"By describing my twelve years of suffering at the school, year by year and grade by grade I realized that the strengths that held me together and gave me the courage to survive and finish school were the teachings of my parents and grandmother. The First Women Lawyers by Mary Jane Mossman Pdf

This comparative study explores the lives of some of the women who first initiated challenges to male exclusivity in the legal professions in the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. Their challenges took place at a time of considerable optimism about progressive societal change, including new and expanding opportunities for women, as well as a variety of proposals for reforming law, legal education, and standards of legal professionalism. By situating women's claims for admission to the bar within this reformist context in different jurisdictions, the study examines the intersection of historical ideas about gender and about legal professionalism at the turn of the twentieth century. In exploring these systemic issues, the study also provides detailed examinations of the lives of some of the first women lawyers in six jurisdictions: the United States, Canada, Britain, New Zealand and Australia, India, and western Europe. In exploring how individual women adopted different legal arguments in litigated cases, or devised particular strategies to overcome barriers to professional work, the study assesses how shifting and contested ideas about gender and about legal professionalism shaped women's opportunities and choices, as well as both support for and opposition to their claims. As a comparative study of the first women lawyers in several different jurisdictions, the book reveals how a number of quite different women engaged with ideas of gender and legal professionalism at the turn of the twentieth century.

The Birth of a Texas Ghost Town by Mary Jane Gentry Pdf

In its heyday, Thurber was home to coal miners and brick plant workers from Italy, Poland, and as many as fourteen other European nations, not to mention the many Mexican immigrants who came to the area. In this, her master’s thesis, Mary Jane Gentry, who started the first grade in Thurber and graduated as valedictorian of its high school in 1930, records first-hand memories of the town’s vibrant charm. Now edited and with an introduction by T. Lindsay Baker, Gentry’s lively history of the rise and decline of a Texas coal town provides a unique window into a bygone era. Her narrative of rancorous labor disputes, corporate machinations, and the eventual shuttering of the plants and virtual disappearance of the once-thriving town will allow Thurber to live again, if only in the minds of her readers.

Mary Jane by Jessica Anya Blau Pdf

"The best book of the summer." -- InStyle "I LOVED this novel....If you have ever sung along to a hit on the radio, in any decade, then you will devour Mary Jane at 45 rpm." —Nick Hornby Almost Famous meets Daisy Jones & The Six in this "delightful" (New York Times Book Review) novel about a fourteen-year-old girl’s coming of age in 1970s Baltimore, caught between her straight-laced family and the progressive family she nannies for—who happen to be secretly hiding a famous rock star and his movie star wife for the summer. In 1970s Baltimore, fourteen-year-old Mary Jane loves cooking with her mother, singing in her church choir, and enjoying her family’s subscription to the Broadway Showtunes of the Month record club. Shy, quiet, and bookish, she’s glad when she lands a summer job as a nanny for the daughter of a local doctor. A respectable job, Mary Jane’s mother says. In a respectable house. The house may look respectable on the outside, but inside it’s a literal and figurative mess: clutter on every surface, Impeachment: Now More Than Ever bumper stickers on the doors, cereal and takeout for dinner. And even more troublesome (were Mary Jane’s mother to know, which she does not): the doctor is a psychiatrist who has cleared his summer for one important job—helping a famous rock star dry out. A week after Mary Jane starts, the rock star and his movie star wife move in. Over the course of the summer, Mary Jane introduces her new household to crisply ironed clothes and a family dinner schedule, and has a front-row seat to a liberal world of sex, drugs, and rock and roll (not to mention group therapy). Caught between the lifestyle she’s always known and the future she’s only just realized is possible, Mary Jane will arrive at September with a new idea about what she wants out of life, and what kind of person she’s going to be.

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1918 edition. Excerpt: ... PLANS FOR THE SOUTHLAND WITH fun and frolic and rides on the new sled and knitting by the fire and visits to little friends and quiet hours of play with her dolls, Mary Jane's vacation soon passed and the time came to go to school again. Much as Mary Jane loved her home, she loved her school too and she liked to think she was big enough to go out and learn things just as Alice did. So it was a happy little girl who, on the morning school began, got up early and started off for kindergarten. When she came home at noon she reported that the next day was "visiting" day and that each pupil was allowed to bring a guest. "A really truly guest?" asked Mrs. Merrill in surprise. "Are you sure you didn't misunderstand, Mary Jane?" "I didn't miss anything," said Mary Jane positively, " 'cause I listened to every teeny thing she said and then when she was all through I asked her could I bring Junior and she said yes I could if you were willing and you are, aren't you?" "Certainly," replied Mrs. Merrill, "and if you asked her as carefully as that, it must be all right. As soon as you have had your lunch, you may go over and invite him." "And may I stay and play with him?" asked Mary Jane. "Surely," agreed Mrs. Merrill and to tell the truth, she was much pleased that Mary Jane wanted to play with him. Since the little girl had started to school there had been less time for play and the two children had seen very little of each other all the fall. As soon as lunch was over Mrs. Merrill went to the curbstone with Mary Jane, for she still was not allowed to cross that particular roadway by herself, and watched her across the street. "Stay an hour, if you like," said Mrs. Merrill, "and then, if Junior's mother is too busy to bring you home you may phone...

Families and the Law by Mary Jane Mossman,Natasha Bakht,Vanessa Gruben,Karen Pearlston Pdf

"The third edition of Families and the Law continues to focus on "families" and "law": exploring how families experience law in relation to family formation, interventions in intact families, and family dissolution. The authors have tried to continue to focus on issues of diversity among families and to explore critical and interdisciplinary literature about families and family law. This third edition deals with many new challenges for families, as well as new legal developments relating to family relationships. In this context, the book tries to explore how 'families' and 'law' have changed since the previous edition in 2015, and to identify the most important emerging and issues for families and law. In doing so, the book remains committed to exploring how law stays significant for families, and how families and family lives intersect with legal regulation. Or not."--

Ping Meets Pang by Mary Jane Begin Pdf

Ping and Pang are both Pandas, but they don't look a thing like one another and that's a problem. Each maintains they possess the true qualities of being a Panda; the correct color, the size and shape of their ears, the even fluffiness of their tails. It is only when they realize what they have in common do they slowly appreciate each other's differences. The analogy to today's political and racial climate points to acceptance of the other side's differences and finding common ground. PING MEETS PANG is an educational tool. It is an allegory about inclusiveness and acceptance of "the other" told through two pandas. The story is meant to spark discussions about multiculturalism and body positivity, and inspire the protection and conservation of pandas. Includes conversation starters for further instruction and participation! Author/illustrator Mary Jane Begin says of PING MEETS PANG: "While on a recent trip to China I had the chance to visit the world-famous Chengdu Panda Research Base. My hope was to have a glimpse these roly-poly creatures in person. While on tour through the sanctuary, I spotted a section with Red pandas. I thought these don't look like pandas, they look more like red raccoons! I immediately imagined that the Red Panda would have a bit of a chip on its shoulder because everyone thinks a panda looks like a Giant Panda. When I came back to the States, I started sketching. Slowly the story transformed to be about two pandas who don't believe the other is actually a panda because they look and act so differently from each other." Mary Jane is an award-winning illustrator and author of numerous children's books, and professor in the Illustration Department at Rhode Island School of Design. She's also the Chair of Illustration in the M.F.A for Children's Literature at Hollins University. Her previous books include A MOUSE TOLD HIS MOTHER (Little Brown 25,000 HC, 131,00 PB), LITTLE MOUSE'S PAINTING (Morrow/Sea Star 120,100 HC, 21,000 PB). Mary Jane recently won the prestigious Big Xin Children's Literature Award in China for her book, Willow Buds; the Tale of Toad and Badger. She has received awards from the Society of Illustrators, Awards of Excellence from Communications Arts, and the Critici Erba Prize at the Bologna Book Fair as well as the Erma Simonton Black Award from the Bank Street College.
