Neurosurgery and Global Health by Isabelle M. Germano Pdf

This book is a combination of ideas and experiences from over 100 dedicated and brilliant neurosurgeons around the world. Their common goal is to provide data for a deeper understanding of the multi-faceted aspects of neurosurgery and, by doing so, to better serve patients across the globe. Scientific curiosity, deep dedication, incredible work ethics, entrepreneurship, and creativity are the common traits among all neurosurgeons, and not the exception. By allowing readers to see the field of neurosurgery from the perspectives of surgeons spanning five continents, this book serves to provide multiple, diverse viewpoints and to build a foundation for future collaborations. The book’s 24 chapters are organized into 3 parts. Part I provides the reader with an overview of the role of neurosurgery in worldwide health care, its evolution over the past decades, the current state and future directions of each neurosurgical subspecialty across the five continents. Over the years, the overarching goal for neurosurgeons has been to develop new, more effective and high-end solutions for complex diseases and to provide access to neurosurgical services for all patients. Part II discusses the differences and similarities of neurosurgery education and training across the globe, providing a snapshot of how new tools, technology, and paradigms reduce inequality and increase access to neurosurgical education. Educational accomplishments and challenges still present for the in different regions of the world are reviewed. Part III focuses on economic aspects influencing neurosurgery globally, including how to make efficient decisions in the face of scarcity, yet demand. The authors provide theories, models, and tools helpful to apply when planning to allocate resources, not just financial, but also human and intellectual. A deeper understanding of economics does not necessarily provide the answer to the problem; rather it provides the tools to find an answer, or, ideally, multiple possible solutions. Neurosurgery and Global Health is the first comprehensive guide to the role of neurosurgery in the global health care sphere, providing an in-depth compendium about the understanding of the neurosurgical role within global health, its efforts in the education of tomorrow’s workforce, and the economic aspects driving the field.

Each edition of Current Techniques in Neurosurgery represents a unique combination of authoritative reviews of the most exciting topics in contemporary neurosurgery, richly illustrated in color with up-to-date and annotated bibliographies of the leading articles in the field. In addition to the usual emphasis on topics such as cerebrovascular disease, neuro-oncology, spinal disorders, and trauma, the text covers emerging technologies impacting OR reorganization, and computer workstations, leading ultimately to the practice of neurosurgery at a molecular level. From the Preface of the 2/e: "Ultimately, of course, at the intersection of molecular biology, computer technology, and anatomic dissection, the surgeon and patient meet in the operating theater; it is my hope that the practical insights and excitement of that intersection are brought home to you."

Advanced Intraoperative Technologies in Neurosurgery by V.A. Fasano Pdf

Since the introduction of electrosurgery the techniques of surgery on the nervous system have passed through further improvements (bipolar coagulation, microscope), even if the procedure was not substantially modified. Today, laser represents a new "discipline", as it offers a new way of performing all basic maneuvers (dissection, demolition, hemostasis, vessel sutures). Furthermore, laser offers the possibility of a special maneuver, namely reduction of the volume of a tumoral mass through vaporization. Its application is not restricted to traditional neurosurgery but extends also to stereotactic and vascular neurosurgery. Laser surgery has also influenced the anesthesiologic techniques. At the same time new instrumentation has been introduced: CUSA ultrasonic aspiration, echotomography, and Doppler flowmeter. I have had the chance to utilize these new technologies all at a time and have come to the conclusion that we are facing the dawn of a new methodology which has already shown its validity and lack of inconveniences, and whose object is to increase the precision of neurological surgery. The technological development is still going on, and some improvements are to be foreseen. Laser scalpel is splitting the initial laser surgery into NO TOUCH and TOUCH surgery with laser. As new instrumentarium will be developed, a variable and tunable beam will become available. For example, in a few years Free Electron Laser will further add to the progress in this field.

Neurosurgical Procedures by Alba Scerrati,Pasquale De Bonis Pdf

In the last few years, the development of new technologies in the medical field has allowed procedures and improved surgical techniques to be performed, which until recently would have been unthinkable.Modern neurosurgery is forever tied to technological progress: the development of robotics and robotic-assisted surgery; enhanced visualization, perfusion, and function monitoring in vascular surgery; new techniques of bone reconstruction; new cerebral imaging tools; and alternative treatments such as laser interstitial thermal therapy or immunotherapy for tumors. This book is designed to be a comprehensive introduction to these new developments and to their application in clinical practice. We have tried to provide a unique background and insights to coherently present these new technologies.

Future Of Technology In Medicine, The: From Cyborgs To Curing Paralysis by Julian Gendreau,Nolan J Brown,Shane Shahrestani,Ronald Sahyouni Pdf

What is machine learning? What is the current state of prosthetics in healthcare? Can scientists cure paralysis? Are supercomputers composed of human DNA real? These are all questions contemplated by both highly educated biomedical engineers and individuals without formal scientific training that have simple interests in medicine. Technology, undoubtedly, has given rise to advancements in many diverse areas of our lives today. It has led to improvements in the ways we complete business transactions, the ways we use social media to connect with others, and in the methods we use to treat patients in medicine. This is especially true, when examining neuroscience approaches in technology, otherwise known as neuroengineering. Concepts such as machine learning and artificial intelligence will one day assist practitioners in making more accurate and superior medical diagnoses. Novel prosthetics are currently being devised utilizing intracranial brain computer interfaces to recreate patient thoughts for controlling these prosthetics. Supercomputers, composed of human genetic material, are being utilized to make processing speeds faster than current computers by magnitudes of speed. With all of these advancements, medical technology is a burgeoning and interesting area of study. In this book, the authors discuss these technological advancements of healthcare in 14 comprehensive chapters specifically designed to be read and understood by any individual interested in learning more about technology in medicine. Co-author, Nolan Brown has over 100 peer-reviewed publications in the neurosurgical and neuroengineering literature. Dr Shane Shahrestani MD, PhD, participated in the world's first portable stroke detection device utilizing magnetic fields. He currently has NIH grant funding for the device. Dr Ronald Sahyouni MD, PhD, has novel work in myoelectric prosthetic devices. From discussing topics such as creating the first human cyborgs, to discussing topics on humankind's first attempt at curing paralysis, this book takes an informative approach to educate interested individuals regardless of their educational background.
