Memoirs of the Confederate War for Independence by Heros von Borcke Pdf

As was the custom in the 19th century, foreign nations sent observers to other nations' wars, where these observers could learn tactics, see the latest weaponry, and report back to their own country. General George B. McClellan was an observer of the Crimean War and saw the Siege of Sevestapol, which heavily influenced his tactics during the Civil War. The Confederacy had a few of them, most notably the British observer Arthur Fremantle, who witnessed Gettysburg. But Heros von Borcke had no intention of being an observer. Coming ashore in May 1862, the 6'4 "giant in gray" and his huge Solingen straight sword cut the ideal image for a cavalry officer, especially one under the swashbuckling J.E.B. Stuart's command. Heros von Borcke had a colorful career in service of the Confederacy, coming into contact with famous soldiers like the "Gallant" John Pelham and J.E.B. Stuart himself, who admired the Prussian and eventually made him chief of staff. Von Borcke was also present at some of the war's most noteworthy campaigns, including Stuart's famous ride around McClellan's army, the Battle of Fredericksburg, and the Battle of Yellow Tavern, where Stuart was mortally wounded. Von Borcke was nearly killed by a shot to the neck just before the Battle of Gettysburg, but he recovered to continue fighting in 1864 through the rest of the war. In 1876, von Borcke wrote these memoirs warmly recalling his Confederate comrades and descriptively telling the tale of the Civil War. When von Borcke died on May 10, 1895, 31 years to the date of the Battle of Yellow Tavern, it was due to complications from the grievous wound he suffered during the Battle of Middleburg in June 1863.

Memoirs of the Confederate War for Independence, Vol. 2 of 2 (Classic Reprint) by Heros Von Borcke Pdf

Excerpt from Memoirs of the Confederate War for Independence, Vol. 2 of 2Meanwhile the rain, which had been falling when we rode off from The Bower, had ceased, a keen north wind had set in, and it had begun to freeze hard, when, late at night, we reached Berry'ville, chilled, wet, and hungry. The provisions of the country had been more or less consumed by the troops who had preceded us on the march, and it was therefore regarded as exceedingly apropos that we were invited to supper by a prominent citizen, at whose pleasant house we greatly enj oyed a warm cup of tea, a capital old Virginia ham, and afterwards a pipe of Virginia tobacco before a roaring wood-fire.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Rebel Private: Front And Rear: Memoirs Of A Confederate Soldier by William A. Fletcher Pdf

“The recent rediscovery of Rebel Private: Front and Rear, effectively lost for decades, marks an authentic publishing event in the literature of the Civil War. A rare insight into the conflict from the point of view of a Confederate army enlisted man, this compelling memoir has been hailed by historians as a classic and indispensible key to understanding the Southern perspective. Margaret Mitchell even described it as her single most valuable source of research for Gone With the Wind. “This stunning document is the work of a common foot soldier blessed with extraordinary perception and articulateness. After joining the famed Texas Brigade under Stonewall Jackson. Private William A. Fletcher saw action at Second Manassas, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Chancellorsville, and Chickamauga. He was wounded several times and escaped from a moving Union prison train before the South’s surrender. In 1907, he published this powerfully evocative account of his exploits, a volume of frank, detailed recollections that spares none of the horror, courage, or absurdity of war. But a fire destroyed all but a few copies before they could be distributed. One copy, however, did make its way to the Library of Congress, where it was eventually discovered. Today, this colorful work has become the voice of the Civil War front-line grunt, speaking to the modern reader with the intensity of personal experience and a vividness of detail that gives it a riveting you-are-there quality.”- Print ed. “Get this riveting book. Fletcher’s description of Gettysburg surpasses almost everything I’ve read anywhere about that battle, including—gasps!—Michael Shaara’s The Killer Angels.”—Jeff Guinn, Fort Worth Star-Telegram “Epitomizes unsung, unintentional greatness.... Readers find themselves in the trenches.... May become seminal reading for Civil War scholars and history buffs.” —St. Louis Post-Dispatch
