Advances in Microwave and Radio Frequency Processing by M. Willert-Porada Pdf

Prometheus brought fire to mankind Arthur R. von Hippel “Dielectrics and Waves”, 1954 Our contribution? There are only few areas of research and development of a comparable scientific and technological extension as microwave and high frequency processing. “Pr- essing” means not only application of radiation of 300 MHz to 300 GHz f- quency to synthesis, heating or ionisation of matter but also generation, transm- sion and detection of microwave and radio frequency radiation. Microwave and high frequency sources positioned in the orbit are the foun- tion of modern satellite telecommunication systems, gyrotron tubes being pr- ently developed in different countries all over the world will most probably be the major devices to open up a new era of energy supply to mankind be means of - sion plasma. Although initiated by military purposes during the Second World War (RADAR, Radio Detection and Ranging), microwave and high frequency utilisation has spread over almost every important aspect of normal day life since than, from individual mobile phones and kitchen microwave ovens to industrial food processing, production of composites as sustainable building materials, green chemistry, medical applications and finally infrastructure installations like GPS and Galileo, to name only few examples. These different areas of microwave and high frequency radiation application can not be unified within one group of scientists and technologists. There are s- eral distinguished communities active e.g., in the area of telecommunication s- tems, strong microwaves for fusion plasma or plasma based materials processing.

Microwaves and Metals by Manoj Gupta,Eugene Wong Wai Leong Pdf

Using microwaves to treat metal-based materials is rapidly emerging as an energy-efficient tool to interact with metals for a number of processes such as sintering, melting, brazing, carburizing and annealing. Microwaves can sinter a wide variety of metal compacts with comparable or enhanced end properties, while at the same time delivering tremendous energy savings over conventional sintering. Microwave processes are therefore gaining increasing attention and adoption in both academia and industry. Gupta and Wong have written this comprehensive text to introduce readers to the world of microwaves and the interaction of microwaves with metals and metals-based formulations. The authors have combined numerous research results from a wide range of sources alongside their own work in the field. Also included are overviews of microwave heating of other non-metal materials and the equipment used for microwave-assisted metallurgy. With microwave techniques poised for widespread adoption, Microwaves and Metals is an essential text for all metallurgists and materials engineers. Provides a thorough grounding in microwave fundamentals and their application to metals processing Informs readers of the latest developments in the field Presents a convenient single source for all aspects of microwave processing of metals and materials Contains liberal illustration to compare and benchmark research results Introduces all the necessary equipment, preparing readers for real-world practice Microwaves and Metals is ideal for a post-graduate or advanced undergraduate course in materials science or metallurgy. Materials and metallurgical engineers in industry, who are keen on cheaper, faster techniques, will also benefit from this book.

Microwave Cooking and Processing by Charles R. Buffler Pdf

The general public first started taking notice of the microwave oven in 1975 when sales volume, for the first time, exceeded 1,000,000 units per year! In 1985, ovens were owned by over 50070 of U. S. households, and food compa nies were developing microwavable products in earnest. During this period microwave product developers found that very little information was avail able to assist them with their task. Microwave ovens utilized a technology that was completely different from conventional and weIl-understood cook ing procedures. The interaction of microwaves with foods behaved in a mysterious fashion, and product development was, at best, guesswork and, at least, trial and error. This lack of knowledge of both the microwave oven and microwave-food interaction spurred the development of this text. Microwave technology was developed du ring World War 11 when the best scientists in the United States were cloistered at the radiation labora tory at MIT. In the 1940s virtuaIly aIl the technology that could impact the microwave oven was developed and weIl understood. The problem was in the translation of this decades-old knowledge to rules and techniques to be used for food product development. Early authors such as Püschner and Copson wrote texts primarily on applications to industrial processing. This knowledge lay faIlow as these texts went out of print.

Microwave Processing of Foods: Challenges, Advances and Prospects by Anubhav Pratap Singh,Ferruh Erdogdu,Shaojin Wang,Hosahalli S. Ramaswamy Pdf

The application of microwaves has been a major advancement in food processing over the past 50 years, and yet to date there have been very few publications focusing exclusively on microwave processing and none covering the latest technological and theoretical advances. Microwave Processing of Foods: Challenges, Advances and Prospects fills this gap by covering all aspects of the microwave processing of foods including the latest novel advances in this fast-moving subject area. This text presents multidisciplinary views of novel microwave systems, novel process modeling, engineering and design, as well as practical approaches on methodology and findings regarding the effect of microwave on the food quality and process safety. The volume comprises several chapters on the newest processing and machinery aspects, engineering design and process modeling, process safety and novel processes based on full or partial application of microwave in food processing. This book also considers economic aspects, food quality issues and future trends of microwave application in the food industry. Each chapter in this text functions as a critical review, presenting the current state of knowledge based on the personal experience of the authors and the current state of published research in one particular area of food processing. While the main focus is on processing, the physical principles and the chemical and microbiological basis of the process are also covered, plus the impact of the technology on the quality and safety of food. This book presents a comprehensive and fully up-to-date reference on the principles and applications of microwave processing of food products.

Microwave Chemical and Materials Processing by Satoshi Horikoshi,Robert F. Schiffmann,Jun Fukushima,Nick Serpone Pdf

The principal aim of this book is to introduce chemists through a tutorial approach to the use of microwaves by examining several experiments of microwave chemistry and materials processing. It will subsequently enable chemists to fashion their own experiments in microwave chemistry or materials processing. Microwave heating has become a popular methodology in introducing thermal energy in chemical reactions and material processing in laboratory-scale experiments. Several research cases where microwave heating has been used in a wide range of fields have been reported, including organic synthesis, polymers, nanomaterials, biomaterials, and ceramic sintering, among others. In most cases, microwave equipment is used as a simple heat source. Therefore the principal benefits of microwave radiation have seldom been taken advantage of. One reason is the necessity to understand the nature of electromagnetism, microwave engineering, and thermodynamics. However, it is difficult for a chemist to appreciate these in a short time, so they act as barriers for the chemist who might take an interest in the use of microwave radiation. This book helps to overcome these barriers by using figures and diagrams instead of equations as much as possible.
