Machine Gunner’s Notes, France 1918 [Illustrated Edition] by Lieutenant Colonel Charles M. Dupuy Pdf
Includes The Americans in the First World War Illustration Pack - 57 photos/illustrations and 10 maps When the United States entered the First World War in 1917 the size of the army was tiny in comparison to the European Powers. The long-serving officers of the U.S. army faced the daunting task of licking the new recruits of 1917 into shape for service overseas. Among these officers was Charles Dupuy who was charged with getting his men ready for battle utilising the weapon that had inflicted so much damage during the previous three years - the machine gun. Key to offence or defence, the machine gun companies of the U.S. expeditionary force had to be fast and deadly in the offence and staunch and steadfast in defence. Major Dupuy tells of how he whipped his men into shape and led them to hard fought victory against the Germans on the Western front in 1918.

Machine-Guns and the Great War by Paul Cornish Pdf
An in-depth study of how these direct fire weapons were actually employed on the battlefields and their true place in the armory of World War I. The machine-gun is one of the iconic weapons of the Great War—indeed of the twentieth century. Yet it is also one of the most misunderstood. During a four-year war that generated unprecedented casualties, the machine-gun stood out as a key weapon. In the process it took on an almost legendary status that persists to the present day. It shaped the tactics of the trenches, while simultaneously evolving in response to the tactical imperatives thrown up by this new form of warfare. Paul Cornish, in this authoritative and carefully considered study, reconsiders the history of automatic firepower, and he describes in vivid detail its development during the First World War and the far-reaching consequences thereof. He dispels many myths and misconceptions that have grown up around automatic firearms, but also explores their potency as symbols and icons. His clear-sighted reassessment of the phenomenon of the machine-gun will be fascinating reading for students of military history and of the Great War in particular. “For those wanting a little more in-depth information about the role and development of machine guns during the war, this book offers an excellent, well written and easily accessible account of what became the iconic weapon of the war, mainly due to the massive casualties it was able to inflict . . . This really is well worth reading.” —Great War Magazine

The Organization of Machine Guns and Their Tactical Uses With Notes on Training (Classic Reprint) by V. A. Jackson Pdf
Excerpt from The Organization of Machine Guns and Their Tactical Uses With Notes on Training The data collected and reproduced in this little book will be of value to all those inter ested in the development of machine guns. That they will play a vastly more important part in the wars of the future than they have done in the past is generally admitted, but the lines in which the development will take place and the principles Of their tactical em ployment, have yet to be confirmed by the experience of war. The sustained rattle of a machine gun has an immense moral effect in proportion to the actual damage which it inflicts, and to make full use of this moral power it is desirable that it Should come as a surprise when the success or failure of the combat hangs in the balance. Hence both in attack and defence it will prob ably be wise to reserve a proportion Of the machine guns available, for use at Close and decisive ranges where the terrain favours their being brought into action as a surprise. The Book of the Machine Gun 1917 by Major F. V. Longstaff,A. Hilliard Atteridge Pdf
This book is a very important text for any student of the development of the machine gun, and contains details of the history of this weapon from its inception to the mid-ppoint of the First World War. The evolution of the machine gun is detailed, followed by examples of the use of the wepon in war, and particularly in the Russo-Japanese War. Tactics are examined in detail, both from the historical point of view and tactics of the First World War, an important part of the book. Training is covered, particularly from the British Army side, and the relevant chapter has much of great value in it. Perhaps the most important part of the book however is the examination of the machine guns of the armies then at war. There is in addition a complete chapter on machine guns in the German Army, which is of specific importance to any study of the tactics on the western front. The book is illustrated with a series of good photographs and a number of line drawings of both early and current machine guns, and there is also a large scale drawing of the Vickers gun.
