Forest ecosystem services and the pillars of Bhutan’s Gross National Happiness by Sears, R.,Phuntsho, S.,Dorji, T.,Choden, K.,Norbu, N.,Baral, H. Pdf

In the eastern Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan, culture, society, economy and environment are linked in the development framework of Gross National Happiness (GNH). In this literature review, we highlight the relationships between forests and Bhutan’s development framework and current priorities, identifying plausible causal pathways. Due to the mountainous nature of this country, our particular interest is in the impacts of upstream forest activity on downstream stakeholders. Our hypothetical framework identifies specific causal pathways between forests and the four pillars of GNH (environmental conservation, cultural preservation, equitable socioeconomic development and good governance), and evidence was sought in the published literature to test the hypothesis. While conceptual support for many linkages between forests and each of the pillars was found in the literature, evidential support specifically for Bhutan is limited. The strongest evidence is found for the role of forests in socioeconomic development and good governance, particularly through the community forestry program. To develop incentive programs for forest conservation and restoration, such as payment for ecosystem services and pay-for-performance donor funding, the evidence base needs to be expanded for causal pathways between upstream forest condition and downstream security, particularly for services such as water regulation. The evidence should inform public policy and forest management strategies and practices.

Bhutan: The Unremembered Nation by Karma Ura Pdf

The process of modernization has brought discontinuities in collective memory. This volume and its sequel provide an act of collective remembrance, knitting together many voices and stories. It shows the readers a world of the past before modernization began in the 1960s. Volume 1 unfolds accounts of births and rebirths in the household, making of houses and matrimony, rearing of children and livestock in a village, and husbandry of lands and forests. After sketching these fundamental aspects of existence, it details seasonable migration, backpack and caravan trade, and travel over different climatic and linguistic areas. Colours, sounds, and other sensory experiences of ordinary people are described before ending with the rhythm of the farming of major crops such as millet, rice, and wheat.

Bionomics in the Dragon Kingdom by Ugyen Tshewang,Jane Gray Morrison,Michael Charles Tobias Pdf

This compact and elegant work (equally fitting for both academic as well as the trade audiences) provides a readily accessible and highly readable overview of Bhutan’s unique opportunities and challenges; all her prominent environmental legislation, regulatory statutes, ecological customs and practices, both in historic and contemporary terms. At the same time, Bionomics places the ecological context, including a section on animal rights in Bhutan, within the nation’s Buddhist spiritual and ethical setting. Historic contextualization accents the book’s rich accounting of every national park and scientific reserve, as well as providing up-to-the-minute climate-change related hurdles for the country. Merging the interdisciplinary sciences, engineering and humanities data in a compelling up-to-date portrait of the country, the authors have presented this dramatic compendium against the backdrop of an urgent, global ecological time-frame. It thus becomes clear that the articulated stakes for Bhutan, like her neighboring Himalayan and Indian sub-continental countries (China, India, Bangladesh and Myanmar) are immense, as the Anthropocene epoch unfolds, affecting every living being across the planet. Because Bhutan’s two most rewarding revenue streams derive from the sale of hydro-electric power and from tourism, the complexities of modern pressures facing a nation that prides herself on maintaining traditional customs in what has been a uniquely isolated nation are acute.

Protection of the Environment and the Role of the United Nations by Rajendra Ramlogan Pdf

This book provides a comprehensive review of the roles played by the various programmes, autonomous organisations, specialised agencies and departments of the United Nations in assisting the developing world in attaining environmental objectives. It would be seen that almost all the various components of the United Nations have embraced environmental protection as part of their portfolios. This indicates the growing investment by the United Nations in the environment, particularly in developing countries. The evidence would suggest that the absence of coordination and rationalisation of activities may undermine the ability of the United Nations to deliver effective and efficient environmental assistance to developing countries. Ultimately, this book proposes a drastic restructuring of the United Nations insofar as environmental matters are concerned, hoping that scarce international funds will be well utilised and provide better money for value in environmental investment in developing countries.
