Camp-Fire, Memorial-Day, and Other Poems (Classic Reprint) by Kate Brownlee Sherwood Pdf

Excerpt from Camp-Fire, Memorial-Day, and Other Poems Memories of the War. Whenever I hear the fife and the drum, And the bugle wildly play, My heart is stirred like a frightened bird, And struggles to break away; For the tramp of the Volunteers I hear, And the Captain's sharp command: "Left Left! Left!" He is near And drilling his eager band. For the women and men were at one that day, In a purpose grand and great; But the men are away in a stormy fray, And the women must watch and wait. And some were as brown as the tawny South, And some like the dawn were fair; And here was the lad with his girlish mouth, And there was the beard of care. But whether from farm or from fold they drew, From the shop or the school-boy's seat, About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Memorial Day (Decoration Day): Its Celebration, Spirit, and Significance as Related in Prose and Verse, With a Non-Sectional Anthology of the Civil War IN harmony with the generous non-sectional spirit Characterizing Our Memorial Day celebration, no dis crimination has been shown in this collection between the literature of South and North. For our secular All Souls' Day knows neither North nor South, Blue nor Gray. The Great Remembrance, and Other Poems (Classic Reprint) by Richard Watson Gilder Pdf

Excerpt from The Great Remembrance, and Other Poems So long ago it seems, so long ago, Behold, our sons, grown men since those great days, Bom Since the last clear bugle ceased to blow Its summons down the valley; Since the bays Shook with the roar of fort and answering fleet, Our very children look into our eyes And find strange records, with a mute surprise, As they some curious traveler might greet Who kept far countries in his musing mind, Beyond the weltering seas, the mountain-walls behind. And yet it was this land, and not another, Where blazed war's flames and rolled the battle-cloud. In all this land there was no home where brother, Father, or son hurried not forth; where bowed N o broken-hearted woman when pale Death Laid his cold finger on the loved one's breath. Like -to a drama did the scene unroll, Some dark, majestic drama of the soul, Wherein all strove as actors, hour by hour, Yet breathless watched the whole swift, tragic Faithful did each his little part essay. Memorial Day Oration by James Shera Montgomery Pdf

Excerpt from Memorial Day Oration: May 30, 1913 We lift our eyes from the brow of earth, away from these solitudes, and we behold the fullness of life, the big prospect of an ultimate triumph, our own Capital City. Here in the tumult of human nature, in the discipline of contest, in the great university of life, she challenges both intellect and heart and ministers to the country and the world. God bless her! May her gates ever be open to allow all their fullest inherit ance, and on her breast may there ever live a government, just and humane, God-fearing and man-serving, borne of righteous ness, and wearing the crown jewels of the Father of us all. Memorial Day by Francis G. Blair Pdf

Excerpt from Memorial Day: May Thirtieth, 1921 Here I am at that little spot I've come so many thousand miles to find, and if my letter is hard to read you'll understand, for the tears are streaming down my face, as I write in a strange mixture of emotions. I am Sitting at the foot of his little white cross, nicely painted. I've said my Rosary and strewed his sleeping place With poppies and a few other flowers. I've taken a picture of it for you, and Will take others during the next few days when I come It is very quiet here - nothing to be heard but the sound of the skylarks, and they sing all the time. The cemetery is on a little slope and stretches before me, row after row of little White crosses, with an American flag floating high over them all. It is lovely! There are flower beds on the Sides, but on the graves them selves there is only grass or cut flowers; so that all are alike. They face the East, these men of ours, and I can imagine how the early rays of the rising sun strike the shining faces of the crosses, and how at sunset the last beams throw the shadows of this symbol over the resting places of our lads, with the arms outstretched as if covering them forever and ever in peace. And I am so glad to be here. I just sat down on the earth at the foot of his grave, and I thought and thought. I am sad - I am happy I am rested - just being here, and you would be too. It was hard to part with him, so I am sad. But he died as a brave soldier should and as he would have chosen to go, and for the flag, so I'm glad. And in this beautiful, quiet spot, so calm, so peaceful, so pretty, the busy World seems far away, and its troubles and turmoil seem of little account, so I am rested and contented. Seeing this place as I do, I am more convinced than ever that Al would rather stay here, seemingly still in service with his men, row after row of them, the most striking monument we could ever erect to our beloved country, and the part she played in the war. On the right, as you approach the cemetery, runs a road; on the left is a lovely field of grain, and all around runs a border of poppies. I put some on his grave, and shall press one that nestled close to his little cross, as I took the picture. I did not look for any of the other graves today - this day was just Al's, but the next time I come I'll find the others and take pictures of them for their folks at home. Perpetual Light by William Rose Benét Pdf

Excerpt from Perpetual Light: A Memorial I think that is the truth. This is the only means I have at present of acknowledging publicly the vast debt I owe to her. As I turn these poems over - if they are even to be called poems - I realize that they can never begin to express what 'her personality was. The earliest ones were written by a boy who was in love, and the latest by a man who has suddenly stepped into the dark. Those between are fragments from the days when we were struggling along together at the everyday tasks and outside interests and dreams that possessed us. The war entered our lives to change them in September, 1917. The poem, Man Possessed, was written within sound of her actual voice, the others all in absence from her at various times and in moods made strange by absence. And yet this is all I have at present to give in her memory. But I hold by these because - though they are poor, freakish fragments as far as any real expression of her is concerned - they were made for her.
