Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy,John Michael Cooper,Hans-Günter Klein Pdf

English summary: Like many before and perhaps even many more after him, the young Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy saw in Italy the country of the greatest joy of living. In his letters that he wrote home to his family in Berlin from Venice, and even more in the ones from Rome, he was full of enthusiasm. It is therefore only natural that the composer soon went about writing a symphony. How far he had got with the symphony during his journey to Italy in the winter of 1830/1831 is not known, as no musical manuscripts have survived from this period. What has survived is the autograph score of the A-major symphony (later to be called the "Italian" symphony), written down from January to April 1833 in Berlin. It was used for the premiere of the symphony on 13 May 1833 and served as the basis for the posthumously published first edition; it transmits the reading by which the symphony has been known until today. It is little known that Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy worked on the symphony again in 1834, revising the movements II to IV, partly with substantial changes. He left out the first movement - he thought that he would have to rewrite it altogether and shied away from doing so. Thus, the second score - which is now held in the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin - Preussischer Kulturbesitz, together with the 1833 autograph - remained unfinished. Additional fragments have survived, which belong to the autograph score of 1833; the composer had taken them out of his autograph during a major revision in March/April 1833 (i.e., before the premiere).

The Soul of the Journey by Diana Ambache Pdf

Brother and sister Felix and Fanny Mendelssohn enjoyed a rare bond: they were intimate companions and theirs was one of the most significant musical relationships of the 19th century. They shared and commented on each other's compositions, each highly appreciative of the other but also offering frank, critical advice. Their travels produced some great music – Felix's best loved works, the Hebrides Overture and the Scottish Symphony, were inspired by his 1829 visit to Scotland, whilst Fanny's innovative piano cycle Das Jahr was a musical response to the tour of Italy she made in 1839–40. Combining letters and sketches with an accompanying narrative describing their journeys, this is a wonderful celebration of the two Mendelssohns and a portrait of Scotland and Italy of the time as seen through the eyes of two of the Romantic movement's most acclaimed composers.

Symphonie in A by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy Pdf

In 1832, the Royal Philharmonic Society of London honoured the young German composer Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy with several commissions. One of the works composed as a result was the A major symphony, the "Italian", based on Mendelssohn's experiences in Italy in 1830 and 1831. The work was premiered in 1833, conducted by the composer. Today, the Italian Symphony has a firm place in the canon of classical masterworks, though at its premiere and both the following performances, the work was not entirely positively received. Mendelssohn himself was unhappy with it. In 1834, he revised the last three movements, but did not complete this revision. To this day, the early version of the "Italian" is the one played everywhere, whilst the revised version has remained to a large extent unknown. Bärenreiter's critical new edition, edited by Christopher Hogwood, includes all the performance material for the complete version of 1833, together with the last three movements in the composer's revised version. Conductors can now choose between the early and revised versions; the revised one includes the first movement from the early version. - Publisher.

Mendelssohn by Michael Steen Pdf

Welcome to The Independent's new ebook series The Great Composers, covering fourteen of the giants of Western classical music. Extracted from Michael Steen's book The Lives and Times of the Great Composers, these concise guides, selected by The Independent's editorial team, explore the lives of composers as diverse as Mozart and Puccini, reaching from Bach to Brahms, set against the social, historical and political forces which affected them, to give a rounded portrait of what it was like to be alive and working as a musician at that time. That Mendelssohn was phenomenally gifted is beyond question. Born into a wealthy German Jewish family at the beginning of the 19th century, he was a boy prodigy of the piano, he wrote poetry, painted well, played several instruments, spoke several languages, and was an excellent athlete. At only sixteen he composed the celebrated Octet for Strings, one of the finest pieces in the chamber repertoire. He made friends with Goethe, whom he met as a boy of twelve when the poet was in his 70s, and at twenty was a prime mover in the revival of Bach's music to which we owe so much. Not only an inspiring conductor who did much to raise the standards of performance, he also wrote many works which found enduring fame: his Violin Concerto in E minor, his oratorio Elijah (particularly beloved of the English), his Italian Symphony, his 48 miniatures, Songs Without Words, and his incidental music for A Midsummer Night's Dream, which contains the famous Wedding March. Michael Steen follows Mendelssohn's progress from his cultured and cosmopolitan background to the years of relentless travelling (he went ten times to England and became friends with Queen Victoria and Prince Albert), and his directorship of music at Dusseldorf and at Leipzig – years that would see him exhaust himself until his early death just six months after the death of his adored sister, Fanny.
