Development and Field Application of Density Management Diagrams and Size-density Surface Models Developed for the Boreal Mixedwood Stands of Ontario by David James Smith,Great Lakes Forestry Centre,Northern Forestry Program (Canada) Pdf
Describes the construction and interpretation of the density management diagram (DMD and the size-density surface model, which assist forest managers to better understand mixedwood stand development and provide an aid for the planning of thinning prescriptions in boreal Ontario. The DMD is an age dependent, average stand mortality model that predicts the structural development of fully stocked natural stands. That concept has been expanded in the surface model to enable multispecies stand development and interspecific competition to be followed. The surface model illustrates the relationship between plant size and density for all possible combinations of two dominant tree species. Examples are provided to assist the user in interpreting the models in black spruce-jack pine stands. The utility of the surface is discussed in relation to stand development, and examples are given to illustrate the effect of silvicultural treatments on stand structure.

Alternative Silvicultural Systems for Ontario's Boreal Mixedwoods by Christopher Herbert Richard Wedeles,Great Lakes Forestry Centre,Northern Forestry Program (Canada) Pdf
Summarises the potential use of alternative silvicultural (harvesting) systems on the productivity of boreal mixedwood forests. Begins with an overview of the ecology of boreal mixedwoods, including physical environment, stand dynamics, and landscape ecology; then provides detailed reviews of modified clear-cutting systems (including strip cutting, patch cutting, and seed-tree cutting), shelterwood systems, and selection systems (including group selection and individual tree selection). Also briefly discusses the environmental considerations that are associated with these systems (effects on soil, water resources, wildlife, and aesthetics). Concludes with a discussion of areas of uncertainty in the application of alternative systems and the perceived problems that have limited their use in boreal mixedwoods.

Canada's Vegetation by Geoffrey A.J. Scott Pdf
Canada's Vegetation includes comprehensive sections on tundra, forest-tundra, boreal forest and mixed forest transition, prairie (steppe), Cordilleran environments in western North America, temperate deciduous forests, and wetlands. An overview of each ecosystem is provided, and equivalent vegetation types throughout the world are reviewed and compared with those in Canada. The integration of data on climate, soil, and vegetation in a single volume makes this an invaluable reference tool. Canada's Vegetation is sure to become a standard textbook for those in the environmental sciences.

Bioenergy from Sustainable Forestry by J. Richardson,R. Björheden,P. Hakkila,A.T. Lowe,C.T. Smith Pdf
Bioenergy from Sustainable Forestry synthesizes information needed to design or implement sustainable forest management systems for production of biomass for energy in conjunction with other forest products. It is organized around the criteria for sustainable forest management: productivity, environment, social issues, economics, and legal and institutional framework. More than 25 international experts from 10 countries have brought together available ecological, physical, operational, social and economic information and identified gaps in knowledge related to biomass production and harvesting systems. This is the first time that such comprehensive information has been brought together under one cover, using an integrated, holistic approach. Guiding principles and state of the art knowledge are emphasized. The book will enable forest resource managers and planners to evaluate the ability of specific forest regions to sustainably meet bioenergy production demands.

Protecting White Spruce Understories when Harvesting Aspen by Canada-Alberta Partnership Agreement in Forestry,Alberta. Forest Service,Brace Forest Services,Canada. Forestry Canada Pdf
This project was aimed primarily at technology tranfer, demonstrating the integration of silvicultural and harvesting techniques for protecting spruce understories in mixedwoods. This report provides details of the silvicultural component. It stresses post-harvest implications, particularly blowdown risk and growth and yield potential of released understory, and regeneration and growth of spruce, aspen, and poplar on mechanically harvested mixedwood sites. The project addresses concerns about maintaining the coniferous component of mixedwood forests and finding alternatives to clearcutting. It covers the current status of operational understory protection and some related aspects of integrated resource management.
