First Australians by Rachel Perkins,Marcia Langton Pdf

First Australians is the dramatic story of the collision of two worlds that created contemporary Australia. Told from the perspective of Australia's first people, it vividly brings to life the events that unfolded when the oldest living culture in the world was overrun by the world's greatest empire. Seven of Australia's leading historians reveal the true stories of individuals—both black and white—caught in an epic drama of friendship, revenge, loss and victory in Australia's most transformative period of history. Their story begins in 1788 in Warrane, now known as Sydney, with the friendship between an Englishman, Governor Phillip, and the kidnapped warrior Bennelong. It ends in 1992 with Koiki Mabo's legal challenge to the foundation of Australia. By illuminating a handful of extraordinary lives spanning two centuries, First Australians reveals, through their eyes, the events that shaped a new nation. Note: This is the unillustrated version ofFirst Australians.

A Hostile Beauty by Alistair Dermer,Danielle Wood Pdf

There are few places today that are truly wild. Macquarie Island is still one such place-a small, wind-blasted rocky outcrop between Tasmania and Antarctica. In exquisite pictures and words, A Hostile Beauty tells the story of this extraordinary Australian outpost teeming with life. Alistair Dermer's stunning photography gives us an up-close look at the lives of the inhabitants: gentle gentoo penguins, engorged elephant-seal bulls and scavenging skuas, and takes us deep into a landscape that is as beautiful and life-giving as it is hostile and pitiless. Let these superb images, from the fury of the squalling Southern Ocean to the warm, trusting eyes of a seal pup, transport you to one of the most remote and spectacular places on Earth.

Naturalist on the Bibbulmun by Leigh W. Simmons Pdf

The Bibbulman Track is a World class walking trail that runs just over 1000km through the forests and across the coastal heaths of southwestern Western Australia, from the towns of Kalamundain the North to Albany in the South. Naturalist on the Bibbulman is the story of one man's journey with his son through this ancient and extraordinary corner of the world. The biodiversity is so extensive that it is im-possible to provide a comprehensive field guide to the Bibbulmun Track. Nevertheless, the author mus-ters his expertise in ecology and evolutionary biology to document the animals and plants found during the Noongar seasons of kambarang and birak, from November to January, with colour photographs throughout. In so doing we learn how evolution has shaped the extraordinary diversity of animals and plants in this corner of the World, the important roles biodiversity plays in providing the stable ecosystem in which we live and prosper, and the serious impacts to that stability imposed by our increasing overexploitation of what is an ancient and fragile landscape. Naturalist on the Bibbulmun is both a witness statement of the current state of the natural regions of southwestern WA, and a call to arms to protect for our future generations what little remains of one of the world's most extraordinary natural habitats.

Drive Around the World by Danny Rosner Blay,Sandra Khazam Pdf

'We've driven around Australia, how about we drive around the world?' And with this one fanciful remark, the seeds were sown for what would become a worldwide adventure for one Melbourne family. Fuelled by itchy feet and a profound desire to expand their family's horizons, after five years of meticulous planning and seemingly endless vaccinations, Danny and Sandra packed their two kids, Maddy and Raffy, into their 4WD and headed off on their 'Big Trip'. Over the next 360 days and more than 36,000kms, this ordinary family undertook a truly extraordinary expedition, circumnavigating the globe and taking in experiences, both profound and everyday, which would prove to be life-changing. Based on the blog that the family kept while on the road, Drive Around the World is a touching, at times hilarious and genuinely unique account of their journey. Filled with tales of the unexpected, close calls and boundless adventure, it's a book that the whole family can enjoy and be inspired by.

Made to Matter by Fiona Probyn-Rapsey Pdf

Most members of the Stolen Generations had white fathers or grandfathers. Who were these white men? This book analyses the stories of white fathers, men who were positioned as key players in the plans to assimilate Aboriginal people by 'breeding out the colour'. The plan to 'breed out the colour' ascribed enormous power to white sperm and white paternity; to 'elevate', 'uplift' and disperse Aboriginality in whiteness, to blank out, to aid cultural forgetting. The policy was a cruel failure, not least because it conflated skin colour with culture and assumed that Aboriginal women and their children would acquiesce to produce 'future whites'. It also assumed that white men would comply as ready appendages, administering 'whiteness' through marriage or white sperm. This book attempts to put textual flesh on the bodies of these white fathers, and in doing so, builds on and complicates the view of white fathers in this history, and the histories of whiteness to which they are biopolitically related.
