Mixed Martial Arts and the Law by Jason J. Cruz Pdf

Barbaric. Savage. Violent. Words often used by critics to describe the sport of mixed martial arts. To this can be added lucrative, popular and flourishing. MMA has seen astronomical growth since the 2000s, spurred on by its biggest promotion, the Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC). Along the way, legal issues have plagued the sport. This book provides an overview of the most important cases and controversies arising both inside and outside of the cage--antitrust suits by fighters against promoters, fighters suing other fighters, drug testing, contractual issues, and the need for federal regulation.

Martial Arts Book by IntroBooks Pdf

The martial art of boxing is being practiced from the era of ancient Thira, maybe even before that. There are several purposes of practicing martial arts. The main goal is practicing combat since martial arts are a combination of codified systems and traditions of various combat techniques. The main reasons behind practicing martial arts are for self-defense, military and law enforcement. Sometimes it is even practiced to attain spiritual and mental peace and development. In some nations, martial arts are practiced and performed to serve entertainment in order to preserve the intangible cultural heritage of that particular nation. In historical documents of eastern Asia, martial arts are associated with their own fighting style or fighting arts. However, the roots of original martial arts are found in the European combat system as early as in beginning of second half of sixteenth century. The term “Martial Art” is derived from Latin origins. In Latin, it is referred as “Arts of Mars”. Mars is the Roman god of war. There were many arguments made by several authors that fighting arts or fighting system would be more suitable for this ancient art. On the basis of their application or their creation by professional fighters, martial arts are never “martial”.

Realistic Martial Arts for Violence and Peace: Law, Enforcement, Defense by Michael DeMarco, M.A. Pdf

Criminals, police, military forces, and civilians practice martial arts which often utilize weapons. One major difference is weather or not the weapons are handled according to legal guidelines. This special anthology includes insightful writings that focus on aspects of martial arts as they are practiced and used by different people on both sides of the law. Certainly most practicing a martial art are doing so primarily for their health or as a sport. Perhaps they have an interest in self-defense, but often their practice methods are not realistic enough to be truely effective. For this reason, Friman and Polland’s first chapter deals with the concern for realistic methods for training martial artists, particularly those involved in law enforcement. In the following chapter on “The Art of Regulation,” Dr. Friman argues that the martial arts are more likely to face government regulation when authorities perceive them as posing challenges to the state’s monopoly over the means to create and maintain order. In the quest for maintaining order, Alex Levitas shows in the next chapter that martial arts weapons are widely used by police forces in many countries. Applications are illustrated by photographs credited to noted law enforcement pioneers in this area, including Terrence Winston, Robert Fabrey, Roy Bedard, and Robert Koga. Two chapters by Noah Nunberg examine the practical legal aspects of using martial arts techniques while training in the martial arts studio or in defending oneself on the street. Assault and battery are examined in depth as to potential criminal and civil liabilities that may arise. Specific cases and hypothetical situations are referred to for reference and insight. Dr. Román and Dr. García write about the scope and legal framework of penitentiary self-defense. This kind of self-defense is defined by the unique characteristics of a confinement context and a very specific regulation aimed at preserving the integrity of prisoners and penitentiary staff, as well as prison facilities. A technical section is also included. In the system known as Comprehensive Penitentiary Defense, Dr. Román presents techniques which professionals in this field must master and know how to apply when they face any hazardous situation. These techniques go from peaceful conflict resolution, assertiveness, or body language to joint control, immobilization, or pressures. In the face of regulating martial art practice and weapons useage, the final chapter by Peter Hobart inspects the right to bear arms. Existing criminal laws and recent weapons bans have made it increasingly problematic for legitimate martial artists to own, use, and transport the tools of their trade. This survey of existing state and national weapons laws is intended to help make martial arts practitioners aware of these legal issues. All who read this book—whether involved in professions of law enforcement, military branches, or as a martial arts instructor or practitioner—will find each chapter of vital importance. We hope you will enjoy this anthology as it provides excellent coverage of aspects of the martial arts that are rarely discussed but have profound practicality.

Combat Sports by David L. Hudson Jr. Pdf

Fistic combat represents the greatest human drama in all of sport. Roman gladiators thrilled citizens and emperors alike when they entered the octagon to face an intense, life-threatening experience. Boxing, the sport of kings, also has its roots in the ancient civilizations of Greece and Rome. Banned in 500 A.D. by the Emperor Theodoric, it resurfaced twelve centuries later in England. John Milton praised it as a noble art for building character in young men, and sports writer A.J. Leibling dubbed it the Sweet Science. Many of its major protagonists - men such as Joe Louis, Rocky Marciano and Muhammad Ali - have become transcendent, near-mythic heroes. But boxing is not the only combat sport, and mixed martial arts, in all their ferocious beauty, represent the fastest growing sports genre in the world. Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) has joined boxing in paying seven figures to some of its champions, and draws millions in its pay-per-view events. This book details leading figures in boxing, sumo wrestling, kickboxing, Greco-Roman wrestling, and mixed martial arts (including organizations such as Ultimate Fighting, PRIDE, K-1, Total Combat, and SportFighting). Over 150 entries cover champions, contenders, and other famous combatants from all over the world, as well as legendary promoters, managers, trainers, and events. Also included in this encyclopedia are sidebars on controversies, highlights, brief bios, and other noteworthy events, along with a general timeline. .

The Mauler by Alexander Gustafsson Pdf

As told to Leif Eriksson and Martin Svensson. Alexander Gustafsson grew up in Arboga, a small town in Sweden. A country boy, he started boxing when he was 10 - winning the national youth medal at the age of 16. After a handful of run-ins with the law he began practicing mixed martial arts and working his way up the ranks of the UFC. Nicknamed The Mauler by his training partners, due to his power, killer instinct and somewhat recklessness whilst fighting; this is the story of Gustafssons struggle to succeed in one of the world's most challenging sports. Family, friends, and the Christian faith all play decisive rolls. But above all, it's Alexander's unique talent for martial arts which, in just a few short years, sees him become one of the UFC's main poster boys. The Mauler is a frank and at times painful account of a young man rapidly heading off the rails, and of his fight to reach the top of his game in an effort to change his life forever.
