The best field guide to North American mammals The best-selling field guide that "sets new standards" (New Scientist) and "makes all other field guides for mammals of the United States. . . and Canada obsolete" (Journal of Mammalogy) is now even better. Covering 20 species recognized since 2002 and including 13 new color plates, this fully revised edition of Mammals of North America illustrates all 462 known mammal species in the United States and Canada—each in beautiful color and accurate detail. With a more up-to-date species list than any other guide, improved facing-page descriptions, easier-to-read distribution maps, updated common and scientific names, and track and scat illustrations, this slim, light, and easy-to-use volume is the must-have source for identifying North American mammals. Roland Kays and Don Wilson have scoured the technical literature to pull out the key differences between similar species, and illustrated these whenever possible, making the guide useful to amateur naturalists and professional zoologists alike. Casual animal watchers will appreciate the overview of mammal diversity and the tips on identifying animals they can spy in their binoculars, while scientists will appreciate the exacting detail needed to distinguish similar species, including illustrations of shrew teeth, bat toes, and whale dorsal fins. The Mammals of Colorado by Edward Royal Warren Pdf

Excerpt from The Mammals of Colorado: An Account of the Several Species Found Within the Boundaries of the State, Together With a Record of Their Habits and of Their Distribution N apology seems hardly necessary for the issue of this book, for any one who takes any interest in Nature feels the need of a book treating of the local Species of animals or plants, and such a book is entirely wanting for Colorado mammals. Whatever information we have concerning these is scattered through many and various publications, mostly issued by the Government, and which are Often out of print or inaccessible to the average student. A few words of acknowledgment and explanation with regard to the work on this book will not be amiss. Some three years ago, Mr. William Lutley Sclater, then Director of the Museum Of Colorado College, began a book on the mammals of Colorado, but dropped it to take up other work. A little later he turned his manuscript over to me with the urgent solicitation that I take it up and complete it. Between the time when Mr. Sclater began and I took hold, a number of species had been added to the Colorado fauna, and as more specimens were available from which to draw up the descrip tions, it was necessary to rewrite most of the portion which was at that time prepared, aswell as to compose the remainder. But during all the time I was at work on this I had the willing and unfailing advice of Mr. Sclater, and he was also good enough to write the diagnoses of the orders, families, and many of the genera, and also drew up the keys of the families and genera, and he likewise read over and revised the whole manuscript. I cannot express how much I owe to him, but I would hardly have ventured upon the work without his assistance and co-operation. Jurassic West, Second Edition by John Foster Pdf

The famous bone beds of the Morrison Formation, formed one hundred and fifty million years ago and running from Wyoming down through the red rock region of the American Southwest, have yielded one of the most complete pictures of any ancient vertebrate ecosystem in the world. Jurassic West, Second Edition tells the story of the life of this ancient world as scientists have so far been able to reconstruct it. Aimed at the general reader, Jurassic West, Second Edition recounts the discovery of many important Late Jurassic dinosaurs such as Apatosaurus, Allosaurus, and Stegosaurus. But dinosaurs compose barely a third of the more than 90 types of vertebrates known from the formation, which include crocodiles and turtles, frogs and salamanders, dinosaurs and mammals, clams and snails, and ginkgoes, ferns, and conifers. Featuring nearly all new illustrations, the second edition of this classic work includes new taxa named since 2007, updates to the naming and classifications of some old taxa, and expanded sections on numerous aspects of Morrison Formation paleontology and geology.

Handbook of Zoonoses, Second Edition by George W. Beran Pdf

This multivolume handbook presents the most authoritative and comprehensive reference work on major zoonoses of the world. The Handbook of Zoonoses covers most diseases communicable to humans, as well as those diseases common to both animals and humans. It identifies animal diseases that are host specific and reviews the effects of various human diseases on animals. Discussions address diseases that remain important public and animal health problems and the techniques that can control and prevent them. The chapters are written by internationally recognized scientists in their respective areas of disease, who work or have worked extensively in the most affected areas of the world. The emphasis for each zoonosis is on the epidemiology of the disease, the clinical syndromes and carrier states in infected animals and humans, and the most current methods for diagnosis and approaches to control. For infectious agents or biologic toxins, which may be transmitted by foods of animal origin, a strong focus is placed on food safety measures. The etiologic and therapeutic aspects of each disease important to epidemiology and control are identified.

Management of Amphibians, Reptiles, and Small Mammals in North America by Robert C. Szaro Pdf

Historically the management of public lands from a multiple use perspective has led to a system that emphasizes those habitat components or faunal elements that primarily resulted in some sort of definable economic value. While this often benefitted other species that were not even considered in the original prescriptions, it also negatively impacted others. We no longer can afford to take this simplistic view of ecosystem management. We need to use a more holistic approach where ecological landscapes are considered as units, and land management practices incorporate all elements into an integrated policy. This includes examining the impacts of proposed land uses on amphibian, reptile, and small mammal populations.
