What Made Maddy Run by Kate Fagan Pdf

The heartbreaking story of college athlete Madison Holleran, whose life and death by suicide reveal the struggle of young people suffering from mental illness today in this #1 New York Times Sports and Fitness bestseller *Instant New York Times Bestseller* #1 New York Times Monthly Sports and Fitness bestseller If you scrolled through the Instagram feed of 19-year-old Maddy Holleran, you would see a perfect life: a freshman at an Ivy League school, recruited for the track team, who was also beautiful, popular, and fiercely intelligent. This was a girl who succeeded at everything she tried, and who was only getting started. But when Maddy began her long-awaited college career, her parents noticed something changed. Previously indefatigable Maddy became withdrawn, and her thoughts centered on how she could change her life. In spite of thousands of hours of practice and study, she contemplated transferring from the school that had once been her dream. When Maddy's dad, Jim, dropped her off for the first day of spring semester, she held him a second longer than usual. That would be the last time Jim would see his daughter. WHAT MADE MADDY RUN began as a piece that Kate Fagan, a columnist for espnW, wrote about Maddy's life. What started as a profile of a successful young athlete whose life ended in suicide became so much larger when Fagan started to hear from other college athletes also struggling with mental illness. This is the story of Maddy Holleran's life, and her struggle with depression, which also reveals the mounting pressures young people, and college athletes in particular, face to be perfect, especially in an age of relentless connectivity and social media saturation.

Fifty Is Not a Four-Letter Word by Linda Kelsey Pdf

In this heartwarming, spirited read about family and aging, big mid-life changes lead to big revelations for a woman who seemingly "has it all." As Hope Lyndhurst-Steele approaches her 50th birthday, she feels like she has it all: a top magazine job, a wonderful husband, a loving son, and tons of friends—yet fifty still feels like a four-letter word. When she returns to the office after her holiday break, she's shocked to be informed by senior management that she's out. As she starts spending her days at home, her relationship with her usually patient husband Jack starts to become strained, and her teenage son is more interested in chasing after a local single mom than spending his last year at home with her. And Hope's own mother, who she never got along with, has cheerily announced that she's got six months left to live. Hope is relieved when a solo trip to Paris wakes up her long-dormant libido, but when she returns, she finds that her husband is giving her more space than she'd like—he's decided to move out. As Hope wonders if she'll be able to make it to fifty-one with her sanity and her family intact, she discovers some interesting truths about herself and her age: that the best is yet to come.

Aggie and Mudgy by Wendy Proverbs Pdf

Based on the true story of the author’s biological mother and aunt, this middle-grade novel traces the long and frightening journey of two Kaska Dena sisters as they are taken from their home to attend residential school. When Maddy discovers an old photograph of two little girls in her grandmother’s belongings, she wants to know who they are. Nan reluctantly agrees to tell her the story, though she is unsure if Maddy is ready to hear it. The girls in the photo, Aggie and Mudgy, are two Kaska Dena sisters who lived many years ago in a remote village on the BC–Yukon border. Like countless Indigenous children, they were taken from their families at a young age to attend residential school, where they endured years of isolation and abuse. As Nan tells the story, Maddy asks many questions about Aggie and Mudgy’s 1,600-kilometre journey by riverboat, mail truck, paddlewheeler, steamship, and train, from their home to Lejac Residential School in central BC. Nan patiently explains historical facts and geographical places of the story, helping Maddy understand Aggie and Mudgy’s transitional world. Unlike many books on this subject, this story focuses on the journey toresidential school rather than the experience of attending the school itself. It offers a glimpse into the act of being physically uprooted and transported far away from loved ones. Aggie and Mudgy captures the breakdown of family by the forces of colonialism, but also celebrates the survival and perseverance of the descendants of residential school survivors to reestablish the bonds of family. I'm THAT Witch by K. Lyn Kennedy Pdf

Sexy, funny, playful and cunning. Never let your guard down when I’m around. It looked a little out of place, but what’s life without a little whimsy? The cottage was quaint, and Gavin’s plan was to live there forever. The first visitors came dressed for the Harvest in hats of dried fruits and pumpkins. Their eyes were bright red, almost glowing, and Gavin stifled a laugh as he welcomed them. He asked one couple where they had bought their costumes and joked along with them when they said they were not wearing costumes. “This is who we are, Sir,” one man said. Gavin smiled and turned his attention to the next couple. He didn’t see the look of hunger on the face of the man who had walked away. Gavin is a tasty morsel, the man said to himself. The staff members didn’t know why Gavin had come to their island, but many suspected he was hiding from someone. He tried his best to fit in with the island natives, so as not to raise suspicions. He dressed as they did, and he did the same work they did. No one was the wiser, or so he thought. He didn’t know that he need not try so hard to fit in. The islanders wanted him to stay and they planned to keep him. When he met a cute, young woman named Maddy, he was awestruck. And so was she. Maddy had heard from the locals that he looked like a supermodel, but that was an understatement. His body was perfect, not too thin, not too thick, and his face was beautiful. His eyes were the bluest eyes that Maddy had ever seen. Perhaps he would like to become one of us… for good, she thought. He would sire lots of beautiful witches, unique witches. Gavin smiled at her, and she let out a laugh that sounded more like a cackle, and it caught him off guard. Maddy studied him intently and realized it wouldn’t be easy to take advantage of him, but she would do it… for the coven. He was in for quite an awakening, this man new to the island.

Inn Over Her Hex by K. Lyn Kennedy Pdf

Gavin thought he had gotten away with murder when he faked his own death. But that was only the beginning of his troubles. There’s a pretty, young woman on the other side of the country waiting for him to open the bed and breakfast he bought a while ago. She knows what he’s done. She also knows that he’s alone and unhappy. That makes him perfect for ‘turning.’ Harvest time is here, the one time a year when the power of the witches is strongest. The island visitor will become one of them during this year’s festivities, but the witches must be careful not to scare him away from their sweet retreat before they can make him a permanent fixture. *** The bookstores were filled with old books about vampires, witches, and other beings that inhabited the island. Gavin laughed when he saw the display, thinking the islanders had a wonderful sense of humor. The first visitors came dressed for the Harvest in various costumes. Hats of dried fruits and pumpkins adorned their heads and their eyes were a bright red, almost glowing, and Gavin stifled a laugh as he welcomed them. He asked one couple where they had bought their costumes and joked along with them when they said they were not wearing costumes. “This is who we are, Sir,” one man said. Gavin smiled and then turned to the next couple. He didn’t see the look of hunger that was on the face of the man who had walked away. Gavin is a tasty morsel, the man was thinking. The coffee was always ready in the sunroom, but Gavin had no idea when it was delivered or by whom. One morning the complimentary array was just being set up as he walked into the room. “Hi, I’m Gavin.” The woman turned and looked at him. Her eyes had the same red glow as those of the visitors to the island yesterday. “I’m Matilda, but folks around here call me Maddy. It’s good to finally meet you.” Maddy had heard from the locals that Gavin looked like a supermodel, but that was an understatement. His body was perfect, not too thin, not too thick, and his face was also perfect, with patrician features, jet black hair, and the bluest eyes that Maddy had ever seen. Perhaps he would like to become one of us… for good, she thought. He would surely sire lots of beautiful witches. She let out a laugh that sounded more like a cackle, and it took Gavin off guard.

Aussie STEM Stars: Maddy McAllister by Deb Fitzpatrick Pdf

Age range 10 to 13 Maddy spent her early years in the Northern Territory before her family moved back to Western Australia. Maddy’s love of the sea and everything in it was nurtured by her beloved grandfather who would take her fishing and snorkelling in the ocean off Busselton, south of Perth. On these trips he would regale her with his many stories of shipwrecks around the coast and share his great curiosity in the natural and human-made world. Still only a 14-year-old teenager and already a certified SCUBA diver, her passion for maritime archaeology in particular, was sparked by a lecture she attended in Busselton where her family had finally settled. A maritime archaeologist from the Museum of Western Australia in Perth told the gathering the story of the shipwreck of a cargo ship Georgette, that occurred in 1876, south of Busselton. At great risk to themselves, two courageous young people who lived in the area, Indigenous man Sam Isaacs and 16-year-old Grace Bussell, rode their horses into the boiling surf to rescue survivors. Dr Maddy McAllister is now the Senior Curator of Maritime Archaeology at Queensland Museum Network and is based in the Museum of Tropical Queensland in Townsville. Her PhD research was on the notorious Batavia shipwreck of 1629 in the Houtman Abrolhos Islands of Western Australia.
