Men and Books by Austin Phelps Pdf
Excerpt from Men and Books: Or Studies in Homiletics; Lectures Introductory to the Theory of Preaching A thoroughly trained preacher is first a man, at home among men: he is then a scholar, at home in libraries. No other profession equals that of the pulpit in its power to absorb and appropriate to its own uses the world of real life in the present and the world of the past as it lives in books. A very essential part of a preacher's culture, therefore, concerns his use of these two resources of professional power. The large majority of the topics commonly treated by professors of homiletics as miscellanies will be found to arrange themselves naturally in these two lines of discussion. By so arranging them, I have sought to gain the concentration of unity and the cumulation of order. Like the Lectures on "The Theory of Preaching," in a former volume, these discussions retain the form and style of the lecture-room in which they were delivered, in response to the practical inquiries of students on the eve of entrance upon their lifes work. Almost no other changes have been made than those which were necessary in the mechanical revision for the press. It should be observed, respecting that portion of this work which discusses the study of books, that its design is limited. Deep Preaching by J. Kent Edwards Pdf
J. Kent Edwards recalls a story that late pastor J. Vernon McGee told about seeing children in South Africa playing a game of marbles in the dust with real diamonds. The precious stones were being handled with no regard for their true worth. Edwards fears the same thing happens today when preachers offer Scriptural truth to listeners without being completely overwhelmed by its greatness themselves in the process. Deep Preaching is his call to "rethink" preaching. Edwards helps preachers learn to preach the word in ways that will powerfully change the lives of hearers. He contends that sermons "need not settle comfortably on the lives of the listeners like dust on a coffee table." He encourages preachers to join him in casting off the lines that moor their ministries to the status-quo and make every effort to steer their preaching out of the "comfortable shallows." He urges them to preach deep sermons rather than superficial ones, moving "beyond the yawn-inspiring to the awe-inspiring, from the trite to the transforming."

Sacred Rhetorical Education in 19th Century America by Michael-John DePalma Pdf
This book offers new insight into the ways rhetorical educators’ religious motives influenced the shape of nineteenth-century rhetorical education and invites scholars of writing and rhetoric to consider what the study of religiously-animated pedagogies might reveal about rhetorical education itself. The author studies the rhetorical pedagogy of Austin Phelps, the prominent preacher and professor of sacred rhetoric at Andover Theological Seminary, and his theologically-motivated adaptation of rhetorical education to fit the exigencies of preachers at the first graduate seminary in the United States. In disclosing how Phelps was guided by his Christian motives, the book offers a thorough examination of how professional rhetoric was taught, learned, and practiced in nineteenth-century America. It also provides an enriched understanding of rhetorical theories and pedagogies in American seminaries, and contributes deepened awareness of the ways religious motives can function as resources that enable the reshaping of rhetorical theory and pedagogy in generative ways. Exploring the implications of Phelps’s rhetorical theory and pedagogy for future studies of religious rhetoric, histories of rhetorical education, and twenty-first century writing pedagogy, this book will be essential reading for scholars and students of rhetoric, education, American history, religious education, and writing studies.
