Made to Order: Robots and Revolution by Peter F. Hamilton,Annalee Newitz,Alastair Reynolds Pdf

100 years after Karel Capek coined the word, “robots” are an everyday idea, and the inspiration for countless stories in books, film, TV and games. They are often among the least privileged, most unfairly used of us, and the more robots are like humans, the more interesting they become. This collection of stories is where robots stand in for us, where both we and they are disadvantaged, and where hope and optimism shines through. Made-to-Order Lean by Greg Lane Pdf

Toyota Production System methods have rendered remarkable results in high-volume manufacturing plants, but they have not been fully understood and correctly applied in high-mix, low-volume environments. While lean principles do apply, the implementation methods and tools must be adapted and alternate methods embraced in a low-volume environment. This volume is specifically geared for manufacturers that have hundreds to thousands of active part numbers with few or no ongoing forecasted volumes, and for job shops that build only to order. The primary focus is eliminating non-value-added activities and instituting improvements on the most repetitive jobs, a strategy that gives you more time to produce your low-volume work or one-offs. About the author: Greg Lane is a faculty member of the Lean Enterprise Institute and an advisor to the Instituto de Lean Management in Spain. During his time with Toyota, he was one of a handful of candidates selected for a one-year training program conducted by the company’s masters. He became certified as a Toyota Production System (TPS) Key Person and continued his work with Toyota, training others in TPS. He has been highly active in working on implementing lean around the world, supporting large and small companies alike. In 1998, he began to focus his lean endeavors on meeting the specific needs of high-mix, low-volume enterprises. During his time as an independent consultant, Greg purchased and operated his own manufacturing company, which specialized in fast turnaround on high-mix, low-volume parts. Greg used TPS to grow the business and nearly double its sales. Greg and his associates have experience not only at adapting the methods contained in this book, but also in applying other tools that are too numerous to detail here. Murder Made to Order by Lena Gregory Pdf

To save her cozy Florida diner, Gia Morelli must dive into a swamp of crime and corruption in this “fun new series” (E. J. Copperman, national bestselling author of the Haunted Guesthouse Mysteries). New York native Gia Morelli is just getting used to life in Florida when she gets word that the town government wants to shut down her pride and joy: the charming little diner known as the All-Day Breakfast Café. A forgotten zoning regulation means that the café was opened illegally, and hardboiled council president Marcia Steers refuses to budge. Gia is considering hanging up her apron and going back to New York, but before she gives up on her dream, she discovers something shocking in the local swamp: Marcia Steers, dead in the water. There’s a secret buried in the books at town hall, and someone killed to keep it hidden. To save her café and bring a killer to justice, Gia and her friends will have to figure out a killer’s recipe for murder . . . Praise for the writing of Lena Gregory “Hold on to your plates for this fast-paced mystery that will leave you hungering for more!” —J. C. Eaton, author of the Sophie Kimball Mysteries, on Scone Cold Killer “Family secrets, old mansions, and a growing list of murder victims—these elements and more blend together to make an intriguing as well as entertaining cozy mystery.” —RT Book Reviews on Occult and Battery “As breezy and salty as a gust of wind off the chilly bay waters.”—Juliet Blackwell, New York Times–bestselling author of the Witchcraft Mysteries on Death at First Sight “An intriguing opening to a fun new series.” —E. Made to Order by Campion Platt Pdf

Clean and simple design coupled with an embrace of color, beautifully crafted millwork, and environmentally friendly materials are hallmarks of the work of Campion Platt. Every project is firmly rooted in the belief that handcrafting a home of one’s own should be a pleasure, and that an individualized, intensely personal interior can be achieved on any budget when an honest conversation is opened with a designer, or yourself, about what is most important in a home, and that this process will yield achievable, comfortable results. To that end, his firm creates spaces that are bespoke on many levels—each residence and all of its furnishings are literally made to order. This lavish color presentation of over 200 images showcases the results of this unique approach in eighteen projects that range in size and location from demure city pied-à-terres to chic lofts and grand country estates. Conversational, engaging commentary and original sketches from the designer’s portfolio reveal his creative process, explain the inspiration from which each space’s theme is derived, disclose his most valuable tips, and explain how his experience has informed the creation of his own custom furniture, fabric, and carpet lines. I discovered that Campion was almost obsessively concerned with fabrics and finishes, which resulted in a very visually rich environment. —Jay McInerney

We assume that the facil ity design issue is settled, i.e., the location and the layout of the facility as well as the capacity ofthe three main resource types of the company are determined. These resource types are the engineering department, the fabrication department, and the assembly department. The engineering department is concerned with the construction of new products as well as the modification and customization of ex isting products. This entails the generation of engineering documents such as blue prints for manufacturing. The capacity of the engineering department is determined by the the count and qualification of engi neers and by the availability of construction devices such as computer aided design (CAD) systems etc.

Evolution Made to Order by Helen Anne Curry Pdf

Plant breeders have long sought technologies to extend human control over nature. Early in the twentieth century, this led some to experiment with startlingly strange tools like x-ray machines, chromosome-altering chemicals, and radioactive elements. Contemporary reports celebrated these mutation-inducing methods as ways of generating variation in plants on demand. Speeding up evolution, they imagined, would allow breeders to genetically engineer crops and flowers to order. Creating a new food crop or garden flower would soon be as straightforward as innovating any other modern industrial product. In Evolution Made to Order, Helen Anne Curry traces the history of America’s pursuit of tools that could intervene in evolution. An immersive journey through the scientific and social worlds of midcentury genetics and plant breeding and a compelling exploration of American cultures of innovation, Evolution Made to Order provides vital historical context for current worldwide ethical and policy debates over genetic engineering.
