Mesmerism by William Lang Pdf

Excerpt from Mesmerism: Its History, Phenomena, and Practice; With Reports of Cases Developed in ScotlandAll the circumstances which are unfavourable to Mesmerism end in one fatal word, - contempt. Every thing tends to raise a laugh at its expense; and against a laugh who shall have the courage to contend? This is the last possible degradation. Men love the mysterious and the proscribed, but they shrink from the ridiculous. They can bear to be thought wicked, but not to be deemed fools; they will endure to be hated, but not to be despised. Now, Mesmerism has become not merely a persecuted, but a ridiculous faith. There is no pomp of circum stance about it to uphold the proselyte who is called upon to defend it to the death. The glory of martyr dom for its sake, is done away. There is no dig nity in suffering in such a cause.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Mesmerist's Manual of Phenomena and Practice by George Barth Pdf

Excerpt from The Mesmerist's Manual of Phenomena and Practice: With Directions for Applying Mesmerism to the Cure of Diseases, and the Methods of Producing Mesmeric Phenomena, Intended for Domestic Use and the Instruction of Beginners IN presenting this little Manual to the public, I seek to offer something which may be useful to those who desire a knowledge of the subject. I do not, for a moment, presume to say that I can teach that which is not already known. I claim nothing as a discoverer, - I am merely a retailer of other men's dis coveries. That which a man learns from others and then reduces to practical experiment, verifying and understanding by personal observation, he makes his own, - and may again teach or set it forth without being charged as a mere plagiarist. Mesmerism was well understood and practised, even in this country, before I was born; all relating to it which I now know and can tell has been already ascertained; it is therefore not personally a fault that I cannot teach anything not previously known; The information which I try to give in the following pages I know to be truth; the reader will judge if it be given plainly or obscurely; I can only hope for a favourable verdict if found worthy of it. I make no pretension to elegance of composition, seek not to produce a literary work, but am content if it be found plain and practical, and consequently useful. If I am charged with twice telling or repeating the same thing too often - be it so; I would rather tell too well than be obscure, or not tell plainly enough that which it is important the learner should clearly apprehend. Credulity by Emily Ogden Pdf

From the 1830s to the Civil War, Americans could be found putting each other into trances for fun and profit in parlors, on stage, and in medical consulting rooms. They were performing mesmerism. Surprisingly central to literature and culture of the period, mesmerism embraced a variety of phenomena, including mind control, spirit travel, and clairvoyance. Although it had been debunked by Benjamin Franklin in late eighteenth-century France, the practice nonetheless enjoyed a decades-long resurgence in the United States. Emily Ogden here offers the first comprehensive account of those boom years. Credulity tells the fascinating story of mesmerism’s spread from the plantations of the French Antilles to the textile factory cities of 1830s New England. As it proliferated along the Eastern seaboard, this occult movement attracted attention from Ralph Waldo Emerson’s circle and ignited the nineteenth-century equivalent of flame wars in the major newspapers. But mesmerism was not simply the last gasp of magic in modern times. Far from being magicians themselves, mesmerists claimed to provide the first rational means of manipulating the credulous human tendencies that had underwritten past superstitions. Now, rather than propping up the powers of oracles and false gods, these tendencies served modern ends such as labor supervision, education, and mediated communication. Neither an atavistic throwback nor a radical alternative, mesmerism was part and parcel of the modern. Credulity offers us a new way of understanding the place of enchantment in secularizing America.

Animal Magnetism, Or Mesmerism and Its Phenomena (Classic Reprint) by William Gregory Pdf

Excerpt from Animal Magnetism, or Mesmerism and Its Phenomena Among the aids to such study as I have indicated is an acquaintance with those states and conditions of the human spirit which Mesmerism reveals. Among the standard works on that subject, this volume of the late Dr. William Gregory, Professor of Chemistry in the Uni versity of Edinburgh, has always held its place. The present edition is identical with the second, which differed from the first only in the omission of some matter which has now, happily, become irrelevant and unnecessary. The first three chapters of the original edition have been omitted, because it is now no longer needful to defend the reality of the mesmeric phenomena with which Professor Gregory deals under the name of Animal Magnetism. That title, which most investigators have now agreed to abandon, is retained in deference to the author's choice, and because the work is well known under its present name.
