Men of the World by Jeff Hearn Pdf

Men of the World will be seized upon by academics and activists facing up to the persistence, proliferation and transnationalization of patriarchies. - Cynthia Cockburn, City University, London and University of Warwick "This is an important, thought-provoking and incredibly timely book from one of the leading scholars in the field of men and masculinities. I cannot praise this wonderful book highly enough." - Richard Collier, Newcastle University "In this lively and engaging new book, Hearn looks back over nearly 40 years in feminist-framed studies of men and masculinities, and also forward to the futuristic scenarios through which gender power is currently evolving in transpatriarchal contexts." - Terrell Carver, University of Bristol What have men and globalization got to do with each other? How are men shaping and being shaped by globalization? How is globalization gendered? Why do many books on globalization fail to discuss gender relations? And why do many of those that do omit an explicit and developed analysis of men and gender relations? Men of the World brings together autobiographical reflections and memories on changing personal locations, contemporary empirical studies on major power processes, and up to date theoretical development. It considers the implications of debates on globalization for analyzing men, and the implications of debates on men and masculinities for globalization, transnational change and transnational patriarchies, as part of engagement and critique focused on the global North. Specific chapters address diverse transnational issues: transnational bodies and emotions in violence, violation and militarism; transnational organizing across states, big business, global finance, and activism; transnational movements in the environment, migration, and information and communication technologies and sexualities; and finally, challenges to the gender category of ′men′. An essential read for students and researchers of gender, sexuality, masculinity, intersectionality, and globalization across the social sciences. Jeff Hearn is Guest Faculty Research Professor, Gender Studies, Örebro University, Sweden; Professor of Management and Organization, Hanken School of Economics, Finland; Professor of Sociology, University of Huddersfield, UK.

Still a Man's World by Christine L. Williams Pdf

Men who do "women's work" have consistently been the butt of jokes, derided for their lack of drive and masculinity. In this eye-opening study, Christine Williams provides a wholly new look at men who work in predominantly female jobs. Having conducted extensive interviews in four cities, Williams uncovers how men in four occupations—nursing, elementary school teaching, librarianship, and social work—think about themselves and experience their work. Contrary to popular imagery, men in traditionally female occupations do not define themselves differently from men in more traditional occupations. Williams finds that most embrace conventional, masculine values. Her findings about how these men fare in their jobs are also counterintuitive. Rather than being surpassed by the larger number of women around them, these men experience the "glass escalator effect," rising in disproportionate numbers to administrative jobs at the top of their professions. Williams finds that a complex interplay between gendered expectations embedded in organizations, and the socially determined ideas workers bring to their jobs, contribute to mens' advantages in these occupations. Using a feminist psychoanalytic perspective, Williams calls for more men not only to cross over to women's occupations, but also to develop alternative masculinities that find common ground with traditionally female norms of cooperation and caring. Until the workplace is sexually integrated and masculine and feminine norms equally valued, it will unfortunately remain "still a man's world."

Guyland by Michael Kimmel Pdf

One of the most eminent scholars and writers on men and masculinity and the author of the critically acclaimed Manhood in America turns his attention to the culture of guys, aged 16 to 26: their attitudes, their relationships, their rules, and their rituals. “Kimmel is our seasoned guide into a world that, unless we are guys, we barely know exists. As he walks with us through dark territories, he points out the significant and reflects on its meaning.”—Mary Pipher, Ph.D., author of Reviving Ophelia The passage from adolescence to adulthood was once clear. Today, growing up has become more complex and confusing, as young men drift casually through college and beyond—hanging out, partying, playing with tech toys, watching sports. But beneath the appearance of a simple extended boyhood, a more dangerous social world has developed, far away from the traditional signposts and cultural signals that once helped boys navigate their way to manhood—a territory Michael Kimmel has identified as "Guyland." In mapping the troubling social world where men are now made, Kimmel offers a view into the minds and times of America's sons, brothers, and boyfriends, and he works toward redefining what it means to be a man today—and tomorrow. Only by understanding this world and this life stage can we enable young men to chart their own paths, stay true to themselves, and emerge safely from Guyland as responsible and fully formed male adults.

The World Is Full of Married Men by Jackie Collins Pdf

First published in 1968, The World is Full of Married Men was branded as “shocking,” especially coming from a female author but despite being banned in several countries for its scandalous content became a #1 bestseller in just two weeks! Always ahead of her time, in her racy debut, Jackie Collins flips on its head the hypocritical double standard of it being okay for men to sleep around but not for women. Successful London ad executive David Cooper is still sexy at forty. Plus, he’s got money and power, and therefore, any woman he wants for as long as he wants. His marriage to his nagging wife, Linda, has never gotten in the way of that. When gorgeous starlet Claudia Parker enters the picture, he becomes so smitten that he’s ready to divorce Linda to marry Claudia. But Claudia has no intentions of being shackled by a ring on her finger. When the relationship falls apart, he vies to get his wife back. Except Linda’s already moved on, swept up in a racy romance with Hollywood producer Jay Grossman. Despite David’s pleas, there’s no way she’s giving up her glamorous new lifestyle for the likes of him. David soon becomes a broken shell of a man, facing his fifties alone. As his once-meteoric career success takes a catastrophic dive, he finds comfort in the bottle and in the arms of his dowdy secretary, Harriet, while Linda’s life only gets better. Woman World by Aminder Dhaliwal Pdf

THE HILARIOUS AND WILDLY POPULAR INSTAGRAM COMIC ABOUT A WORLD WITH NO MEN With her startling humor, it’s no surprise that Aminder Dhaliwal’s web comic Woman World has a devoted audience of over 120,000 readers, updated biweekly with each installment earning an average of 25,000 likes. Now, readers everywhere will delight in the print edition as Dhaliwal seamlessly incorporates feminist philosophical concerns into a series of perfectly-paced strips that skewer perceived notions of femininity and contemporary cultural icons. D+Q’s edition of Woman World will include new and previously unpublished material. When a birth defect wipes out the planet’s entire population of men, Woman World rises out of society’s ashes. Dhaliwal’s infectiously funny instagram comic follows the rebuilding process, tracking a group of women who have rallied together under the flag of “Beyonce’s Thighs.” Only Grandma remembers the distant past, a civilization of segway-riding mall cops, Blockbusters movie rental shops, and “That’s What She Said” jokes. For the most part, Woman World’s residents are focused on their struggles with unrequited love and anxiety, not to mention that whole “survival of humanity” thing. Woman World is an uproarious and insightful graphic novel from a very talented and funny new voice.

Mad Men by Dyna Moe Pdf

MAD MEN: THE ILLUSTRATED WORLD is an engaging celebration of the life and times of the 'mad men' of Madison Avenue in the early 1960s. This book is by turns funny, kitschy, sophisticated and wry, and this full colour miscelleny is both a memento and a stand-alone salute to the time of slim suits, prosperity, cocktails, and the golden age of advertising. With chapters on the office, the home, fashion and beauty, mainstream and counterculture, travel and rainy day activities, this all-encompassing anthology is the only companion a fan will ever need. The only official MAD MEN publication, this tie-in to the wildly popular and cult television series captures the spirit of the era as it might be imagined on one of Sal Ramano's storyboards.

World Without Men by Charles Eric Maine Pdf

2012 Reprint of 1958 Edition. Exact facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. The blurb on the thirty-five cent Ace paperback likens Charles Eric Maine's 1958 novel "World Without Men" to George Orwell's "1984" and Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World." Ordinarily one would regard such a comparison skeptically. Nevertheless, while not rising to the artistic level of the Orwell and Huxley masterpieces, "World Without Men" merits being rescued from the large catalogue of 1950s paperback throwaways. Maine's bases his vision of an ideological dystopia not on criticism of socialism or communism per se, nor of technocracy per se, but rather of feminism. Maine saw in the nascent feminism of his day (the immediate postwar period) a dehumanizing and destructive force, tending towards totalitarianism, which had the potential to deform society in radical, unnatural ways. Maine believed that feminism, as he understood it, derived its fundamental premises from hatred of, not respect for, the natural order. He also believed that feminism entailed a rebellion against sexual dimorphism.

A captivating blend of personal biography and public drama, The Wise Men introduces the original best and brightest, leaders whose outsized personalities and actions brought order to postwar chaos: Averell Harriman, the freewheeling diplomat and Roosevelt's special envoy to Churchill and Stalin; Dean Acheson, the secretary of state who was more responsible for the Truman Doctrine than Truman and for the Marshall Plan than General Marshall; George Kennan, self-cast outsider and intellectual darling of the Washington elite; Robert Lovett, assistant secretary of war, undersecretary of state, and secretary of defense throughout the formative years of the Cold War; John McCloy, one of the nation's most influential private citizens; and Charles Bohlen, adroit diplomat and ambassador to the Soviet Union.

Seven Men Who Rule the World From the Grave by Dave Breese Pdf

Though their bodies lie cold and dormant, the grave cannot contain the influence these seven men have had on today's world. They continue to rule because they have altered the thinking of society. They generated philosophies that have been ardently grasped by masses of people but are erroneous and antiscriptural. Today these ideas pervade our schools, businesses, homes, and even the church. As we continue to unknowingly subscribe to their philosophies, we keep the grave open for Charles Darwin, Karl Marx, Julius Wellhausen, John Dewey, Sigmund Freud, John Maynard Keynes, and Soren Kierkegaard. Dave Breese warns us of the dangers of believing unreservedly the ideas of these seven men. He also reminds us of the only man whose life and words we can trust completely- Jesus Christ.
