Madness in Greek Thought and Custom (Classic Reprint) by Agnes Carr Vaughan Pdf

Excerpt from Madness in Greek Thought and Custom The effect upon the popular mind of Greece of so mysterious a phenomenon as madness, its bearing upon the religious, eco nomic, and legal institutions of the country, have so far received no attention beyond the scattered comments to be found in works concerned with the social and religious phases of Greek life.3 Even in the writings of such authorities as B. Schmidt, Hart land, and Lawson, the existence of so rich a field of investigation for the student of comparative folk-lore has received only casual mention. The Greeks and the Irrational by Eric Robertson Dodds Pdf

"In this philosophy classic, which was first published in 1951, E. R. Dodds takes on the traditional view of Greek culture as a triumph of rationalism. Using the analytical tools of modern anthropology and psychology, Dodds asks, "Why should we attribute to the ancient Greeks an immunity from 'primitive' modes of thought which we do not find in any society open to our direct observation?" Praised by reviewers as "an event in modern Greek scholarship" and "a book which it would be difficult to over-praise," The Greeks and the Irrational was Volume 25 of the Sather Classical Lectures series."--GoogleBooks.

Greek Religious Thought from Homer to the Age of Alexander (Classic Reprint) by F. M. Cornford Pdf

Excerpt from Greek Religious Thought From Homer to the Age of Alexander The purpose of this book is to let the English reader see for himself what the Greeks, from Homer to Aristotle, thought about the world, the gods and their relations to man, the nature and destiny of the soul, and the significance of human life. The form of presentation is prescribed by the plan of the series. The book is to be a compilation of extracts from the Greek authors, selected, so far as possible, without prejudice and translated with such honesty as a translation may have. This plan has the merit of isolating the actual thought of the Greeks in this period from all the constructions put upon it by later ages, except in so far as the choice of extracts must be governed by some scheme in, the Compiler's mind, which is itself determined by the limits of his knowledge and by other personal factors. In the book itself it is clearly his business to reduce the influence of these factors to the lowest point; but in the introduction it is no less his business to forewarn the reader against some of the consequences. Madness, Religion, and the Limits of Reason by Jonna Bornemark,Sven-Olov Wallenstein Pdf

The idea of a limit of reason, a measure that defines reason and that it must not overstep, has been a constitutive part of philosophy since its beginnings in Greek thought. Placing itself in opposition to the madness of hubris, the excesses of tragedy, and the stories of religion and myth, philosophy expels its others just as much as it thrives on them. It begins and ends at the limit; it is drawn towards its outside, and exists as a perpetual attempt to find a line of demarcation that always ends up passing through its interior. The present collection analyzes the phenomenon of limit and excess, through readings that range from tragedy and Greek thought, through early Christianity and the Renaissance, to modern phenomenology and philosophy of language. Jonna Bornemark is Associate Professor of Philosophy and Lecturer at the Center for Studies in Practical Knowledge at Sodertorn University. Sven-Olov Wallenstein is Professor of Philosophy at Sodertorn University."

Some Aspects of the Greek Genius (Classic Reprint) by S. H. Butcher Pdf

Excerpt from Some Aspects of the Greek Genius This volume consists chiefly of lectures delivered to the Greek Class at the University of Edinburgh. It includes also one or two addresses, more or less popular in character, given to other audiences, and an article on Sophocles, which is reprinted from the Fortuzlg/zt/y Review. There is little, I fear, in these pages which' can be of value to the professed scholar in any given department of Greek learning. But there are many persons who have had a classical education and yet are not specialists, and who may care to have some of the impressions that are left on the mind by the study of Greek literature revived and brought to a focus. There are also some who, without a knowledge of the Greek language, have acquired a love of Greek literature and an interest in the thought of Greece. To both classes of readers this book is addressed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Discovery of the Mind by Bruno Snell Pdf

Excerpt from The Discovery of the Mind: The Greek Origins of European Thought At this point we encounter two terminological difficulties. The first arises from a philosophical problem: in spite of our statement that the Greeks discovered the intellect we also assert that the discovery was necessary for the intellect to come into existence. Or, to put it grammatically: the intellect is not only an affective, but also an effective object. It must be obvious to anyone that we are here using a meta phor; but the metaphor is unavoidable, and is in fact the proper expression of what we have in mind. We cannot speak about the mind or the intellect at all without falling back on metaphor. All other expressions, therefore, which we might to outline the situation, present the same difficulty say that man understands himself or recognizes himself, we do not mean the same thing as is meant by understanding an object, or recognizing another man. For, in our use of the terms, the self does not come into being except through our comprehension of it.1 If, on the other hand, we say that the intellect reveals itself, we regard this event not as a result of man's own doing but as a metaphysical happening. This again differs in meaning from the statement: 'a man reveals himself', i.e. He drops his disguise; for the man is the same after the change as before it, while the intellect exists only from the moment of its revelation onward, after it makes its appearance through an individual. If we take the word 'revelation' in its religious significance the same is true once more: the epiphany of a god presupposes that he exists, and that his existence is by no means dependent upon the revelation. The intellect, however, comes into the world. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Greek Genius and Its Meaning to Us (Classic Reprint) by Richard Winn Livingstone Pdf

Excerpt from The Greek Genius and Its Meaning to Us The Greek Genius is an unsatisfactory title for a book which says nothing about Greek politics or Greek sculpture; but the Genius of Greek Literature was too narrow for my purpose, and Some Aspects of the Greek Genius which I should have preferred, was already appropriated so that the present name has been adopted, and the exact scope of the book indicated in the introductory chapter (see esp. Pp. 13, I4). That chapter also explains who, for my purposes, the Greeks have been taken to be; it is intended to safeguard the book against certain obvious criticisms, and may well be omitted by general readers who are not concerned with these points. As I am writing for a general audience, I have either quoted in English or else translated my quotations. For Thucydides and Plato I have generally made use of Jowett. Gaps in the quotations are not indicated unless they affect the general sense of the passage. For a book of this kind an index is of little value, and I have therefore substituted a full table of contents. Whom Gods Destroy by Ruth Padel Pdf

Madness is central to Western tragedy in all epochs, but we find the origins of this centrality in early Greece: in Homeric insight into the "damage a damaged mind can do." Greece, and especially tragedy, gave the West its permanent perception of madness as violent and damaging. Drawing on her deep knowledge of anthropology, psychoanalysis, Shakespeare, and the history of madness, as well as of Greek language and literature, Ruth Padel probes the Greek language of madness, which is fundamental to tragedy: translating, making it reader-friendly to nonspecialists, and showing how Greek images continued through medieval and Renaissance societies into a "rough tragic grammar" of madness in the modern period.

Madness and Civilization by Michel Foucault Pdf

Michel Foucault examines the archeology of madness in the West from 1500 to 1800 - from the late Middle Ages, when insanity was still considered part of everyday life and fools and lunatics walked the streets freely, to the time when such people began to be considered a threat, asylums were first built, and walls were erected between the "insane" and the rest of humanity.
