The Lost Art of Disciple Making by LeRoy Eims Pdf

"Every believer in Jesus Christ deserves the opportunity of personal nurture and development." says LeRoy Eims. But all too often the opportunity isn't there. We neglect the young Christian in our whirl of programs, church services, and fellowship groups. And we neglect to raise up workers and leaders who can disciple young believers into mature and fruitful Christians. In simple, practical, and biblical terms, LeRoy Eims revives the lost art of disciple making. He explains: - How the early church discipled new Christians - How to meet the basic needs of a growing Christian - How to spot and train potential workers - How to develop mature, godly leaders "True growth takes time and tears and love and patience," Eims states. There is no instant maturity. This book examines the growth process in the life of a Christian and considers what nurture and guidance it takes to develop spiritually qualified workers in the church.

Life Together in Christ by Ruth Haley Barton Pdf

Best Book of Spiritual Formation, from Byron Borger, Hearts and Minds Bookstore Have you joined a church or small group in hopes of experiencing real life change, only to be disappointed? Have you sat through inspiring sermons about what is possible when Christians gather together in mutually edifying relationships, only to recognize how cynical you have become after many failed attempts? Community may be one of the most over-promised, under-delivered aspects of the Christian life today. Individuals remain selfish and stuck in their ways. Communities become spiritually lifeless or even fall apart because we don't know how to experience transformation together. Transforming community does not come primarily from listening to inspiring preaching or adding another church program. It emerges as we embrace a shared commitment to the attitudes, practices and behaviors that open us to Christ in our midst. And that's where Life Together in Christ comes in. Reflecting on the story of the two disciples who meet Christ on the Emmaus Road, Ruth Haley Barton offers this interactive guide for small groups of spiritual companions who are ready to encounter Christ in transforming ways—right where they are on the road of real life.

The Spirit-Empowered Leader Workbook by Paul Leavenworth Pdf

The Spirit-Empowered Leader Workbook was designed to help leaders establish a biblical understanding and experience of the Holy Spirit filled and empowered life for effective leadership. Jesus told his disciples: I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father." (John 14:10-12, NIV, italics added) An understanding of the nature, role, and empowering of the Holy Spirit is essential if we are to be like Jesus, do what he did, and do even "greater works" than he did by fulfilling the Great Commission through demonstrating and communicating the gospel of the kingdom to all nations. This is what we will attempt to do as we work through this workbook. Each of these workbooks is formatted using the IDEA approach to transformational learning. The goal of the IDEA approach is to facilitate the "gracious work" of God through his word and spirit to transform us "into his likeness with ever increasing glory..." (II Corinthians 3:18, NIV) Each chapter will begin with an Introduction (I) followed by Discovery (D), Explanation (E), and Application (A) sections. Each chapter can be worked through as a unit or in sequence as a whole with a variety of process options including individual, small group, and various course applications. The Spirit-Empowered Leader Workbook is designed as a stand-alone or a companion to other workbooks in The Leadership Development Series. Other workbooks in this series include The Bible-Centered Leader Workbook; The Discipleship and Mentoring Workbook; and a "best of" or introductory workbook for younger emerging leaders entitled The Discipleship and Leadership Workbook. Take your time and prayerfully and carefully read, study, discuss, apply, and evaluate your progress. Remember that becoming a spirit-empowered leader is not an objective as much as it is a process or lifestyle. It is not something we get, but something we become over time. Over the years we will be transformed by God and empowered to "be" about the Father's business (Luke 2:49).

Late Antique Letter Collections by Cristiana Sogno,Bradley K. Storin,Edward J. Watts Pdf

Bringing together an international team of historians, classicists, and scholars of religion, this volume provides the first comprehensive overview of the extant Greek and Latin letter collections of late antiquity (ca. 300–600 c.e.). Each chapter addresses a major collection of Greek or Latin literary letters, introducing the social and textual histories of each collection and examining its assembly, publication, and transmission. Contributions also reveal how collections operated as discrete literary genres, with their own conventions and self-presentational agendas. This book will fundamentally change how people both read these texts and use letters to reconstruct the social history of the fourth, fifth, and sixth centuries.

Discipled Leader by Preston Poore Pdf

"A must-read for every leader." —Dan T. Cathy, Chairman and CEO at Chick-fil-A, Inc. Preston Poore has spent decades in corporate America. Despite all the excellent advice he was given for growing in leadership, there was something missing: a way to bring his Christian beliefs to bear in his professional life, not just his personal life. So Preston sought his own answer to how his faith could impact his management of hundreds of employees. What he discovered was this: the first step wasn't adjusting his leadership style. Instead, he needed to let God change him before he could effect real change in his workplace. And in order to model discipleship to his team, he needed to first be discipled by the Spirit. Here, in the day-to-day practice of being a disciple of Jesus Christ, Poore found where his faith and exceptional leadership intersect. Through personal stories, biblical principles, and hands-on workplace guidance, Poore offers readers a unique look at this seldom-discussed connection. He challenges struggling leaders to engage in the hard work of daily discipleship. And he charges experienced leaders to return to the fundamentals of their faith, encouraging them to disciple other Christians with leadership potential. For anyone wrestling with how to bring faith to the workplace, whether it be a cubicle or a boardroom, Discipled Leader reveals that leadership doesn't begin behind the desk--it begins in the soul.

The Discipleship and Mentoring Workbook by Paul Leavenworth Pdf

The Discipleship and Mentoring Workbook is designed to help leaders establish a biblical understanding of discipleship and disciple-making (spiritual mentoring) for life and leadership. This workbook is part of The Leadership Development Series of workbooks designed to facilitate "transformational learning" for establishing a foundation that will stand the test of time and help us to meet the challenges of learning how to be "lovers in a dangerous time" (musician Bruce Cockburn). Jesus stated that, "God is spirit, and his worshippers [Disciples and Mentors] must worship in Spirit [Spirit-Empowered] and in truth [Bible-Centered]" John 4:24, NIV. From this passage I developed The Leadership Development Series that includes this workbook plus The Bible-Centered Leader Workbook; The Spirit-Empowered Leader Workbook; and The Discipleship and Leadership Workbook (that is a "best of" or introductory overview of the content in the other three workbooks in this series for younger emerging leaders). The Discipleship and Mentoring Workbook is designed as a stand-alone and/or companion to other workbooks in this series. Each chapter can be worked through as a unit or in sequence as a whole with a variety of process options including individual, small groups, and various course applications. Take your time and prayerfully and carefully read, study, discuss, apply, and evaluate your progress. Remember that becoming a disciple and mentor is not an objective as much as it is a process or lifestyle. We do not obtain these as much as we become them. Over the years, we will be transformed by God (discipleship) in order help others (spiritual mentoring) in their transformation process.

"Follow Me as I Follow Christ": A Discipleship Curriculum by Dr. T. Martin Flowers Pdf

“Follow Me as I Follow Christ” (FMIFC) is a curriculum designed to prepare young learners to lead based on Paul’s writings to Timothy in First and Second Timothy. The curriculum includes four modules, The Call of Leadership, Character of Leadership, Challenges of Leadership, and Charges to Leadership, which remind and inform the leader instructor while reforming and instructing the learner student. FMIFC uses Paul’s writings to Timothy to cultivate a learning environment of succession where mature leaders oversee the preparation of young learners to take their place. The FMIFC curriculum has as its foundation two concerns Paul had regarding Timothy – being a youthful leader (1 Tim. 4:12) and his ability to groom generational successors given their relationship (2 Tim. 2:2). The curriculum includes a workbook that allows the participants to work their way through critical passages, apply lessons learned, and connect Scripture with scholarly research. Many churches do not have a succession plan, nor are they making any preparations for the departure of their leadership. This curriculum will provide them with a tool for implementation. The foundational objectives for effectiveness emphasized in this course are: 1) For young learners to develop the confidence and competence required to lead a local church within two years; 2) For older leaders (instructors) to have a Pauline Development Guide to assess young learner development; and 3) For leaders to have the courage and content to hold other leaders accountable

José Martí, Cuban Apostle by Cintio Vitier,Daisaku Ikeda Pdf

Once called 'the wellspring of the revolution' by Fidel Castro, Jose Marti (1853-1895) is revered as one of the greatest figures in the history of Cuba. Not only was he instrumental in the late nineteenth-century cause of securing Cuban independence from Spain. He is also considered one of Cuba's most brilliant writers, orators and formative intellectuals, who provided inspiration to the young Fidel, Che and their fellow revolutionaries by dedicating his whole life to the goal of national political emancipation. Jose Marti suffered persecution and early imprisonment for his convictions, and in consequence is often referred to as the 'Cuban Apostle'. In this wide-ranging discussion of Marti's life, work and influence, distinguished Cuban poet Cintio Vitier and prominent Buddhist leader Daisaku Ikeda explore their subject's understanding of non-violence; his nationalism that was also a profound openness to difference and dialogue; his spirituality; his poetical writings; and most of all his fundamental dignity, humanity and self-mastery. The book explores above all the nature of sacrifice, and the cost of relinquishing personal happiness for the sake of a great cause. The discussants examine Marti's family life, including his difficult relationships with his wife - Carmen Zayas Bazan - and his parents, who distanced themselves from his revolutionary fervour. Comparisons are drawn between Marti's ideals and Nichiren Buddhism as a source of unfailing hope and courage. As Daisaku Ikeda, follower of Nichiren, says at one point in the dialogue: 'Self-mastery is the hardest thing of all. But to have a spiritual nature worthy of the name, a person must overcome himself, a task that only a true optimist can accomplish. Marti's perspicacity is revealed in his conviction that final victory in life is assured by such optimists.' Marti, like Nichiren, had the unerring ability to turn enemies into friends. And as Cintio Vitier and Daisaku Ikeda reveal, what set Marti apart was not his thought or ideas alone but what emanated from his words and found embodiment in his actions. It was thus that a follower at the time could say of him: we don't understand him, but we are ready to die for him.

However, many new religions not only survive but prosper, despite leadership transition. In this book, prominent scholars examine what happened to eleven new movements following the deaths of their leaders, and why. An Introduction by J. Gordon Melton serves to integrate the case studies.
