it will be much easier to find source material from virtually hundreds, if not thousands, of texts that have a treasure-trove of information that is not always being used because of the complexity involved in finding it. What this writer is doing in this text is giving the reader an introduction to the important characters of Greek history in much the same way we find out about a person we might meet at a party, exchanging general personal information like, "What Do You Do For a Living?" or "Are You Married?" and so forth. In addition, he has taken the liberty to assess the relative importance of each notable ancient Greek so that the reader's effort might be spent in a more beneficial way. Latitude has been left for some healthy controversy. Since Heinrich Schliemann discovered the site of ancient Troy, the academic community has taken criticism for their doubting of the factual nature of ancient Greek history. That has gone too far. The last century and a quarter has proven that the modern archaeologist is up to the task, giving open and accurate analysis of the finds that they have made without regards to pressure to misrepresent data so preconceived theories can be allowed to stand. The modern historians have also exonerated themselves by accepting their error and by moving in the direction of open-minded

Acts by I. Howard Marshall Pdf

In the book of Acts the story of Jesus begun in the Gospel of Luke broadens into the story of the Holy Spirit, guiding the fledgling church to proclaim the saving reality of Jesus. While attentive to Luke's roles as a literary artist and theologian, I. Howard Marshall focuses primarily on Luke's role as a historian. He provides the reader with an accurate, balanced and holistic picture of the church's monumental first years as it sought to fulfill Christ's mandate to preach the gospel to the ends of the earth. The original, unrevised text of this volume has been completely retypeset and printed in a larger, more attractive format with the new cover design for the series. The Tyndale New Testament Commentaries have long been a trusted resource for Bible study. Written by some of the world's most distinguished evangelical scholars, these twenty volumes offer clear, reliable and relevant explanations of every book in the New Testament. The Tyndale volumes are designed to help readers understand what the Bible actually says and what it means. The introduction to each volume gives a concise but thorough description of the authorship, date and historical background of the biblical book under consideration. The commentary itself examines the text section by section, drawing out its main themes. It also comments on individual verses and deals with problems of interpretation. The aim throughout is to get at the true meaning of the Bible and to make its message plain to readers today.

Jung, Faust and the Devil by Bernard X Bovasso Pdf

Jung and His Other The name Philemon has reached public notice as much as the name of its author, Analytical Psychologist Prof. Dr. C.G. Jung. This is not so odd considering that more is publicly known about the man Jung on a multi-dimensional level than many a celebrity in recent history. Much has been revealed for all to see from the level of depth, breadth and intensity that not only includes his pioneer work in Depth Psychology but the more recent publication of his secretive creative endeavors now broadcast in a lavish facsimile edition of his original closet composed Red Book: as if suddenly the man of mind and his science of the psyche is brushed aside for the man of fabulous fantasy magic. That would be to say the man Jung has been eclipsed by his own imaginary man, Philemon. Who is Philemon and by what power does he take stage center? Jung did not have to answer this question involving his successor because he insisted that the "all his life" closet work be made public only posthumously, almost as if to publicly reveal this other of his life as in fact a prognostication of his afterlife. Accordingly, in his fantasy he listens to the voices of the dead, a theme that I have extended in wider application to the world scene and the origins of Western culture since the founding of Alexandria where the East meets the West by Alexander the Great of ancient Albania (Illyria) Bernard X Bovasso May 21, 2012
