Metrology in Urban Drainage and Stormwater Management: Plug and pray by Francois Clemens,Jean-Luc Bertrand-Krajewski Pdf

This book presents the advancements made in applied metrology in the field of Urban Drainage and Storm water Management over the past two decades in scientific research as well as in practical applications. Given the broadness of this subject (measuring principles, uncertainty in data, data validation, data storage and communication, design, maintenance and management of monitoring networks, technical details of sensor technology), the focus is on water quantity and a sound metrological basis. The book offers common ground for academics and practitioners when setting up monitoring projects in urban drainage and storm water management. This will enable an easier exchange of results so as to allow for a faster scientific progress in the field. A second, but equally important goal, is to allow practitioners access to scientific developments and gained experience when it comes to monitoring urban drainage and storm water systems. In-depth description of international case studies covering all aspects discussed in the book are presented, along with self-training exercises and codes available for readers on a companion website.

Assessing Infiltration and Exfiltration on the Performance of Urban Sewer Systems by Bryan Ellis,Jean-Luc Bertrand-Krajewski Pdf

Sewer systems constitute a very significant heritage in European cities. Their structural quality and functional efficiency are key parameters to guarantee the transfer of domestic and industrial wastewater to treatment plants without infiltration nor exfiltration. Infiltration of groundwater is particularly detrimental to treatment plant efficiency, while exfiltration of wastewater can lead to groundwater contamination. The European research project APUSS (Assessing infiltration and exfiltration on the Performance of Urban Sewer Systems) was devoted to sewer infiltration and exfiltration questions. It was structured in three main Work Areas dealing respectively with i) the development of new measurement methods based on tracer experiments and accounting for detailed uncertainty analyses, ii) the implementation of models and software tools to integrate structural and experimental data and to facilitate data display, operational management and decision-making processes and iii) the integration of economic and operational questions by means of cost estimation, economic evaluation, performance indicators and multi-criteria methods applied to investment/rehabilitation strategies. This final report describes the objectives, methods and main results for each Work Area. References to detailed methods, protocols, reports and tools are given in this final report which will be an invaluable source of information for all those concerned with the performance of urban sewer systems.

Satellite Precipitation Measurement by Vincenzo Levizzani,Christopher Kidd,Dalia B. Kirschbaum,Christian D. Kummerow,Kenji Nakamura,F. Joseph Turk Pdf

This book offers a complete overview of the measurement of precipitation from space, which has made considerable advancements during the last two decades. This is mainly due to the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM), the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission, CloudSat and a carefully maintained constellation of satellites hosting passive microwave sensors. The book revisits a previous book, Measuring Precipitation from Space, edited by V. Levizzani, P. Bauer and F. J. Turk, published with Springer in 2007. The current content has been completely renewed to incorporate the advancements of science and technology in the field since then. This book provides unique contributions from field experts and from the International Precipitation Working Group (IPWG). The book will be of interest to meteorologists, hydrologists, climatologists, water management authorities, students at various levels and many other parties interested in making use of satellite precipitation data sets. Unchained Mind by Ricardo G. Williams Pdf

I took a three-year break from work to explore the topic of peace, love, and success. I spent the time analyzing my thoughts and the effects my thoughts had on my emotional state of mind. The things I found out were quite intriguing. I came to the realization that many of us are not living to our full potential. We live with a measured joy. We keep our happiness in check. Our smiles are met with a restriction from our breath, which makes it short-lived. We seldom breathe fully because our breath is interrupted by the depth of our thoughts. We never really let go fully. We are bound by layers of chains that have entangled our thinkingchains from an uncertain future, chains of work, chains of relationships, chains of our finances, too many chains to mention. My time away from work gave me the opportunity to explore how to break the chains. I admit that even a broken chain is not permanently broken but can be easily reunited if old habits are not changed. My book focuses on the actions we can take to break chains and keep them broken. My book explores how our thoughts control our destiny. It teaches thought control and the importance of silence. It teaches how to overcome fear, anger, negative thoughts, stress, and hatred. You will learn how to nurture your emotions, embrace moments, and the importance of spiritual peace. I will teach you how to live in thankfulness, with compassion, while activating love.

Forest-Water Interactions by Delphis F. Levia,Darryl E. Carlyle-Moses,Shin'ichi Iida,Beate Michalzik,Kazuki Nanko,Alexander Tischer Pdf

The United Nations has declared 2018-2028 as the International Decade for Action on Water for Sustainable Development. This is a timely designation. In an increasingly thirsty world, the subject of forest-water interactions is of critical importance to the achievement of sustainability goals. The central underlying tenet of this book is that the hydrologic community can conduct better science and make a more meaningful impact to the world’s water crisis if scientists are: (1) better equipped to utilize new methods and harness big data from either or both high-frequency sensors and long-term research watersheds; and (2) aware of new developments in our process-based understanding of the hydrological cycle in both natural and urban settings. Accordingly, this forward-looking book delves into forest-water interactions from multiple methodological, statistical, and process-based perspectives (with some chapters featuring data sets and open-source R code), concluding with a chapter on future forest hydrology under global change. Thus, this book describes the opportunities of convergence in high-frequency sensing, big data, and open source software to catalyze more comprehensive understanding of forest-water interactions. The book will be of interest to researchers, graduate students, and advanced undergraduates in an array of disciplines, including hydrology, forestry, ecology, botany, and environmental engineering.
