The Gulf States, Asia and the Indian Ocean by Tim Niblock,Talmiz Ahmad,Degang Sun Pdf

Among the many strategic and economic issues facing the Gulf in the coming years, those relating to the Indian Ocean are set to be among the most challenging. In the re-ordering of global economic and political power which is currently underway, the Indian Ocean constitutes a key arena for regional and global competition and rivalry. With the leading Asian powers playing a more pro-active role in the region, sometimes with conflicting ambitions, and the United States intent on maintaining its established maritime hegemony there, the potential dangers for the Gulf states are considerable. Gulf economic interests and perhaps regime stability would be severely affected by conflict. This book contends that the Gulf states need to play an active part in the promotion of Indian Ocean stability and security, working with other Indian Ocean states to develop institutional structures and practices which encourage cooperation and provide avenues for conflict resolution. They have everything to gain from such a strategy. This volume is based on a workshop held at the Gulf Research Meeting organized by the Gulf Research Center Cambridge in summer 2017.

Gulf Security by The Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research Pdf

This book brings together the papers presented at ‘Gulf Security: Identifying and Confronting the Challenges,’ a symposium held at the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research (ECSSR) on February 24, 2020. Highlighting the various challenges faced by GCC countries, amid the region’s strategic and geopolitical significance, the book examines the Gulf’s influence over global trade routes and its role in maintaining international energy security. The book underscores the vital importance of international cooperation and sound Arab leadership in the face of a growing number of challenges and threats, particularly against the backdrop of external interference in regional issues. Several regional issues of global significance are explored, including the Iranian crisis and the resultant risks to maritime security amid repeated threats to close the Strait of Hurmuz. In responding to these issues, the book emphasizes the importance of pursuing political action to avoid military conflict in the region, which would result in catastrophic damage to the regional and wider global economy and global security. The book also addresses the transition from oil and gas to renewable energy, focusing on the implications for the GCC. Finally, the balance of international and intra-regional alliances in the Middle East is covered, examining the role of Russia, the US and China in response to the challenges that undermine the security and stability of the Arabian Gulf region.

Formulating an Arab Approach to Maritime Security by Ahmed Salem Saleh Al-Wahishi Pdf

The waterways and ports such as Bab el-Mandab and the port of Aden are areas of continuing economic, strategic and grand strategic interest to the international community; they are all of parallel geostrategic importance. Therefore, there are compelling reasons for concrete actions to step up security in the strategic waterways and ports at a time when terrorists are looking for soft targets. The fact is that the security of the Red Sea, Bab el-Mandab Straits, Gulf of Aden, and Arabian Sea, are among the world’s busiest waterways. Yemen’s cooperation with the international community is part of an ambitious effort to improve security worldwide and this cooperation will develop further. Given the strong and multilateral interest of the international community in the Red Sea, Bab el-Mandeb Straits, the Gulf of Aden and Arabian Sea, the littoral states must do their best to provide sufficient security against piracy in order to achieve stability in the region and worldwide. The international community and regional countries should agree on means that can be taken by each respective state individually and collectively. Maritime safety is considered an essential element of economic security for Arab countries and the rest of the world, and therefore the Arab world should support and back international and regional joint efforts. Such regional endeavors to protect maritime shipping lanes from any threat including piracy, in addition to capacity building of maritime security workers, all represent the core of bilateral and multilateral partnership among concerned maritime organizations and Arab states. Because of this it is important for Arab states to expand their diplomatic relations regionally and internationally on the basis of enhancing their security capabilities, including access to necessary training, joint naval maneuvers, and keep up with international maritime developments.

NATO and the Gulf Countries by Ashraf Mohammed Keshk Pdf

This book analyses the fifteen-year-long strategic partnership between NATO and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). The book goes on to address several key questions raised in the year since the inception of the Istanbul Cooperation Initiative (ICI): Is the initiative a framework for consultation on Gulf and regional security issues? Is it a security initiative or a defensive one? Even more importantly, how was this initiative developed? Was there a mutual eagerness, on the part of NATO or that of the four Gulf States, to develop it? Is it possible for the initiative to be redeveloped and have other dimensions and outlooks in the future? Throughout the book, the author provides a comprehensive understanding and assessment of NATO's policies and their impact on the security of the Arab Gulf region.

Security in the Persian Gulf by G. Sick,L. Potter Pdf

This book is a follow-up volume to the acclaimed The Persian Gulf at the Millennium: Essays in Politics, Economy, Security and Religion , published by St. Martin's Press in 1997. The same editors, who direct the Gulf/2000 Project at Columbia University, have assembled a number of leading experts on the Persian Gulf to reflect on factors affecting security there in the twenty-first century. Most contributors are from the region itself and for the first time share the results of ongoing research with an outside audience. The chapters profile the diverse society in the Gulf and the historical pattern of Gulf security, before focusing on current security concerns between Iran and the Arab states. They explore the mutual perceptions of the peoples of the Gulf today and the role of the new generation in shaping its future.

The Arab Gulf States and the West by Dania Koleilat Khatib,Marwa Maziad Pdf

This book examines the changing image of the Arab Gulf States in the West. It addresses the question of perception in international relations and how the Arab States of the Gulf have pursued various endeavors to project themselves into Western imagination. The book chapters generate ideas on how perceptions came about and ways to improve cultural and political realities on the ground in the Arab Gulf States. Thus, it paves the way for a new area of research in the field of Gulf Studies that extends beyond traditional international relations frameworks by weaving elements of intercultural communication into the mix. Recognizing, yet extending beyond, a traditionally realist framework, which has dominated the analysis of Arab Gulf States' foreign relations with western countries, this book tackles both the materialist and the symbolic in the efforts and initiatives launched by the Arab Gulf States. Some chapters maintain a social-scientific approach about the politics of the Arab Gulf States in the West from an international relations lens. Others employ theoretical frameworks that were founded on the notion of the "encounter," with anthropological lenses and concepts of intercultural communication. In addition to the value of this academic research agenda, as such, some of the chapters also touch upon the added importance of policy-oriented input. As the Arab Gulf States actively engage with the West, the book would widely appeal to students and researchers of Gulf politics and international relations.

Maritime Security by Dele Joseph Ezeoba Pdf

The Gulf of Guinea maritime environment accounts for between 70-90 percent of the revenue of the states in the region. In addition to its rich forestry, fisheries reserves, and massive mineral and hydrocarbon deposits, it also houses the largest volumes of the region's oil and gas, which are still its most valued natural resources. Thus, its economic importance has been of great regional and global interest at all times. Invariably, the economic prosperity, or otherwise, of the states in the region is intrinsically tied to the peace and security of the Gulf. This primary and strategic position of the Gulf in the socio-economic survival and development of the states in the region critically underscores the huge importance of its general security, which in recent years and decades has been blighted by many security challenges. Dele Ezeoba's Maritime Security: Imperatives for Economic Development in the Gulf of Guinea extensively engages the dynamics and dialectics of security and economic development in the chosen maritime area, and establishes theoretical and practical mechanisms that should be deployed in combating security threats in the maritime space, and opening up the region to greater development. It offers enterprising vistas of intellectual designs in addressing critical issues of maritime security and economic prosperity.

Regional and International Powers in the Gulf Security by Alaa Al-Din Arafat Pdf

This book discusses the threats and challenges facing the Persian Gulf and the future security in the region, providing an overview of the major regional and extra-regional actors in Gulf security. It argues that except for Iran, no regional or extra-regional actors, including the United States, China, India and Russia, have developed a strategy for Persian Gulf security, and only Turkey has expressed a willingness to provide security for the region. Importantly, the major threats to Persian Gulf security are nonconventional, rather than external, threats to Iranian hegemony or the balance of power. In conclusion, it predicts that the power struggle in the Persian Gulf in the coming decades will be between Iran and Turkey, and not between Iran and Saudi Arabia. This book is of interest to diplomats, journalists, international affairs specialists, strategists and scholars of Gulf politics and security and defence studies.

Maritime Security Complexes of the Indo-Pacific Region by Dr Vijay Sakhuja,Prof (Dr) W Lawrence S Prabhakar Pdf

This book seeks to provide a net assessment of regional challenges and opportunities in this study of the Indo-Pacific region’s security dynamics viewed through the ‘maritime variant’ of the Regional Security Complex Theory. The objective of this volume is to ascertain the regional security dynamics and assess securitization as a driving force. It infers the scope of traditional, non-traditional, and transnational security issues and their regional impact, with a specific focus on the maritime perspectives of regional security dynamics, and also envisages the potential interplay of these factors as they continue to influence and shape future discourse.
