Making Friends Across the Boundaries of Religious Differences by DEUSDEDIT NKURUNZIZ Pdf

Making Friends Across the Boundaries of Religious Differences: Religions Building Peace for a New World Order discuses the meaning, reality, and dynamism of religion; explores different faiths, religious traditions currently influencing humanity today; and argues that interreligious dialogue is the way to go for the people of different religions to work together to enhance a culture of justice, human rights, democratic governance, nonviolence, and peace in the world today. While religion has been used to cause conflict, violence, and war, the book explains how in this time of globalization, faith and religion can be enhanced as resources for a new world order of justice and peace. The book further highlights interreligious dialogue as a methodology and way of life which brings about unity in diversity, advocacy for a world without terrorism, theological perspectives, women in interreligious dialogue, and how in Africa interreligious action is the soul of social-economic transformation, African Renaissance and Cosmopolitanism.

Women and Christian Mission by Frances Adeney Pdf

What are Christian women thinking about mission? How do they do mission? What informs their knowledge and action as they address issues in a complex world where religious proselytizing has become suspect? This empirical study explores those questions, finding congruence among women from diverse backgrounds and cultural contexts. Women in mission face common identity issues, utilize art and beauty in their work, and develop character as they overcome obstacles in their cultural and denominational settings. Through nearly one hundred interviews of women in Europe, Asia, Brazil, and the United States, a study of women's theologies of mission, lectures, and countless conversations with women around the globe, this study finds common themes among contemporary women doing Christian mission. This book fills a lacuna in mission studies that professors, pastors, and church women and men will find informative and refreshing.

The Myth of Religious Superiority by Paul F. Knitter Pdf

In this challenging book, the leading exponents of the idea that all religions are a refraction of a truth no single tradition can exclusively reveal, discuss what to make of that conviction in today's world of inter-religious strife. New in this book is the inclusion of authors from a variety of traditions, including John Hick, Rita Gross, Arvind Sharma, Roger Haight, Dan Cohn-Sherbok, and Mahmut Aydin. The authors try to make the case that the next step in inter-religious interchange ought to be the development of a multi-faith, pluralistic theology of religion.

Christian Women in Indonesia by Frances S. Adeney Pdf

This important book offers an edifying narrative of Indonesian women who find a new and powerful voice in the course of preparing to become Christian pastors and theologians in their native land. By assuming roles of responsibility, these women stand ready to transform understandings of gender differences that have traditionally governed Indonesian culture, like the notion that women are an inferior sex and not suited to leadership. In a broader sense, they join a growing global course toward gender equality and the evolution of women’s spirituality. Frances S. Adeney clearly shows how religious-inspired resistance led these women to create new practices and theologies designed to foster parity. Realizing that Western ideas are inapplicable to foreign issues of gender and religion, the author sheds light on the twin questions of cultural isolation and the complexities of doing research in the postmodern era.

Elusive Togetherness by Paul Lichterman Pdf

Many scholars and citizens alike have counted on civic groups to create broad ties that bind society. Some hope that faith-based civic groups will spread their reach as government retreats. Yet few studies ask how, if at all, civic groups reach out to their wider community. Can religious groups--long central in civic America--create broad, empowering social ties in an unequal, diverse society? Over three years, Paul Lichterman studied nine liberal and conservative Protestant-based volunteering and advocacy projects in a mid-sized American city. He listened as these groups tried to create bridges with other community groups, social service agencies, and low-income people, just as the 1996 welfare reforms were taking effect. Counter to long-standing arguments, Lichterman discovered that powerful customs of interaction inside the groups often stunted external ties and even shaped religion's impact on the groups. Comparing groups, he found that successful bridges outward depend on group customs which invite reflective, critical discussion about a group's place amid surrounding groups and institutions. Combining insights from Alexis de Tocqueville, John Dewey, and Jane Addams with contemporary sociology, Elusive Togetherness addresses enduring questions about civic and religious life that elude the popular "social capital" concept. To create broad civic relationships, groups need more than the right religious values, political beliefs, or resources. They must learn new ways of being groups.
