Painting with Words, Writing with Pictures by Franco Ricci Pdf
Ricci's book ranges widely over Calvino's oeuvre to illustrate the accuracy of the idea articulated by Calvino himself that a visual image lies at the origin of all his narrative. The book's main theme is the difficult interface between word and image that Calvino struggled with throughout his career, the act of perception that rendered visible that which was invisible and transformed what was seen into what is read. Ricci holds that Calvino's narrative has an 'imagocentric' program and that his literary strategy is 'ekphrastic' i.e. it is characterized by literary description of visual representation, real or imaginary. The book is interdisciplinary in nature and will interest not only scholars of literature but also those who work with the visual arts and with information technology.

Multiple Attribute Decision Making Algorithm via Picture Fuzzy Nano Topological Spaces by Ibtesam Alshammari, Parimala Mani,Cenap Ozel, Harish Garg Pdf
Picture fuzzy nano topological spaces is an extension of intuitionistic fuzzy nano topological spaces. Every decision in life ends with an answer such as yes or no, or true or false, but we have an another component called abstain, which we have not yet considered. This work is a gateway to study such a problem. This paper motivates an enquiry of the third component – abstain - in practical problems. The aim of this paper is to investigate the contemporary notion of picture fuzzy nano topological spaces and explore some of its properties. The stated properties are quantified with numerical data. Furthermore, an algorithm for Multiple Attribute Decision-Making (MADM) with an application regarding the file selection of building material under uncertainty by using picture fuzzy nano topological spaces is developed. As a practical problem, a comparison table is presented to show the difference between the novel concept and the existing methods.
The proposal of a semantics for quotations using explanatory notions drawn from philosophical theories of pictures. In Quotations as Pictures, Josef Stern develops a semantics for quotations using explanatory notions drawn from philosophical theories of pictures. He offers the first sustained analysis of the practice of quotation proper, as opposed to mentioning. Unlike other accounts that treat quotation as mentioning, Quotations as Pictures argues that the two practices have independent histories, that they behave differently semantically, that the inverted commas employed in both mentioning and quotation are homonymous, that so-called mixed quotation is nothing but subsentential quotation, and that the major problem of quotation is to explain its dual reference or meaning—its ordinary meaning and its metalinguistic reference to the quoted phrase attributed to the quoted subject. Stern argues that the key to understanding quotation is the idea that quotations are pictures or have a pictorial character. As a phenomenon where linguistic competence meets a nonlinguistic symbolic ability, the pictorial, quotation is a combination of features drawn from the two different symbol systems of language and pictures, which explains the exceptional and sometimes idiosyncratic data about quotation. In light of this analysis of verbal quotation, in the last chapters Stern analyzes scare quotation as a nonliteral expressive use of the inverted commas and explores the possibility of quotation in pictures themselves.
The Yucatan-From Prehistoric Times to the Great Maya Revolt by Douglas T. Peck Pdf
This book introduces an innovative and verified pattern of Maya history that follows the origin of the Olmec culture in Tabasco through its melding into and becoming the Chontal Maya/Itza of the Yucatan. The Yucatan has been the focal point and geographical crossroad of profound cultural, ethnological, and sociological change and development in Mesoamerica from ancient times to the present. This far-reaching and historically significant acculturation was brought about by two widely separated epic migrations and military conquests by foreign peoples bringing radically new, innovative, and advanced culture to the area. The first of these was the migration and military conquest by the Olmec/Chontal Maya/Itza from Tabasco bringing their written language, mathematics, architectural expertise, and religion into northern and central Yucatan. This golden age of Maya civilization, centered in the Yucatan, lasted for a millennium during which the advanced Maya culture flowered and spread south into Honduras and Guatemala and west into the highlands of Mexico. In like manner, the second migration and military conquest of the Yucatan by Spanish conquistadors also brought new and advanced cultural norms to the area. The history of the origin, development, and impact of these two momentous events constitutes the thrust of this book and is contrary to and challenges much of the currently accepted historiography related to the subject. Contrary to current consensus the book shows that the seafaring and mercantile oriented Chontal Maya/Itza from Yucatan were a populous worldly element of the Maya civilization who traveled and spread their cultural influence not only throughout continental Mesoamerica, but ventured across the seas to the islands of the Caribbean and to the shores of Southwest Florida in the territory of the Calusa Indians. Consistent with this accomplishment, they had developed naval engineering, Metallurgy, tool design, woodworking, and ship building capabilities that enabled them to construct the large composite seaworthy vessels (not just log canoes) required. And from their expertise in mathematics and astronomy they developed a sophisticated method of celestial navigation for their overseas voyages a millennium before celestial navigation was developed in Europe.
