Saints, Miracles and the Image by Sandra Cardarelli,Laura Fenelli Pdf
In recent years the study of miraculous images has experienced a substantial re-evaluation of their importance as powerful agents of divine intercession and assistance in Renaissance society. Nonetheless, aspects related to the genesis, devotional use and preferences of these images remain only broadly outlined and geographically constrained. In parallel with the great veneration for miracle-performing Marian and Christological imagery, other saintly figures became the objects of widespread devotion on account of their protective and curative powers, and the images of these saints became cult objects themselves.0This volume fills a void in current art historical research and examines how miraculous images and the imagery of healing saints were crucial to the creation of individual, corporate and collective identities in Florence, Siena, Rome, Naples and other lesser researched Italian centres. The essays in this collection address aspects related to the development of hagiographies, iconographies, cult of relics, and devotion of healing saints. Moreover, it considers imagery related to miraculous events also in terms of material culture in the private and public domains. The images will therefore be studied both as aesthetic objects and as cult objects, in order to interrogate the often tense relationship between mechanical?vision? and cultural?visuality?.0While dealing with specific curative, protective, and miraculous episodes related to the exposition of sacred images, this book unravels questions of patronage, authorship, agency, and tradition
"Throughout the ages, in all parts of the world, the messages of miracle have been heard. They appeal to the child within us all and make the world more loving and wondrous than it often seems. But there is no man or woman living to whom miracles are out of reach. If we believe otherwise, it is due to the illusion that simplicity and innocence are lost." Rodney Charles "Anything is possible. This book covers the lives of hundreds of miracle workers and leaves you feeling like you know them all personally. God doesn't need humans to work miracles for Him, but as veteran Catholic author Patricia Treece shows, it certainly seems His good pleasure to perform great miracles by means of human prayers and human hands. For more than a quarter century, Treece, America's most experienced and revered saint-watcher, has gathered numerous fascinating reports of miraculous healings brought about in our lifetime. Among them is the complete 2005 cure of Sr. Marie Simon-Pierre's advanced Parkinson's disease after she appealed for healing to the just-deceased Pope John Paul II. After intense scrutiny, the Vatican declared her healing miraculous, leading to John Paul's beatification and canonization. Here, too, are tales of scores of lesser-known healings brought to light by Treece's own investigations into little-known official Vatican documents, as well as from her many interviews with living witnesses of miraculous healings, including several whose healings have been accepted by the Vatican as grounds for the canonization of their intercessors. You'll read vivid but sober accounts of the lives and of the miracles wrought by some of the greatest healers of all, with details of a host of authenticated healings by André Bessette, John Bosco, Frances Cabrini, Solanus Casey, John Paul II, Padre Pio, Elizabeth Seton, Francis Xavier Seelos, Fulton Sheen, Mother Teresa, and other good men and women blessed by God with remarkable healing charisms. The healings documented here are not hasty judgments made by gullible, overwrought believers; they are instantaneous, complete, and permanent cures for which scientific medicine still has no explanations cures that also meet the Vatican's stringent seven-part test of authenticity. When faced with a woman skeptical about whether she could be cured, the healer Solanus Casey is reported to have said, Don't you know that God can cure cancer just as easily as the common cold? Not only can God do this: These pages show that He is doing it ... so often and so obviously that even in our day miraculous healings are giving pause to hardened skeptics and bringing joy to the hearts of believers who rightly see in them overwhelming evidence of God's love for each of us. May they bring joy to your heart as well and renew the confidence in His love that God yearns for you to have!
Saints and Their Miracles in Late Antique Gaul by Raymond Van Dam Pdf
Saints' cults, with their focus on miraculous healings and pilgrimages, were not only a distinctive feature of Christian religion in fifth-and sixth-century Gaul but also a vital force in political and social life. Here Raymond Van Dam uses accounts of miracles performed by SS. Martin, Julian, and Hilary to provide a vivid and comprehensive depiction of some of the most influential saints' cults. Viewed within the context of ongoing tensions between paganism and Christianity and between Frankish kings and bishops, these cults tell much about the struggle for authority, the forming of communities, and the concept of sin and redemption in late Roman Gaul. Van Dam begins by describing the origins of the three cults, and discusses the career of Bishop Gregory of Tours, who benefited from the support of various patron saints and in turn promoted their cults. He then treats the political and religious dimensions of healing miracles--including their relation to Catholic theology and their use by bishops to challenge royal authority--and of pilgrimages to saints' shrines. The miracle stories, collected mainly by Gregory of Tours, appear in their first complete English translations.

Leadership and Community in Late Antique Gaul by Raymond Van Dam Pdf
The rise of Christianity to the dominant position it held in the Middle Ages remains a paradoxical achievement. Early Christian communities in Gaul had been so restrictive that they sometimes persecuted misfits with accusations of heresy. Yet by the fifth century Gallic aristocrats were becoming bishops to enhance their prestige; and by the sixth century Christian relic cults provided the most comprehensive idiom for articulating values and conventions. To strengthen its appeal, Christianity had absorbed the ideologies of secular authority already familiar in Gallic society.

"Scott has written a magnificent book on the realities of religious healing. He brings sensibility, reason, impressive insight, and the best information to bear—qualities seldom manifested in the centuries of claim, cynicism, and controversy on the topic. His analysis is destined to raise the level of discourse on dramatic religious experiences."—Neil Smelser, author of The Odyssey Experience
