Mandelstam's Worlds by Andrew Kahn Pdf

Rightly appreciated as a 'poet's poet', Mandelstam has been habitually read as a repository of learned allusion. Yet as Seamus Heaney observed, his work is 'as firmly rooted in both an historical and cultural context as real as Joyce's Ulysses or Eliot's Waste Land.' Great lyric poets offer a cross-section of their times, and Mandelstam's poems represent the worlds of politics, history, art, and ideas about intimacy and creativity. The interconnections between these domains and Mandelstam's writings are the subject of this book, showing how engaged the poet was with the history, social movements, political ideology, and aesthetics of his time. The importance of the book also lies in showing how literature, no less than history and philosophy, enables readers to confront the huge upheaval in outlook can demand of us; thinking with poetry is to think through the moral compromise and tension felt by individuals in public and private contexts, and to create out of art experience in itself. The book further innovates by integrating a new, comprehensive discussion of the Voronezh Notebooks, one of the supreme achievements of Russian poetry. This book considers the full political dimension of works that explore the role of the poet as a figure positioned within society but outside the state, caught between an ideal of creative independence and a devotion to the original, ameliorative ideals of the revolution.

Memorial Volume For Stanley Mandelstam by Berkovits Nathan Jacob,Brink Lars,Chau Ling-lie Pdf

Stanley Mandelstam (1928–2016) was one of the most influential and respected particle theorists. Coming as a young chemical engineer from South Africa to study theoretical physics in England, he quickly became a leading physicist in his field. With his deep understanding of quantum field theory, he pioneered the development of the analytic S-matrix theory as well as the path-dependent formulations for quantum gauge theories and for quantum general relativity. They are being actively used for the electroweak theory and having their imprints in lattice gauge theory and loop quantum gravity. Also he elucidated the mechanisms for quark confinement in quantum chromodynamics, constructed non-perturbative bosonization methods in 1+1 dimensions, and proved the perturbative finiteness and β=0 of N=4 supersymmetric Yang–Mills theory. His work also led to the discovery of dual resonance models, which in turn became superstring theory. He was a leader in these developments, devoting much of his later years to the proof that the theory is perturbatively finite so it can be considered as a contender for the theory of quantum gravity. He was also a very modest and friendly man, impressing everyone with his sharp intellect as well as his humanity. This volume contains essays written by many of his friends and students, including both detailed reports on his scientific achievements as well as personal reminiscences. Also collected in the volume are some selected reprints of Mandelstam's early seminal papers and abstracts of selected papers representing the full spectrum of his contributions. Contents: Recollections of Stanley Mandelstam (Geoffrey Chew) Scientific Biography of Stanley Mandelstam: 1955–1980 (Charles B Thorn) Scientific Biography of Stanley Mandelstam: 1981–2016 (Nathan Berkovits) Stanley Mandelstam: Brief Biography and Selected Publications with Commentary (Ling-Lie Chau) Stanley Mandelstam: The Early Years at a 'Most Stimulating Theoretical Group' (Sabine Lee) The Guiding Influence of Stanley Mandelstam, from S-Matrix Theory to String Theory (Peter Goddard) Remembering Stanley: From a Source of Inspiration to a Fair Strong Competitor (G Veneziano) Stanley Mandelstam and Me and Life on the Light-cone (Lars Brink) Reminiscences of Stanley Mandelstam (John H Schwarz) Stanley Mandelstam and My Postdoctoral Years at Berkeley (Steven Frautschi) Reminiscences on Stanley Mandelstam (Korkut Bardakci) Remembering a Gentle Giant of Physics (Charles Sommerfield) Grad School with Stanley Mandelstam (Joseph Polchinski) Remembering a Gentle Giant of Physics (Mary K Gaillard) Mandelstam & NAL (Pierre Ramond) The Influence of Stanley Mandelstam (Michael B Green) My Interaction with Stanley Mandelstam (Paolo Di Vecchia) My Advisor Stanley (Sang-Jin Sin) Stanley Mandelstam My Graduate Supervisor (Arjun Berera) Reprints and Abstracts of Selected Publications: The Mandelstam Representations in the Mandelstam Variables for S-Matrices: Determination of the Pion-Nucleon Scattering Amplitude from Dispersion Relations and Unitarity. Shamanic Worlds by Marjorie Mandelstam Balzer Pdf

The ancient heartland of shamanism is no longer forbidden territory - to travelers or to the spirits. But the spirits never left the vastnesses of Siberia and Central Asia, as these writings reveal. Russian and native experts, and an American cultural anthropologist who has done fieldwork in the region, introduce us to shamans as the poets, therapists, healers, and even leaders of their communities. Among the special features of this collection are remarkable transcriptions of shamanic exhortations and a pathbreaking study of shamanic tales and rituals.

Saying Yes at Lightning by Kevin J. O'Brien Pdf

Saying Yes at Lightning explores how four poets - Gerard Manley Hopkins, H. D., Osip Mandelstam, and William Carlos Williams - use imagery to confront that which is most deeply threatening to them. In showing how risky subject matter is matched by stylistic risk, the author sheds light on a previously unexplored, but quite significant, dynamic in post-romantic poetry - the pervasive use of «provisional» or destabilized images.

Encyclopedia of World Problems and Human Potential by Union of International Associations Pdf

The destruction of wildlife habitats ... organized crime ... AIDS ... illiteracy ... acid rain -- these are among the 130,000 topics documented and discussed in the new edition of the Encyclopedia. But its truly unique goal is to present this complex set of issues in ways that facilitate an organized response. To this end, the book also focuses on the complex relationship between problems and society's own ideological relationship with these problems. How do human priorities and perceptions aggravate or enable problems? What are the established and alternative responses? The Encyclopedia contains over 158,000 cross-references between entries, an extensive 91,000 practical key term index, bibliographies, and full cross-referencing to the Yearbook of International Organizations. For anyone concerned with the world community, here are the means to explore and participate in today's most crucial endeavors. Volume 2, Human Potential: Transformation and Values, contains 7,700 entries reflecting a spectrum of problem-solving approaches based on such human development issues as self-learning, creativity, and modes of awareness. The volume also focuses on specific religious beliefs, value systems, and thought patterns.
