Herons: Nature's Voracious Eaters by Dr. Richard A. NeSmith Pdf

Herons are water wading birds with beautiful plumage, as well as great hunters and stalkers. Most migrate and build great nests in rookeries called heronries. This issue focuses on how herons form migration flocks, raise their chicks and hunt their prey. And hunt the prey they do, with an almost ferocious and mesmerizing manner of catching almost anything small enough to swallow. They are nature’s voracious eaters. The seven native herons of North America include the Great Blue Heron, Green Heron, Black-crowned Night-Heron, Yellow-crowned Night-Heron, Tricolored Heron, Little Blue Heron, and the Tiger-Heron (Mexico).

Hummingbirds: Nature's Tiny Dancers by Dr. Richard A. NeSmith Pdf

Hummingbirds are almost a natural wonder of survival. They seem to deny many of the properties we know about life and nature. They are the smallest birds but have the largest heart and brain in body mass-to-size ratio. Their body metabolism is so fast that they would die if not eating at least every four hours. So, their body metabolism has to slow down every night (called torpor), or else die before sunrise. Hummingbirds are acrobatic in flight and the only bird to be able to fly backward. They have tremendous memory and recognize every flower visited and when it will be replenished with nectar. Finally, they recognize the faces of people with whom they have interacted. The migratory ones make the long flights alone, having never traveled the route. They dance and flicker and make us smile because they are genuinely Nature’s Tiny Dancers.

Trout Fishing in the Catskills by Ed Van Put Pdf

Ed Van Put begins this important book with the history of native brook trout and offers little-known details about their sizes, range, and demise from over-fishing, the growth of streamside industries, and the introduction of competitive species. Sweeping in its scope, Trout Fishing in the Catskills tells a thorough tale of the often tumultuous history of fishing in the Catskills. With a scope of over a century, Van Put tells of the Catskill’s frontier fishing beginnings and tracks the rise, fall, and eventual revival of the fisheries. Throughout, this is a history of people and methods as well as rivers, and there are profiles of Theodore Gordon, Art Flick, Harry and Elsie Darbee, Sparse Grey Hackle, and more. No serious trout fisherman, in any part of the country, will want to miss this pioneering portrait of a seminal region in American angling history. Skyhorse Publishing is proud to publish a broad range of books for fishermen. Our books for anglers include titles that focus on fly fishing, bait fishing, fly-casting, spin casting, deep sea fishing, and surf fishing. Our books offer both practical advice on tackle, techniques, knots, and more, as well as lyrical prose on fishing for bass, trout, salmon, crappie, baitfish, catfish, and more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to publishing books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked by other publishers and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

The North Country Trail by United States. Bureau of Outdoor Recreation Pdf

On October 2, 1968, the Congress of the United States enacted the National Trails System Act, Public Law 90-543. The North Country Trail is one of 14 potential trails named in the Act to be studied. It would extend from the Appalachian Trail in Vermont approximately 3,200 miles through the states of New York, Pennsylvania, Ohion, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota to the proposed Lewis and Clark Trail in North Dakota. The Act calls for a determination of its feasibility and desirability for its designation as a National Scenic Trail in the National Trails System and, if it is found to merit inclusion, recommendations are to be developed for its administration and management. The study culminates with this report, which recommends establishment of a North Country Trail as a component of the National Trails System.
