Misadventures of a Scientist's Wife by Frances Townes Pdf

"The Twentieth Century has been a time of great discovery for both men and women. Charles Townes, the scientist of Adventures of a Scientist, received the Nobel Prize in 1964 for discovering the principles behind the Laser, the practical applications of which has transformed modern civilization. Frances Townes, his wife, has also been on a trail of discovery, searching for the core of individual relatedness that must lie behind and beyond technology if our civilization is to survive. Her work with homeless and runaway youth in Berkeley, California, has been ground-breaking. Born in 1916, just as women were getting the vote, Frances confronted the conflicting demands of her generation. Her personal experiences, broader struggles and triumphs have helped redefine the role of women in the modern world."--pub. desc.

From ROCKET SCIENTISTS WE WERE NOT… and Other Stories: “We were goofballs, and magnets for mischief. Pinheads, really. You name it…” In these stories of misadventures from small town mid-20th century America, three lifelong buddies celebra

Not Exactly Rocket Scientists II by Gilbert E. Schill, , John W. MacIlroy,,Robert D. Hamilton, Pdf

From Not Exactly Rocket Scientists II: The Totally Unnecessary Sequel "Of the thousands of choices I've had to make in my life, one of the most important was deciding not to dig up Lenny Bruce." From the Schill story "Where's Los Angeles?" In this sequel to Not Exactly Rocket Scientists and Other Stories, three lifelong friends, all eventual graduates of the University of Virginia, rush headlong into the chaos of the mid-sixties. The headwinds would be fickle and strong, but they make it through the frothy nonsense of the Aquarian Age with an unshakable faith in friendship, a healthy sense of the ridiculous, a lot of luck, and over twenty new "mostly true" stories. You will encounter old friends and meet new ones too: guys named Squeak and Snatcher from a house called Delta, a character named Rasputin from a university named Virginia, a curse named McFarland, and even a proverb from Turkey. And you will travel from a naked beach in Denmark to a bar above Lake Cayuga, with stops along the way from the Alamo to Tijuana, although you will not actually visit the grave of Lenny Bruce. But you will share a little rye whiskey with Jerry Lee Lewis, attend the trial of a rascally mouse, and learn how to make a martini properly. So buckle up and come along for the ride. "The fraternity brothers in the 1978 film Animal House would love this rip-roaringly funny collection. You will nod approvingly at the lessons of friendship, the value of mentors with a sense of humor, and the lasting influence and love of place, concluding that this road trip was well worth the time." --Landis Wade, author of Deadly Declarations and host of Charlotte Readers Podcast "This is a marvelous set of tales of a different time in America...equal parts daring, naive, foolish, and ambitious. With results usually unplanned, but often hilarious, you're sure to chuckle at many, and laugh long and out loud at many more." --R. M. Burgess, author of six novels including the successful Roxy Reid series "You think it's easy, making people laugh out loud with the written word? Think about it: most of the humor you've read makes you smile, feel amused, bemused, charmed, entertained. Not Exactly Rocket Scientists II makes you erupt in laughter. Out-loud, no-holds-barred yukking it up. The kind of laughter that makes people in the other room call out, "What in the world's going on in there?" The three authors have raised self-effacing humor to a masterpiece level. I'm telling you, buy Not Exactly Rocket Scientists II ..." --Barry Dickson, author of Maybe Today

The Tell-Tale Start by Gordon McAlpine Pdf

Meet Edgar and Allan Poe -- twelve-year-old identical twins, the great-great-great-great-grandnephews of Edgar Allan Poe. They look and act so much alike that they're almost one mischievous, prank-playing boy in two bodies. When their beloved black cat, Roderick Usher, is kidnapped and transported to the Midwest, Edgar and Allan convince their guardians that it's time for a road trip. Along the way, mayhem and mystery ensue, as well as deeper questions: What is the boys' telepathic connection? Is Edgar Allan Poe himself reaching out to them from the Great Beyond? And why has a mad scientist been spying on the Poe family for years? With a mix of literary humor, mystery, a little quantum physics, and fun extras like fortune cookie messages, letters in code, license plate clues -- and playful illustrations thoughout -- this series opener is a perfect choice for smart, funny tweens who love the Time Warp Trio, Roald Dahl, and Lemony Snicket.

The Architecture of Error by Francesca Hughes Pdf

Why the rise of redundant precision in architecture and the accompanying fear of error are key to understanding the discipline's needs, anxieties and desires. When architects draw even brick walls to six decimal places with software designed to cut lenses, it is clear that the logic that once organized relations between precision and material error in construction has unraveled. Precision, already a promiscuous term, seems now to have been uncoupled from its contract with truthfulness. Meanwhile error, and the always-political space of its dissent, has reconfigured itself. In The Architecture of Error Francesca Hughes argues that behind the architect's acute fetishization of redundant precision lies a special fear of physical error. What if we were to consider the pivotal cultural and technological transformations of modernism to have been driven not so much by the causes its narratives declare, she asks, as by an unspoken horror of loss of control over error, material life, and everything that matter stands for? Hughes traces the rising intolerance of material vagaries—from the removal of ornament to digitalized fabrication—that produced the blind rejection of organic materials, the proliferation of material testing, and the rhetorical obstacles that blighted cybernetics. Why is it, she asks, that the more we cornered physical error, the more we feared it? Hughes's analysis of redundant precision exposes an architecture of fear whose politics must be called into question. Proposing error as a new category for architectural thought, Hughes draws on other disciplines and practices that have interrogated precision and failure, citing the work of scientists Nancy Cartwright and Evelyn Fox Keller and visual artists Gordon Matta-Clark, Barbara Hepworth, Rachel Whiteread, and others. These non-architect practitioners, she argues, show that error need not be excluded and precision can be made accountable.

Science Fiction and Fantasy Book Review by Neil Barron,R. Reginald Pdf

"Science Fiction & Fantasy Book Review" was founded in 1979 to provide comprehensive coverage of all the major and minor books being released in the genre at that time. This was the golden era of SF publishing, with a thousand titles (old and new) hitting the stands and the bookshelves each and every year. From the older classics to the newest speculative fiction, this was the period when the best and the brightest shined forth their talents. SF&FBR included reviews by writers in the field, by amateur critics, and by litterateurs and University professors. Over a thousand books were covered during the single year of publication, many of them having been reviewed no where else, before or since. The January 1980 issue includes a comprehensive index of all the works featured during the preceding year. This reprint will be a welcome addition to the literature of science fiction and fantasy criticism. Neil Barron is a retired bibliographer and literary critic, editor of the acclaimed "Anatomy of Wonder" series. Robert Reginald was the publisher for twenty-five years of Borgo Press, and has authored over 110 books of his own."

A Biographical Bibliography. Explorers, Scientists & Visitors In the World's Karst 852 BC to the Present by Christine Ballinger,Trevor Shaw Pdf

V mnogih drugih le spodbuda in sprostitev v sicer napornem življenju. Toda v vsakem primeru so ista oseba in isti možgani uživali oboje; in oboje ju je osebnostno izoblikovalo. Razumemo jih lahko le s pomočjo tukaj zbranih bibliografskih virov.
