The World and the Word: Making Sense of Social Science in an Age of Conflict, Opposition, and Grace by Dr. Herbert L. Green Jr. Pdf

Jesus very presence as the New Testament age unfolded (1st century A.D.), engendered opposition, created confl ict, while ushering in grace. His ideas were considered radical. Why is this so? The NIV Archeological Study Bible (2005), NIV Student Bible, et al. and corroborating Extra-Biblical evidence provide a context for the Word view about Jesus in Biblical history, and supports aspects of the social and physical sciences in terms of cultural, socio-economic, political, historical, archeological, and philosophical (apologetics) evidence. As the pages of this book unfold, there is an internal consistency with social science and The Bible. However, where such consistency appeared to diverge, this author attempts to fi lter out the noise by applying critical thinking criteria to a Worldview that may not be consistent with the Word view. The goal of this book therefore is to provide some exposition (Greek apologia) of the Word and see how the World fi ts. Born again Christians can be credible scientists and not compromise Gods Word. Making Sense of Your World by W. Gary Phillips,William E. Brown,John Stonestreet Pdf

Making Sense of Your World offers a basic, accessible introduction to biblical worldview that covers all of these aspects of world-view thinking. Part One compares the basic worldviews, Part Two contrasts (and seeks to defend) the biblical worldview with the others, and Part Three constructs a biblical worldview in four key areas. This book is an overview; the Christian thinker is invited to continue his or her study through the recommended readings at the end of each chapter--an ongoing task Paul labels the 'renewing' of our minds (Romans 12:2).

Making Sense of the Hebrew Bible by Robert A. Butterfield Pdf

Understanding the Hebrew Bible has never been easy. Even great scholars have had to be content with understanding only bits and pieces of it. The main reason was the lack of hard evidence about Israel's history. Without such evidence, one could only guess about why and when a text was written, and if one couldn't really explain even one text, how could one explain the whole collection? Thanks to recent archaeology, however, it is now possible to paint a factually reliable history of Israel and make strong connections between texts and actual events. These connections, in turn, permit one to see structure where previously none was visible. This book is an attempt to offer a concise and, I hope, understandable response to questions that students and parishioners have been asking me for years, such as: Does the Hebrew Bible have a structure? What imagery and motifs form that structure? What is the dominant theology of that structure? Are there competing theologies? How do the most important texts relate to Israel's history? Is Israel's real history different from biblical accounts? Does the Hebrew Bible's structure continue into the New Testament, and if it does, so what?

Making Sense of Genesis by J. Wilson Pdf

Early Genesis is like a table of contents for the rest of the book, a seed from which the rest of Scripture and history unfolds: so many ideas, images, and events can be traced back to it. Like the seeds that are so often our staple for life, Genesis also provides food for the soul, true wisdom, and the big picture we need to live in this world. But its message can be hindered by misunderstanding its purpose. Making Sense of Genesis looks at what works and what doesn't work when interpreting Genesis. It's not a commentary, so it doesn't interact with all of Genesis or much that has been written about it. Rather, it observes how the ideas and images in early Genesis unfold and are fulfilled, and how they are just as true and fresh for us now as they were in the beginning.

Making Sense of Old Testament Genocide by Christian Hofreiter Pdf

The divine commands to annihilate the seven nations living in Canaan (to 'devote them to destruction', herem in Biblical Hebrew) are perhaps the most morally troubling texts of the Hebrew and Christian bibles. Making Sense of Old Testament Genocide: Christian Interpretations of Herem Passages addreses the challenges these texts pose. It presents the various ways in which interpreters from the first century to the twenty-first have attempted to make sense of them. The most troubling approach was no doubt to read them as divine sanction and inspiration for violence and war: the analysis of the use of herem texts in the crusades, the inquisition, and various colonial conquests illustrates this violent way of reading the texts, which has such alarming contemporary relevance. Three additional approaches can also be traced to antiquity, viz. pre-critical, non-literal, and divine-command-theory readings. Finally, critics of Christianity from antiquity via the Enlightenment to today have referenced herem texts: their critical voices are included as well. Christian Hofreiter combines a presentation of a wide range of historical sources with careful analysis that scrutinizes the arguments made and locates the texts in their wider contexts. Influential contributions of such well-known figures as Augustine, Origen, Gregory the Great, Thomas Aquinas, and John Calvin are included, as well as those of critics such as Marcion, Celsus and Matthew Tindal, and less widely known texts such as crusading histories, songs and sermons, colonial conquest accounts, and inquisition manuals. The book thus sheds new light on the ways in which these texts have shaped the thoughts and actions of their readers through the centuries, and offers pertinent insights into how readers might be able to make sense of them today.
