Microwave Fading with Airborne Terminals by Harold T. Dougherty Pdf
After a brief description of the significance of the radio refractive index and its variation in the atmosphere, a brief catalogue of fading mechanisms is presented. Attention is directed to the variety of fading mechanisms that are pertinent for the propagation of radio waves when one or both terminals are airborne. The general characteristics of those fading mechanisms are presented and the techniques available for the reduction of fading are described. The phenomenon of multipath fading is described. The distributions for multipath propagation are discussed and presented. The device of diversity reception (frequency or space) is outlined for reducing the fading due to multipath. The phenomenon of diffraction fading is described both for diffraction by the earth's surface and by the atmospheric layers. The resulting radio holes are then specified in terms of the geometry and the pertinent refractivity gradients. The avoidance of radio holes for one or more airborne terminals is discussed.
