Millington and Sutherland Williams on the Proceeds of Crime by Lightfoot Pdf

The proceeds of crime field continues to be one of the fastest moving areas of the law within the criminal justice system. New cases are reported on a weekly, sometimes daily, basis as well as frequently in the major law reports. Millington and Sutherland Williams on the Proceeds of Crime offers an extensive, authorative examination of proceeds of crime and confiscation legislation. It provides an easily navigable step-by-step approach that considers how the legislation is geared to ensuring that criminals do not benefit from their crimes financially, as well as detailed coverage of every stage of the confiscation process. The newest edition has been fully updated to include all important legislative changes since the publication of the fifth edition. A chapter dedicated to sanctions has been added, the impact of crypto currencies is examined, analysis is provided of Law Commission reports on Supicious Activity Reports and the Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA), and there is a new chapter focusing on part six of POCA. Previous editions have been recognised by governments, both national and international, for their focus on the importance of asset recovery as a vital weapon in the fight against organised crime and corruption. Millington and Sutherland Williams on The Proceeds of Crime is used in the Academy of European Law (ERA) as well as the libraries of the Chief Justices of Jamaica, Barbados, and Papua New Guinea. The book serves as an international guide, assisting barristers, solicitors, practitioners, and academics in navigating this often-complex area of the law.

The Social Life of Coffee by Brian Cowan Pdf

What induced the British to adopt foreign coffee-drinking customs in the seventeenth century? Why did an entirely new social institution, the coffeehouse, emerge as the primary place for consumption of this new drink? In this lively book, Brian Cowan locates the answers to these questions in the particularly British combination of curiosity, commerce, and civil society. Cowan provides the definitive account of the origins of coffee drinking and coffeehouse society, and in so doing he reshapes our understanding of the commercial and consumer revolutions in Britain during the long Stuart century. Britain’s virtuosi, gentlemanly patrons of the arts and sciences, were profoundly interested in things strange and exotic. Cowan explores how such virtuosi spurred initial consumer interest in coffee and invented the social template for the first coffeehouses. As the coffeehouse evolved, rising to take a central role in British commercial and civil society, the virtuosi were also transformed by their own invention.

Uppermost Canada by R. Alan Douglas Pdf

Uppermost Canada examines the historical, cultural, and social history of the Canadian portion of the Detroit River community in the first half of the nineteenth century. The phrase "Uppermost Canada," denoting the western frontier of Upper Canada (modern Ontario), was applied to the Canadian shore of the Detroit River during the War of 1812 by a British officer, who attributed it to President James Madison. The Western District was one of the partly-judicial, partly-governmental municipal units combining contradictory arisocratic and democratic traditions into which the province was divided until 1850. With its substantial French-Canadian population and its veneer of British officialdom, in close proximity to a newly American outpost, the Western District was potentially the most unstable. Despite all however, Alan Douglas demonstrates that the Western District endured without apparent change longer than any of the others.

Psychiatry by Konstantinos N. Fountoulakis Pdf

This book was the end product of life experiences, thoughts and intellectual wanderings of the author, who through his career and for the last twenty years was always serving all the three aspects of a Psychiatrist: He is a clinician, a researcher and an academic teacher. The book includes a comprehensive history of Psychiatry since antiquity and until today, with an emphasis not only on main events but also specifically and with much detail and explanations, on the chain of events that led to a particular development. At the center of this work is the question ‘What is mental illness?’ and ‘Does free will exist?’. These are questions which tantalize Psychiatrists, neuroscientists, psychologists, philosophers, patients and their families and the sensitive and educated lay persons alike. Thus, the book includes a comprehensive review and systematic elaboration on the definition and the concept of mental illness, a detailed discussion on the issue of free will as well as the state of the art of contemporary Psychiatry and the socio-political currents it has provoked. Finally the book includes a description of the academic, social and professional status of Psychiatry and Psychiatrists and a view of future needs and possible developments. A last moment addition was the chapter on conspiracy theories, as a consequence of the experience with the social media and the public response to the COVID-19 outbreak which coincided with the final stage of the preparation of the book. Their study is an excellent opportunity to dig deep into the relation among human psychology, mental health, the society and politics and to swim in intellectually dangerous waters.
