New York Yankees Home Runs by Mitchell S. Soivenski Pdf

The New York Yankees are synonymous with home runs. With more than 14,000 round-trippers to its credit, New York has out-homered the next most prolific franchise by more than 1,000--despite the Yankees' having been in existence for 20 fewer years. This book organizes information on the many New York home runs into detail- and summary-oriented tables. Part I covers various situational categories (e.g., grand-slam, leadoff, walk-off), special dates (Opening Day, Memorial Day, players' birthdays), and significant player and team records (Gehrig's 23 career grand-slams, five or more Yankees homers in a game). Parts II and III provide career summaries (number of seasons with 20-plus homers, by position in the batting order) and franchise totals (home runs by ballpark and opponent); and Part IV covers season-by-season totals and yearly leaders. Also included are appendices for inside-the-park and bounce home runs and home runs allowed by the Yankees.

Larkhill's Wartime Locators by Massimo Mangilli-Climpson Pdf

"Artillery survey suffered during the pacifist inter-war period but the war in North Africa highlighted its importance. By the end of 1942 ten major survey units had been formed. Nine were conventional serving in all the main theatres, including the Far East. They played a key part in victories such as El Alamein, Anzio, Caen and Imphal, with their flash-spotting, sound-ranging and surveying of gun lines. A tenth regiment was secretly involved tracing the flight of Hitlers V1 and V2 rockets in order to locate their launch bases. These ‘soldier-scientists were all trained at the School of Survey, Larkhill, on Salisbury Plain. Their work took them to the front line and a considerable number were casualties or became POWs. This is the story of the contribution of these 4,000 men who made up the Survey Regiments. It tells of the heroes, such as Robert (Tug) Wilson of the SBS and the skilful men whose actions under the most difficult and dangerous conditions have received little acknowledgement until now."

The Use of Words in Context by John W. Black Pdf

The Speech Situation is a term worn with age in the teaching of public speaking in America. That it is comprised of occasion, speaker, and topic is a gross oversimplification. It also includes challenge, anxiety, emotion, fear, responsibility, faults of memory, and instants of pride. Out of the circumstances arise an increase in heart rate, a change in blood pressure, an abnormal pattern of breathing, a noticeable build up in perspiration, and an ongoing evaluation. For students this may be merely a grade or perhaps a series of evaluative remarks, possibly addressed both to the speaker and the other participants, the audience. It may entail a replaying of a record of the speech, indeed a videotape. Most important is the lasting impression that remains with all of the participants. What of the vocabulary of the speaker under the circumstances of the speech situation? This speaker - in the major portions of this work we may say, "this young man" - has spent time seeking an appropriate topic. He has outlined a composition around a central idea or thesis. He has marshaled evidence, details. He has framed an opening paragraph. He has been admonished not to give an essay, but to strive for audience contact, interpersonal communication. He makes his audible approach through his vocabulary and accompanying phonology. Under the tension, the speaker repeats; he adds meaningless vocalizations in periods that might logically be pauses. There are slips of the tongue. At worst, failing, he withdraws to await another day.

All-Time Nines by Don Cox Pdf

Who was the best baseball team of all time? This timeless question can most effectively be answered through comprehensive analysis of baseball statistics. Over the course of a season, winning teams tend to score more runs while allowing fewer than their opponents. The greater the difference in runs per game, the more a team can be expected to win. Comparing this data for the top five percent of Major League nines from 1901 through 2014, this book argues that runs above league average is the best statistic for ranking teams. The author sorts 220 teams by era, franchise and skills—hitting, fielding, baserunning, pitching—evaluates their strengths and weaknesses and assigns numerical values to each player’s skills to demonstrate how they contributed to team performance.

Calculus for the Life Sciences: A Modeling Approach by James L. Cornette,Ralph A. Ackerman Pdf

Calculus for the Life Sciences is an entire reimagining of the standard calculus sequence with the needs of life science students as the fundamental organizing principle. Those needs, according to the National Academy of Science, include: the mathematical concepts of change, modeling, equilibria and stability, structure of a system, interactions among components, data and measurement, visualization, and algorithms. This book addresses, in a deep and significant way, every concept on that list. The book begins with a primer on modeling in the biological realm and biological modeling is the theme and frame for the entire book. The authors build models of bacterial growth, light penetration through a column of water, and dynamics of a colony of mold in the first few pages. In each case there is actual data that needs fitting. In the case of the mold colony that data is a set of photographs of the colony growing on a ruled sheet of graph paper and the students need to make their own approximations. Fundamental questions about the nature of mathematical modeling—trying to approximate a real-world phenomenon with an equation—are all laid out for the students to wrestle with. The authors have produced a beautifully written introduction to the uses of mathematics in the life sciences. The exposition is crystalline, the problems are overwhelmingly from biology and interesting and rich, and the emphasis on modeling is pervasive.
