From T-2 to Supertanker by Andrew G. Spyrou Pdf

From T-2 to Supertanker provides a unique insight into the oil tanker industrys efforts to produce safe and efficient vessels. Dr. Andrew G. Spyrou believes that marine transportation is the key to effective global shipping, part of which is carrying petroleum by tanker. Enormous changes have taken place in tanker design and construction since World War II. Closure of the Suez Canal on two occasions-1956 and 1967-provided the impetus to enlarge the tanker and to improve tanker performance and safety. The industrys efforts to design and construct todays modern tankers, driven by scale, safety and ecological concerns, have led to ever-larger models. Todays Very Large and Ultra Large crude oil carriers represent the most complex mobile steel structures ever developed. Spyrou discusses how this industry is striving to minimize vital ecological concerns such as oil pollution of the seas, atmospheric pollution by engine exhaust, and contamination of the marine ecosystem. Advances, however, have not been without crises, challenges, and successes.

Marine Science & Technology in China: A Roadmap to 2050 by Jianhai Xiang Pdf

As one of the eighteen field-specific reports comprising the comprehensive scope of the strategic general report of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, this sub-report addresses long-range planning for developing science and technology in the field of marine science. They each craft a roadmap for their sphere of development to 2050. In their entirety, the general and sub-group reports analyze the evolution and laws governing the development of science and technology, describe the decisive impact of science and technology on the modernization process, predict that the world is on the eve of an impending S&T revolution, and call for China to be fully prepared for this new round of S&T advancement. Based on the detailed study of the demands on S&T innovation in China's modernization, the reports draw a framework for eight basic and strategic systems of socio-economic development with the support of science and technology, work out China's S&T roadmaps for the relevant eight basic and strategic systems in line with China's reality, further detail S&T initiatives of strategic importance to China's modernization, and provide S&T decision-makers with comprehensive consultations for the development of S&T innovation consistent with China's reality. Supported by illustrations and tables of data, the reports provide researchers, government officials and entrepreneurs with guidance concerning research directions, the planning process, and investment. Founded in 1949, the Chinese Academy of Sciences is the nation's highest academic institution in natural sciences. Its major responsibilities are to conduct research in basic and technological sciences, to undertake nationwide integrated surveys on natural resources and ecological environment, to provide the country with scientific data and consultations for government's decision-making, to undertake government-assigned projects with regard to key S&T problems in the process of socio-economic development, to initiate personnel training, and to promote China's high-tech enterprises through its active engagement in these areas.

Now in its eighth year, the NILOS Documentary Yearbook provides the reader with an excellent collection of documents related to ocean affairs & the law of the sea, issued each year by organizations, organs & bodies of the United Nations system. Documents of the UN General Assembly, ECOSOC & its regional Commissions, the UN Secretary-General's Informal Consultations, PrepCom ISA/ITLOS, UNCED, UNEP & UNCTAD are included first, followed by the documents of specialized agencies & other autonomous organizations of the UN system, including FAO, IAEA, ILO, IMO, UNESCO/IOC & WMO. As in the previous volumes, documents which were issued in the course of 1992 are reproduced, while other relevant documents are listed. In view of the explosive proliferation of developments as a result of the UNCED, Volume 8 contains a Special Report by co-editor Barbara Kwiatkowska on the Ocean-Related Impact of Agenda 21 on International Organizations of the UN System in Follow-Up to the Rio Summit . For the reader's convenience, a Chronological Table of Selected Ocean-Related Post-Rio UN Meetings & Conferences up to the year 2000 is annexed to this Special Report. An extensive Index of Keywords facilitates access by the reader to the complex matters dealt with by organizations covered by the Yearbook , as well as to the information concerning individual states, regions & international instruments. Integrated Technologies for Environmental Monitoring and Information Production by Nilgun B. Harmancioglu,S.D. Ozkul,O. Fistikoglu,Paul Geerders Pdf

This book presents the proceedings and the outcomes of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) on Integrated Technologies for Environmental Monitoring and Information Production, which was held in Marmaris, Turkey, between September 10- 14, 200 I. With the contribution of 45 experts from 20 different countries, the ARW has provided the opportunity to resolve the basic conflicts that tend to arise between different disciplines associated with environmental data management and to promote understanding between experts on an international and multidisciplinary basis. The prevailing universal problem in environmental data management (EDM) systems is the significant incoherence between data collection procedures and the retrieval of information required by the users. This indicates the presence of problems still encountered in the realization of; (1) delineation of objectives, constraints, institutional aspects of EDM; (2) design of data collection networks; (3) statistical sampling; (4) physical sampling and presentation of data; (5) data processing and environmental databases; (6) reliability of data; (7) data analysis and transfer of data into information; and (8) data accessibility and data exchange at local, regional and global scales. Further problems stem from the lack of coherence between different disciplines involved in EDM, lack of coordination between responsible agencies on a country basis, and lack of coordination on an international level regarding the basic problems and relevant solutions that should be sought.

Intra-Americas Sea Marine Science Meeting of U.S. Experts by Bradford E. Brown,William E. Erb,George A. Maul Pdf

"The December 1990 meeting of more than sixty U.S. experts in marine science of the Intra-Americas Sea made 21 recommendations, with deadlines and agencies responsible to carry them out. These recommendations were a consensus of two days of institutional reports, individual conversations, and workshops. The one overwhelming recommendations was to support the UNEP and IOC in the region through active U.S. scientists' participation in problem identification, project planning and execution, and information transfer. A regional emphasis on marine science issues with clearly defined impacts on U.S. interests was considered essential to generating the financial support neccesary to successful project implementation"--Executive summary, paragraph 1

Can S & T help the world's communities secure adequate nutrition, health care, water, sanitary facilities, and access to education and information? The role of science and technology in development is certainly one of the most complex and delicate issues facing policymakers and development practitioners today. In An Assault on Poverty, the Panel on Technology for Basic Needs of the United Nations Commission on Science and Technology for Development offers analyses of poverty eradication and the role of S & T.
