This pilot study was undertaken by the gerontological team of the Department of Public Health of the Montreal General Hospital, under a program designed to explore options that can enable older people with disabilities to maintain independent lifestyles. It examines the potential of environmental improvements for preventing or restoring the loss of autonomy by means of an identification tool. The main objective of the tool is to identify those home improvements or adaptations that are easy and inexpensive to carry out, and which can enable older people to undertake their daily living activities with some degree of independence. The study addresses the problems of those older people who are experiencing a loss in their physical autonomy. It excludes mental, psychic, or emotional deficiencies.

The Geography of Aging by Gerald Hodge Pdf

Canada's baby boom generation is about to turn sixty-five. In barely a decade, the number of senior citizens in every city, town, and village will double - and most communities are largely unprepared to deal with the consequences for housing, transportation, and community services. Gerald Hodge uses the latest statistics to map the current and future spatial distribution of Canada's seniors and their diversity. Drawing on tested aging-environmental research and years of planning experience, he delineates the everyday geography of seniors and proposes a comprehensive framework for all communities - large and small, urban, suburban, and rural - that will allow them to respond to the needs of a rapidly aging population while recognizing the importance of maintaining the independence of their seniors. The Geography of Aging provides an essential perspective for gerontologists, community planners, service providers, and caregivers, as well as provincial and local policy-makers, to enable them to better respond to the needs of senior citizens now and in the future.

Evaluation of Housing Initiatives Under the National Strategy for the Integration of Persons with Disabilities by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. Audit and Evaluation Services Pdf

This is the final report from the evaluation study of CMHC's activities under the National Strategy for the Integration of Persons with Disabilities over the 1991 to 1995 period. The National Strategy for the Integration of Persons with Disabilities was a five year federal program announced in 1991 to enchance the participation of persons with disabilities in the social and economic main stream of Canadian society. CMHC undertook two main activities in support of the National Strategy. The $10 M Home Adaptation for Seniors Independence (HASI) pilot program was to assist seniors with diminishing abilities to continue living independently in their homes and a $3.2 M research and demonstration initiative was to develop design and construction solutions to improve the living conditions of all persons with disabilities. The HASI Program has been subsequently renewed and CMHC continues to conduct research and demonstration activities to improve the living conditions of persons with disabilities.
