The Ruhleben Prison Camp by Israel Cohen Pdf

Excerpt from The Ruhleben Prison Camp: A Record of Nineteen Months' Internment The Ruhleben Camp is. Only one of about a hundred and fifty prisoners of war camps in Germany, but its name is probably the most widely known on this side of the North Sea, owing to its being the camp in which all British civilians of military age in the German Empire are concentrated, and to the frequency with which its affairs have engaged the attention of both Houses of Parliament in this country. I was interned there for nineteen months, from November 6, 1914, unto June 6, 1916. Previous to my internment I was imprisoned for a few days in September, 1914, solely on the ground of my being a British subject, in the Stadtvogtei Gefangnis, Berlin. On the day of my removal to Ruhleben I was again locked up for a few hours in that same jail, which served as a collecting-station, and five months later I was lodged within its walls for the third and longest period. The History of Ruhleben by Joseph Powell Pdf

Excerpt from The History of Ruhleben: A Record of British Organisation in a Prison Camp in Germany That is what Count Schwerin, Commandant of Ruhleben, said, some time in the summer of 1916, to a distinguished American visitor who had called on him with an introduction from the American Embassy. It was the generous tribute Of an enemy whom Ruhleben men had ceased to think of as an enemy before he died. This book is written to set forth, in detail, the facts on which it was based, and to show how a number Of Englishmen, raked in from the German cities, dumped in a swamp, and housed in stables, set to work to found a British colony and build a British city within a few miles Of the enemy's capital, and to place on record the hard work done by many men in many different departments of endeavour. Outwitting the Hun by Pat O'Brien Pdf

Excerpt from Outwitting the Hun: My Escape From a German Prison Camp Of every one who befriended me. I hope particularly that every good Hollander who played the part of the Good Samaritan to me so bountifully after my escape from Belgium will see these pages and feel that I am absolutely sincere when I say that words cannot begin to express my sense of gratitude to the Dutch people. It is needless for me to add how deeply I feel for my fellow-prisoners in Germany who were less fortunate than I. Poor, poor fellows - they are the real victims Of the war. I hope that every one Of them may soon be restored to that freedom whose value I never fully realized until after I had had to fight so hard to regain it.
