Meet the Rabbis by Brad H. Young Pdf

Meet the Rabbis explains to the reader how rabbinic thought was relevant to Jesus and the New Testament world, and hence should be relevant to those people today who read the New Testament. In this sense, rabbinic thought is relevant to every aspect of modern life. Rabbinic literature explores the meaning of living life to its fullest, in right relationship with God and humanity. However, many Christians are not aware of rabbinic thought and literature. Indeed, most individuals in the Western world today, regardless of whether they are Christians, atheists, agnostics, secular community leaders, or some other religious and political persuasions, are more knowledgeable of Jesus' ethical teachings in the Sermon the Mount than the Ethics of the Fathers in a Jewish prayer book. The author seeks to introduce the reader to the world of Torah learning. It is within this world that the authentic cultural background of Jesus' teachings in ancient Judaism is revealed. Young uses parts of the New Testament, especially the Sermon on the Mount, as a springboard for probing rabbinic method. The book is an introduction to rabbinic thought and literature and has three main sections in its layout: Introduction to Rabbinic Thought, Introduction to Rabbinic Literature, and Meet the Rabbis, a biographical description of influential Rabbis from Talmudic sources.

Matthew’s Parable of the Royal Wedding Feast by Ruth Christa Mathieson Pdf

Ruth Christa Mathieson’s unique reading of Matthew’s parable of the royal wedding feast (Matt 22:1–14), which concludes with the king’s demand that one of the guests be bound and cast out into the outer darkness, focuses on the means of the underdressed guest’s expulsion. Using sociorhetorical interpretation, Mathieson draws the parable into conversation with early Jewish narratives of the angel Raphael binding hands and feet (1 Enoch; Tobit) and the protocol for expelling individuals from the community in Matt 18. She asserts that readers are invited to consider if the person who is bound and cast out is a danger to the little ones of the community of faith unless removed and restrained.

Judaism in Motion by Sibylle Lustenberger Pdf

In Israel, where the Orthodox rabbinate wields historically sanctioned influence over the legal definitions of marriage and parenthood, same-sex parenthood raises important questions such as what constitutes belonging to the national collective, who has the authority to define the norms of reproduction, and where the boundaries of Orthodox Judaism begin and end. Judaism in Motion addresses these questions from a transgenerational perspective that pays heed to how religiously informed rules, norms, and practices of transferring material properties, names, and societal belonging are adopted and transformed. It presents a detailed ethnographic account of the dynamic interaction between kinship, religion, and the state that complicates the commonly held assumption that places same-sex parenthood in a radically secular sphere that stands in stark opposition to Orthodox Judaism. Taking same-sex parenthood as a prism through which society at large is reflected, this volume further explores how transformations of societal structures take place, and what flexibility and leeway exist in organized religions.

Sex, Lies, and Rabbis: Breaking a Sacred Trust by Charlotte Rolnick Schwab Pdf

Sex, Lies, and Rabbis: Breaking a Sacred Trust by Charlotte Rolnick Schwab, Ph.D. is a powerful book, a combination of memoir and nonfiction, about what happens when clergy, specifically, rabbis, are deified. It is about the betrayal and the cover up of the betrayal of teen aged girls and women by male rabbis, and thereby, the betrayal of these rabbis wives, families, congregations, communities, denominations, and all Judaism. Two murders are connected to rabbis sexual abuse. One rabbi is awaiting retrial for allegedly hiring a hit man to murder his wife because of his sexual misconduct. This author writes about her own frightening, shocking experience as the wife of a rabbi-perpetrator of sexual abuse of other women, his violence toward her, and threat to kill her if she told about his nefarious double life. The book delineates in one volume: the crisis in the rabbinate, in congregational Judaism; what needs to be done to bring about healing and change; gives description of cases of rabbis sexual abuse as told to the author (these cases are all composites; the victims/survivors identities are disguised), and as reported in the media, including the two murders related to rabbis sexual abuse; the alarming extent of this problem; outlines policies that synagogues and denominations need to adopt; provides definitions of sexual abuse; discusses the kinds of personalities of rabbis which can lead to rabbis becoming sexual predators; and offers some suggestions for prevention. The book offers a Resources List and extensive Bibliography, including articles from Jewish and secular newspapers around the country, about rabbis sexual abuse. The book provides a healing program geared toward Jewish victims/survivors or rabbis sexual abuse; it can be adapted for victims/survivors of abuse by other clergy and of other kinds of abuse, including abuse by batterers. Women who suffered abuse of any kind will find this book validating and helpful for healing and recovery. "12 Steppers" will be especially interested in this book. The book is helpful to people of all religions who are experiencing the crisis of their religious authorities sexual abuse and covering up of that abuse, including Buddhists, Catholics, and Protestants. It is an urgent read for all Jewish people concerned about the safety of their teen aged children and women, and about the future of their religious organizations and communities. Books have been written about Catholic priests and Protestant ministers and sexual abuse; this is the first about rabbis sexual abuse. Rabbis Arthur Gross-Schaefer and Marcia Zimmerman, and Rev. Nils Friberg praise the book on the book jacket. Maj-Britt Rosenbaum, MD, psychiatrist and former Director of the Long Island Hillside Medical Center Sexuality Center, wrote the Preface. Gary Schoener, Ph.D., clinical psychologist, who treat both clergy-perpetrators and victims, wrote the Foreword.

American Rabbis by David J. Zucker Pdf

What makes this book really interesting is that Zucker compares the "facts" of the modern rabbinate with the "fictional" rabbinate; that is, with rabbis in novels and short stories written during the past fifty years. He offers selections from over one hundred works of fiction and nearly seventy-five fiction writers, including: Harry Kemelman, Allegra Goodman, Noah Gordon, Rhonda Shapiro-Rieser, Joseph Telushkin, Naomi Ragen, Philip Roth, Faye Kellerman, Bernard Malamud, Eileen Pollack, Herman Wouk and Alex J. Goldman - one of the few men who write about a rabbi who is also a woman. In addition, Zucker devotes important chapters to God, Israel and Tradition as well as to contemporary issues, such as assimilation, intermarriage and patrilineality. Further, he includes a major chapter on rabbis who are also women. Some "rabbi" fiction comes closer to reality than others do. The most famous of the fictional rabbis is "Rabbi David Small" of the Harry Kemelman mystery series. Beginning with Friday, the Rabbi Slept Late, Kemelman followed "Rabbi Small" through twenty-five years. To an outsider looking inside of this "weekday" rabbi series, the on-going tensions between "Rabbi Small" and his Board of Directors seem overdrawn. This is understandable considering that fiction often relies upon dramatic moments filled with strife to carry the plot. However to an insider, many of these conflicts are accurate. One of the unsolved mysteries of Kemelman's twelve books is "Rabbi Small's" survival of his congregational experience, a detail that is paralleled in the careers of many real rabbis. On the other side of this fact-fiction coin, some rabbi-centered fiction is far from reality. Historically, TV and the movies have portrayed rabbis as Orthodox men, as if only they were authentic. Further, many have been portrayed as ineffectual. Thankfully, "Rabbi Small" - televised in 1977 - was an exception to these "norms". All rabbis serve as priests, pastors, and companions through the life-cycles and life-crises of their c
