Manual of North American Birds (Classic Reprint) by Robert Ridgway Pdf

Excerpt from Manual of North American Birds For those who are already familiar with the use of analytical keys in works on natural history such instructions would of course be quite super uous; but as some who possess the book may not have had pre vions experience with such keys, the following directions are given for their benefit: In the first place, it may be stated that the principle upon which the keys are constructed is that of dichotomous antithesis. That is, each character tested must conform to one or another phrase, there being only one alternative. Therefore, if the characters mentioned after a1 do not fit the bird in hand, everything following must be ignored until a2 is reached. Having found that the bird belongs to a1 or a2, as the case may be, then the immediately following 6' is to be tested, and so on until the ultimate division is reached and the bird identified. Field Ornithology by Elliott Coues Pdf

Excerpt from Field Ornithology: Comprising a Manual of Instruction Procuring, Preparing and Preserving Birds and a Check List of North American Birds Since ascertained to inhabit North America, while one hundred and fifty have been removed from the former list as being extralimital, invalid or otherwise untenable. Of whatever part the author may have taken in remodelling the list, it would be Obviously indelicate to speak. But he cannot refrain from alluding to the Signal services Of reform rendered by Mr. Allen, Of Cambridge, whose stauch advocacy, under circum stances that might have excused fiinching, did so much to precipitate the changes, long while progressing and inevi table, for which the time was at length at hand. Nor would this allusion be entirely just, did he not in the same connection refer to the thorough revision now making by Prof. Baird him self, with the cooperation Of Dr. Brewer and Mr. Ridgway, the results Of which are about to appear in what promises to be one Of the greatest monuments ever erected to American ornithology. The notable concordance Of the several writings in question, an agreement the more gratifying because a short time since it might have been considered impossible, marks an important period in the history Of the science. The outlook promises well, when different premises lead up to the same conclusions, and conflicting views are reconciled. Our Feathered Game by Dwight W. Huntington Pdf

Excerpt from Our Feathered Game: A Handbook of the North American Game Birds Ome years ago I was shooting ducks in North Dakota with some army officers from Fort Totten. In looking over the bag one evening I found a number of birds which were entirely new to me. Several of them were not mentioned in any of the books on field sports. It occurred to me then that a book describing every game bird would be a valu able addition to a Sportsman's library. The authors of the earlier books had little or no experience west of the Alleghenies and many of the birds now taken by sportsa were unknown to them. When Audubon and Wilson wrote their ornithologies much of the Western country was inhabited by hostile Indians and was inaccessible. Audubon was aware of the existence of the best American grouse, the Sharp tail, but said that he was entirely unfamiliar with its habits. Forester had no acquaintance with the com mon prairie-grouse. All the birds are now known, and described, but the information is contained in many volumes, and is, for the most part, too technical to entertain sportsmen. There is not to-day a complete manual of the feathered game of North America. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Evolution of Colors of North American Land Birds (Classic Reprint) by Charles A. Keeler Pdf

Excerpt from Evolution of Colors of North American Land Birds The present paper has been written more with the hope of stimulating thought and inciting research in a new and as yet almost untrodden field of ornithological inquiry, than with the expectation of reaching definite results. The subject is as yet too new and difficult to be reduced to even the semblance of an exact science, and accordingly all the views here set forth are more or less provisional and tentative. I have constantly pro ceeded upon the assumption that a poor theory is better than no theory, provided it be not considered as final, since it affords an opening wedge for the further study of a subject. Accordingly many of the views here set forth are hardly to be considered as more than guesses, and it is expected that future study will serve to show their fallacy. If they lead to this further study, however, and to more exact and comprehensive work by others, I shall be glad to see them overturned and their places filled by more worthy hypotheses. In the preparation of the work I have received much valuable assistance, which I here take pleasure in ac knowledging. Much of the examination of specimens was done at the United States National Museum, the authorities of which kindly placed their collection of birds at my disposal. To Mr. Robert Ridgway I am ih debted for innumerable personal favors during my stay in Washington. His Manual of North American Birds has formed the systematic basis for this paper. Dr. L. Manual of Taxidermy by C. J. Maynard Pdf

Excerpt from Manual of Taxidermy: A Complete Guide in Collecting and Preserving Birds and Mammals Possibly the political troubles in which our country was involved had something to do with the great ornithological depression which fell upon the pop ular mind. Strange as it may appear, however, for a period of thirty years after the completion of Audubon's great work, not a general popular work of any kind was written on birds in America. Then appeared Samuels' Birds of New England, pub lished in 1867, a work which apparently did much toward turning the popular tide in favor of orni thological study, for from that time we can perceive a general awakening. Not only did the newspa pers and magazines teem with articles on birds, but in the five succeeding years we find three impor tant works on American ornithology announced as about to appear: Baird, Brewer, and Ridgeway's History of American Birds, of which three vol umes have appeared, published in 1874; May nard's Birds of Florida, issued in parts, but af terwards merged into the Birds of Eastern North America, completed in 1882, and Goues' Key.
