Major General William T. Sherman, and His Campaigns (Classic Reprint) by F. Senour Pdf

Excerpt from Major General William T. Sherman, and His Campaigns "Never name your child after a living man," said a very wise man to the author of this volume. As we do not know what the future of any man will be, it may be unwise to honor him by giving his name to your child. For a similar reason, it may be injudicious to write the history of a living man. Whatever the future history of General W. T. Sherman may be, the world witnesseth that he has carved out for himself a name and a place in history, and won a home in the hearts of his countrymen, that can never be blotted out. It is our hope and prayer to God, that no act of his in the future may tarnish his great name and heroic deeds. It is because General Sherman has occupied so prominent a place in many of the most important and stirring scenes of the great war against the rebellion, that we have endeavored to cull the most important facts and incidents, and make as full and fair a record of them as can now be done, in order that as little as possible of valuable history may be lost to posterity. William Tecumseh Sherman: Memoirs of General W. T. Sherman (LOA #51) by William Tecumseh Sherman Pdf

Hailed as prophet of modern war and condemned as a harbinger of modern barbarism, William Tecumseh Sherman is the most controversial general of the American Civil War. “War is cruelty, and you cannot refine it,” he wrote in fury to the Confederate mayor of Atlanta, and his memoir is filled with dozens of such wartime exchanges. With the propulsive energy and intelligence that marked his campaigns, Sherman describes striking incidents and anecdotes and collects dozens of his incisive and often outspoken wartime orders and reports. This complex self-portrait of an innovative and relentless American warrior provides firsthand accounts of the war’s crucial events—Shiloh, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, the Atlanta campaign, the marches through Georgia and the Carolinas. LIBRARY OF AMERICA is an independent nonprofit cultural organization founded in 1979 to preserve our nation’s literary heritage by publishing, and keeping permanently in print, America’s best and most significant writing. Memoirs by William Tecumseh Sherman Pdf

Before his spectacular career as General of the Union forces, William Tecumseh Sherman experienced decades of failure and depression. Drifting between the Old South and new West, Sherman witnessed firsthand many of the critical events of early nineteenth-century America: the Mexican War, the gold rush, the banking panics, and the battles with the Plains Indians. It wasn't until his victory at Shiloh, in 1862, that Sherman assumed his legendary place in American history. After Shiloh, Sherman sacked Atlanta and proceeded to burn a trail of destruction that split the Confederacy and ended the war. His strategy forever changed the nature of warfare and earned him eternal infamy throughout the South. Sherman's Memoirs evoke the uncompromising and deeply complex general as well as the turbulent times that transformed America into a world power. This Penguin Classics edition includes a fascinating introduction and notes by Sherman biographer Michael Fellman.

Memoirs of General William T. Sherman by William T. Sherman Pdf

Nearly ten years have passed since the close of the civil war in America, and yet no satisfactory history thereof is accessible to the public; nor should any be attempted until the Government has published, and placed within the reach of students, the abundant materials that are buried in the War Department at Washington. These are in process of compilation; but, at the rate of progress for the past ten years, it is probable that a new century will come before they are published and circulated, with full indexes to enable the historian to make a judicious selection of materials. What is now offered is not designed as a history of the war, or even as a complete account of all the incidents in which the writer bore a part, but merely his recollection of events, corrected by a reference to his own memoranda, which may assist the future historian when he comes to describe the whole, and account for the motives and reasons which influenced some of the actors in the grand drama of war. I trust a perusal of these pages will prove interesting to the survivors, who have manifested so often their intense love of the "cause" which moved a nation to vindicate its own authority; and, equally so, to the rising generation, who therefrom may learn that a country and government such as ours are worth fighting for, and dying for, if need be. If successful in this, I shall feel amply repaid for departing from the usage of military men, who seldom attempt to publish their own deeds, but rest content with simply contributing by their acts to the honor and glory of their country. Sherman and His Campaigns by Samuel Millard Bowman Pdf

Excerpt from Sherman and His Campaigns: A Military Biography This history of Sherman's army is written in the single interest of truth. Using the authentic sources of information at our command, we have endeavored to render full and exact justice to all, and to perpetuate no errors that, under the circumstances, it was possible to avoid. It is hoped that the disadvantages usually attending the publication of a biography during the lifetime of its subject, are to some extent neutralized, in the present instance, by the co-operation in our task of many of those who themselves made the history we propose to recount. Nevertheless, and in spite of the most friendly offers of material assistance from Lieutenant-General Grant and Major-General Sherman; from the army commanders, Thomas, Howard, Slocum, and Schofield; from Major-Generals Logan, Blair, and Jefferson C. Davis; brevet Major-General Kilpatrick, brevet Brigadier-General Hickenlooper, of the staff of the lamented McPherson, and from very many other officers whose names we cannot now give at length, several of whom generously tendered free access to their reports, journals, and private letter-books; the editors cannot but feel that, on many points of interest, their work is lacking in those details essential to historical completeness, which time alone can supply.
