Building the Intentional University by Stephen M. Kosslyn,Ben Nelson Pdf

How to rebuild higher education from the ground up for the twenty-first century. Higher education is in crisis. It is too expensive, ineffective, and impractical for many of the world's students. But how would you reinvent it for the twenty-first century—how would you build it from the ground up? Many have speculated about changing higher education, but Minerva has actually created a new kind of university program. Its founders raised the funding, assembled the team, devised the curriculum and pedagogy, recruited the students, hired the faculty, and implemented a bold vision of a new and improved higher education. This book explains that vision and how it is being realized. The Minerva curriculum focuses on “practical knowledge” (knowledge students can use to adapt to a changing world); its pedagogy is based on scientific research on learning; it uses a novel technology platform to deliver small seminars in real time; and it offers a hybrid residential model where students live together, rotating through seven cities around the world. Minerva equips students with the cognitive tools they need to succeed in the world after graduation, building the core competencies of critical thinking, creative thinking, effective communication, and effective interaction. The book offers readers both the story of this grand and sweeping idea and a blueprint for transforming higher education.

Owl of Minerva by Mary Midgley Pdf

One of the UK's foremost moral philosophers, Mary Midgley recounts her remarkable story in this elegiac and moving account of friendships found and lost, bitter philosophical battles and of a profound love of teaching. In spite of her many books and public profile, little is known about Mary's life. Part of a famous generation of women philosophers that includes Elizabeth Anscombe, Philippa Foot, Mary Warnock and Iris Murdoch, Midgley tells us in vivid and humorous fashion how they cut a swathe through the arid landscape of 1950s British Philosophy, writing and arguing about the grand themes of character, beauty and the meaning of rudeness. As the mother of three children, her journey during the 1950s and 1960s was one of a woman fighting to combine a professional career with raising a family. In startling contrast to many of the academic stars of her generation, we learn that Midgley nearly became a novelist and started writing philosophy only when in her fifties, suggesting that Minerva’s owl really does fly at dusk. Charting the highs and lows of philosophy and academia in Britain, this publication sheds light on Mary’s close friends, her moral philosophy and her meetings with major philosophers, including Wittgenstein and Isaiah Berlin.

Mission to Minerva by James P. Hogan Pdf

TRANSPORTED ACROSS THE MUILTIVERSE. Over light-years of space and 50,000 years back in time, to create a new history.... Only to find there was no way back. Earth is adapting to a future of amicable coexistence with the advanced aliens from Thurien, descended from ancestors who once inhabited Minerva, a vanished planet of the Solar System. The plans of the distantly related humans on the rogue world Jevlen to eliminate their ancient Terran rivals and take over the Thurien system of worlds have been thwarted, but the mystery remains of how it was possible for the fleeing Jevlenese leaders to have been flung back across space and time to reappear at Minerva before the time of its destruction. Victor Hunt and a group of his colleagues travel to Thurien to conduct a joint investigation with the alien scientists into the strange physics of interconnectedness between the countless alternate universes that constitute ultimate reality. When their discoveries lead first to bizarre communication with bewildered counterparts in other universes, and thence to the possibility of physical travel, the notion is conceived of sending a mission back to the former world of Minerva with the startling objective of creating a new family of realities in which its destruction is avoided. But Imares Broghuilio, the deposed Jevlenese leader, along with several thousand dedicated followers with five heavily armed starships, are already there. And they have a score to settle. Minerva's Shield by Derek Hart Pdf

The world has come to an end. Or has it? What starts out as a long overdue father-and-son vacation immediately becomes more complicated, when they uncover an unusual coin in the dirt. Frighteningly, its as if the planet is thrown into upheaval over this innocent discovery. All of a sudden, the FBI shows up at their door asking lots of questions, planting the seeds of paranoia, doubt and worry. The neighbors start acting strangely, almost on the verge of panic. The nearby military base is abandoned overnight and the weather has never been so unpredictable. As everything falls apart around them, no one is certain what is happening. There is no cell phone service, no radio or TV, no form of communication whatsoever. What should the people prepare for - the ever-popular zombie apocalypse, or global economic collapse, another American civil war, nuclear or biological terrorist attack, super volcano or titanic earthquake, planet-wide meteorological disaster, impending asteroid collision, or perhaps an alien invasion from outer space? While the masses flee in every direction, a small organized group finds refuge in a corporate data bunker, which was once a military facility. Here, thirty people are thrown together, perhaps by fate or coincidence, they come to wait out the final days, the dreaded apocalypse. Without warning or explanation, their lives are spared by the power of the mysterious coin Minervas Shield. When they emerge from inside the mountain, however, they find a world relatively undamaged. Yet there is no trace that people ever existed. There are no bodies, no skeletons, not a single trace. It is a world without humans. This diverse community of survivors quickly bands together to gather supplies and hammer out a new existence, where they appear to be the only living souls. Still, they are curious about what really happened that fateful day. And someone, or something, is watching them as well.

But when Minerva goes to warn her father that there's thieves on their shores, she finds the very same pirate. In her home. Wearing a suit. "Ah, there she is." His smile is wicked. "Just the lady I was hoping to see." She's not certain what stolen goods this thief is after, but one thing is clear. On Paul Ricoeur by Richard Kearney Pdf

Paul Ricoeur is one of the giants of contemporary continental philosophy and one of the most enduring and wide-ranging thinkers in the twentieth century, publishing major works ranging from existentialism and phenomenology to psychoanalysis, politics, religion and the theory of language. Richard Kearney offers a critical engagement with the work of Ricoeur, beginning with a general introduction to his hermeneutic philosophy. Part one explores some of the main themes in Ricouer's thought under six headings: phenomenology and hermeneutics; language and imagination; myth and tradition; ideology and utopia; evil and alterity; poetics and ethics. The second part comprises five dialogical exchanges which Kearney has conducted with Ricoeur over the last three decades (1977-2003), charting and explaining his intellectual itinerary. This book is aimed at a broad student readership as well as the general intelligent reader interested in knowing more about one of the most enduring major figures in contemporary continental philosophy.

Minerva: The Miscarriage of the Brain by Johanna Hedva Pdf

MINERVA THE MISCARRIAGE OF THE BRAIN collects a decade of work from artist, musician, and author of ON HELL, Johanna Hedva. In plays, performances, an encyclopedia, essays, autohagiography, hypnagogic, and hypnapompic poems--in texts whose bodies drift and delight in form--Minerva tunnels into mysticism, madness, motherhood, and magic. Minerva gets dirty with the mess of gender and genius. She does the labor of sleep and dreams. She odysseys through Los Angeles, shapeshifting in stygian night and waking up to wail in the light. With illustrations by Isabelle Albuquerque. "Purchase or thrash: 'genius.' Relocate an 'Ancient Greek text' to 'contemporary Los Angeles.' Does a geographical cure excrete ghosts, 'visions of strange bodies poised and moving,' or does it produce a 'deep, reverberating sound?' Johanna Hedva's MINERVA begins in this place and we go there, which is to say a reader does. Or might: float/trust this process of alchemical, pelvic, infinite, sub-maternal, and ceramic change."--Bhanu Kapil "Reverberations of this book outlast everything else in our ears, 'what felt like a skinned, feral cat breaching from my chest.' Definitely MINERVA, goddess of genius and poems! Celestial messenger Johanna Hedva gives up gold after the cult following of their book ON HELL. A (god)dess-sized reconstruction of the world we only thought we knew! Welcome home, poets!"--CA Conrad "Blood is spilled: the writer, the reader, the family, and the lovers are all brutally disemboweled. Abandonment, undeath, catharsis, and genius are all held to trial. Theatre, ritual, and memoir are cleaved open by sex, race, and the (mortal) body. MINERVA, as in all their writing, sets Hedva's astounding, somatic wisdom against an urgent, anarchistic wound. Let yourself belong to it."--Patrick Staff "Can an artist's personal history of their performances be a history of performance art? MINERVA THE MISCARRIAGE OF THE BRAIN traces both a decade of Johanna Hedva's performed works and the edges of that genre's history: bringing the intimate, fearful, feminine, traumatized, queer, and real-life-lived to look and admire and poke at the assumptions about what performance art has been: genius, unreachable, masculine, and hermetic. Hedva is both a wonderful writer in the school of Helene Cixous, Marina Tsvetaeva, and Clarice Lispector: and like them, a creator of spaces we didn't know that we're allowed."--Alexandra Grant "This text is a trouble-maker. Well, that's not quite right. The trouble was already there, we were just trying to hang a tapestry over it, maybe shove it into the dirt of our potted plant. Hedva has that knack, though, for revealing, for turning something we'd rather keep silent into a beautiful wail."--Jessa Crispin "A book about viscera and black ash; 'Blood and guts. . . soul and tears.' Dark matter and sea foam blessed by 'the tentacles of sea plants when they move. . .' This is the literature of THE VOID. I will treasure MINERVA as I do the most revelatory writings of Artaud."--Lara Mimosa Montes "I have this fantasy that upon our deaths, we each are replaced with a museum. And that in the museum, is a record, in relics, of what we made, tried to make, failed to make, and what made us. Johanna Hedvas MINERVA affirms and animates this fantasy, overlapping rapturous corporeality with the posthumous archive. It is the nomination of a life's work of laying bare negative space by way of the nebulization of the body into a museum. (MINERVA, by the way, is the goddess of everything.)"--Brandon Shimoda Poetry. Fiction. Drama. Literary Nonfiction. California Interest. Asian & Asian American Studies. Women's Studies. "Few of us really appreciate the full power of math--the extent to which its influence is not only in every office and every home, but also in every courtroom and hospital ward. Owl of Minerva by Eric Pankey Pdf

A Walt Whitman Award–winning poet seeks the spiritual within everyday physical objects in this luminous collection. Taking its name from the Roman goddess of wisdom and her companion bird, Owl of Minerva turns astonishingly precise attention to the physical world, scouring it for evidence of the spiritual as the poet travels through such places as Appalachia, New England, Venice, Spain, the Caribbean, and the American Midwest. Along the way, Eric Pankey ponders mortality, religious narratives and iconography, the continued press of childhood on the present, and the simultaneous violence and beauty of the natural world. At the book’s core are three ambitious poems titled “The Complete List of Everything,” which together offer an extended vision of American longing and connection—as well as a window into the sort of compendium of images and moments a sustained devotion to poetry can yield. “The hope was to construct // A coherent totality of meaning from odds / And ends,” Pankey writes, and so much of this book is about the difficult work of constructing meaning from the available material all around us. This book is an extraordinary example of lyric-meditative journaling—a large and profound collection by a brilliant poet writing at the height of his powers. “Pankey remains one of our leading practitioners of the metaphysical poem.” —C. Dale Young, author of Prometeo

Mobilizing Minerva by Kimberly Jensen Pdf

American women did more than pursue roles as soldiers, doctors, and nurses during World War I. Mobilizing Minerva: American Women in the First World War reveals women's motivations for fighting for full citizenship rights both on and off the battlefield. The war provided chances for women to participate in the military, but also in other male-dominated career paths. Intense discussions of rape, methods of protecting women, and proper gender roles abound as Kimberly Jensen draws from rich case studies to show how female thinkers and activists wove wartime choices into long-standing debates about woman suffrage and economic parity. The war created new urgency in these debates, and Jensen forcefully presents the case of women participants and activists: women's involvement in the obligation of citizens to defend the state validated their right of full female citizenship.
