Memoir of Joshua Watson (Classic Reprint) by Edward Churton Pdf

Excerpt from Memoir of Joshua Watson It was naturally the wish of many who knew Joshua Watson, and remembered how for nearly half a century, and in times of more than ordinary interest, he had been one of the most unwearied public benefactors and wisest counsellors of the Church of England, that some record of his life and services should be preserved to another gene ration. But in his old age, with his powers of mind fresh and vigorous to the last, his characteristic modesty and meekness had always resisted the friendly entreaties that were made to persuade him to dictate any account of what he had done. He would sometimes meet such entreaties with an answer of gentle irony; at other times he would say, You are seeking access to a store-chamber of which the key is lost. There was, therefore, nothing left for those to whom his papers, or such papers as he had preserved, were con signed, but, by such light as was thus afforded, and by diligent enquiries made in all quarters among surviving friends, with more labour than can easily be conceived, to put together such a continuous narrative as could be con structed from unsifted and somewhat unpliable materials. Imperfect as it is, and disappointing as they fear it will be to many who think of him with love and reverence. The Oxford History of Anglicanism, Volume III by Rowan Strong Pdf

The Oxford History of Anglicanism is a major new and unprecedented international study of the identity and historical influence of one of the world's largest versions of Christianity. This global study of Anglicanism from the sixteenth century looks at how was Anglican identity constructed and contested at various periods since the sixteenth century; and what was its historical influence during the past six centuries. It explores not just the ecclesiastical and theological aspects of global Anglicanism, but also the political, social, economic, and cultural influences of this form of Christianity that has been historically significant in western culture, and a burgeoning force in non-western societies today. The chapters are written by international exports in their various historical fields which includes the most recent research in their areas, as well as original research. The series forms an invaluable reference for both scholars and interested non-specialists. Volume three of The Oxford History of Anglicanism explores the nineteenth century when Anglicanism developed into a world-wide Christian communion, largely, but not solely, due to the expansion of the British Empire. By the end of this period an Anglican Communion had come into existence as a diverse conglomerate of often competing Anglican identities with their often unresolved tensions and contradictions, but also with some measure of genuine unity. The volume examines the ways the various Anglican identities of the nineteenth century are both metropolitan and colonial constructs, and how they influenced the wider societies in which they formed Anglican Churches.

Science and Religion by Pietro Corsi Pdf

Science and Religion assesses the impact of social, political and intellectual change upon Anglican circles, with reference to Oxford University in the decades that followed the French Revolution and the Napoleonic wars. More particularly, the career of Baden Powell, father of the more famous founder of the Boy Scout movement, offers material for an important case-study in intellectual and political reorientation: his early militancy in right-wing Anglican movements slowly turned to a more tolerant attitude towards radical theological, philosophical and scientific trends. During the 1840s and 1850s, Baden Powell became a fearless proponent of new dialogues in transcendentalism in theology, positivism in philosophy, and pre-Darwinian evolutionary theories in biology. He was for instance the first prominent Anglican to express full support for Darwin's Origin of Species. Analysis of his many publications, and of his interaction with such contemporaries as Richard Whately, John Henry and Francis Newman, Robert Chambers, William Benjamin Carpenter, George Henry Lewes and George Eliot, reveals hitherto unnoticed dimensions of mid-nineteenth-century British intellectual and social life.

Evangelicals and Education by Khim Harris Pdf

This is the first history of English public schools founded by Evangelicals in the nineteenth century. Five existing public schools can be traced back to this period: Cheltenham College, Dean Close School, Monkton Combe School, Trent College, and St LawrenceÕs College. Some of these schools were set up in direct competition with new Anglo-Catholic schools, while others drew their inspiration from and, to a greater or lesser extent, were modelled on their rivals. Harris documents, for the first time, the rise of Evangelical societies such as the influential Church Association and the little-known Clerical and Lay Associations. An extensive bibliography and useful biographical survey of influential Evangelicals of the period completes this groundbreaking study.
