Marching Together by Melinda Chateauvert Pdf

The Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters (BSCP) was the first national trade union for African Americans. Standard BSCP histories focus on the men who built the union. Yet the union's Ladies' Auxiliary played an essential role in shaping public debates over black manhood and unionization, setting political agendas for the black community, and crafting effective strategies to win racial and economic justice. Melinda Chateauvert explores the history of the Ladies' Auxiliary and the wives, daughters, and sisters of Pullman porters who made up its membership and used the union to claim respectability and citizenship. As she shows, the Auxiliary actively educated other women and children about the labor movement, staged consumer protests, and organized local and national civil rights campaigns ranging from the 1941 March on Washington to school integration to the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Chateauvert also sheds light on the plight of Pullman maids, who—relegated to the Auxiliary—found their problems as working women neglected in favor of the rhetoric of racial solidarity.

Marching with the Marginalised by Anthoniraj Thumma Pdf

About the Book: Pope Benedict XVI recently stated: “The Church must of course ask if she does enough for social justice... It is a question of conscience which we must always pose ourselves.... What must the Church do? What can she not do? What must she not do?” This book attempts to explore the relevant answers to those pertinent questions applying the Values of the Kingdom of God and Principles of the Social Doctrine of the Church to our context and exploring from the perspective of the Marginalised. This volume belongs to the Series on the People’s Theology brought out by the authour articulating the theological reflections emerging from the life struggles and experiential wisdom of the Marginalised. The authour presents the insights in the book as suggestions and proposals for making our mission more relevant and effective by responding to the signs of the times and places through focusing on human rights and justice. This book invites us to pro-actively join the struggles of the Oppressed for liberation and inter-actively march with the Marginalised for realizing the “Just Peace” of the Divine Reign. About the Author: Anthoniraj Thumma, a Catholic Priest from the Diocese of Nellore, secured Master degrees in Sociology as well as Systematic Theology, and Doctorate in Religious Studies from the University of Madras. Three Years in Mississippi by James Meredith Pdf

On October 1, 1962, James Meredith was the first African American student to enroll at the University of Mississippi. Preceded by violent rioting resulting in two deaths and a lengthy court battle that made it all the way to the Supreme Court, his admission was a pivotal moment in civil rights history. Citing his “divine responsibility” to end white supremacy, Meredith risked everything to attend Ole Miss. In doing so, he paved the way for integration across the country. Originally published in 1966, more than ten years after the Supreme Court ended segregation in public schools in Brown v. Board of Education, Meredith describes his intense struggle to attend an all-white university and break down long-held race barriers in one of the most conservative states in the country. This first-person account offers a glimpse into a crucial point in civil rights history and the determination and courage of a man facing unfathomable odds. Reprinted for the first time, this volume features a new introduction by historian Aram Goudsouzian.

Marching Dykes, Liberated Sluts, and Concerned Mothers by Elizabeth Currans Pdf

From the Women in Black vigils and Dyke marches to the Million Mom March, women have seized a dynamic role in early twenty-first century protest. The varied demonstrations--whether about gender, sexuality, war, or other issues--share significant characteristics as space-claiming performances in and of themselves beyond their place in any broader movement. Elizabeth Currans blends feminist, queer, and critical race theory with performance studies, political theory, and geography to explore the outcomes and cultural relevance of public protest. Drawing on observation, interviews, and archival and published sources, Currans shows why and how women utilize public protest as a method of participating in contemporary political and cultural dialogues. She also examines how groups treat public space as an important resource and explains the tactics different women protesters use to claim, transform, and hold it. The result is a passionate and pertinent argument that women-organized demonstrations can offer scholars a path to study the relationship of gender and public space in today's political culture.

American History Told by Contemporaries by Albert Bushnell Hart Pdf

The ground covered by this volume includes many stirring events. It begins with the Mexican War and the consequent renewal of the slavery contest, and it leads through the exciting AFifties. Then comes the Civil War which is treated in detail; on the causes, conditions, and progress of that titanic struggle, the participants, both civil and military, speak with directness and cogency. The troubled and confused Reconstruction period is illustrated by extracts which bring out the main events and scenes; there is no attempt to restate the wearisome debates, or to bring out the details of party and personal controversy. Our forefathers did interesting things and left entertaining records. The story of our nation=s development is clearer for the suggestions made by these writers. They are prejudiced; they see but a part of what is going on; they leave many gaps; but, after all, they tell the story. The collection was selected and edited in 1900 by Albert Bushnell Hart, Professor of History at Harvard University, and a well-respected and published scholar.

Training For Armageddon by Richard D. Merritt Pdf

Over the past 225 years the oak savannah at the mouth of the Niagara River -- designated as a Military Reserve but regarded by the local citizenry as their common lands-- has witnessed a broad spectrum of military, political and cultural happenings. Perhaps most compelling is the story of Niagara Camp, established in the 1870s on the Reserve as the summer camp for Military District #2. By the eve of the Great War this District that encompassed most of central Ontario from Niagara to Sault St. Marie including Toronto, Hamilton and St. Catharines, was the most populous and patriotic District in all of Canada. Niagara Camp and the training that went on within it endeavoured to prepare over 50,000 young men for the Overseas Canadian Expeditionary Force; however, the Camp's vigorous daily routines, comprehensive instruction and discipline could not ready them for the horrors of the Western Front and ...Armageddon. Many never returned. In 1917 Niagara Camp also became the unique training centre for 22,000 Polish Army volunteers, American and Canadian boys eager to fight for a distant land many had never set foot on. The horrific Spanish Flu Pandemic soon followed with dire consequences for the soldiers and their volunteer caregivers. Niagara was also a training camp for Canada's ill-fated and little-known Siberian Expedition. Remarkable sagas are recounted of some of the Camp's veterans. On the centennial of the Great War this in-depth recognition of the brave young volunteers during their preparation for war is long overdue.
