Models and Methodologies Appropriate to the Study of Outcomes of Schooling in Ontario's Multicultural Society by Paul Anisef,Ontario. Ministry of Education Pdf

This report explicates conceptual models of schools outcomes and related research methodologies in order to increase an understanding of the diversity and structure of desired outcomes. The complex interrelationship among models of education, desired outcomes, methods of achieving those outcomes, and methods of studying the results is approached from socio-historical, theoretical and empirical viewpoints. An historical overview of education in Ontario documents the interrelationship between societal change and educational reform as well as the cyclic nature of educational philosophies. Student outcomes are defined through a typology and a discussion of current educational policy goals in light of that typology. Three major sociological models of education--structural functionalism, conflict theory, and the interpretive paradigm--are reviewed with respect to the kinds of outcomes and determinants stressed and characteristic research methodologies. The substantive areas of transition to work, academic achievement, and multiculturalism are examined to further the investigation of the utility of larger models for studying specific outcomes. The definition and measurement of models and outcomes by Canadian researchers in the past is examined through an inventory of Canadian data sets identified in the literature, through the Ontario Educational Research Information System (ONTERIS), through all major Canadian data archives, and through Ontario school boards. The results of a survey of education practitioners include perceptions of desirable outcomes and speak to the needs of future research. Two major conclusions and six specific recommendations are posited. The inventory of data sets and the interview schedule for the study are appended. A reference list is provided. (Author/BZ)

Transitions by Paul Anisef,Paul Axelrod Pdf

How do Canadian students perceive and prepare for the world of work? To what extent do gender, race, region and social class shape their aspirations, opportunities, and experiences? Transitions: Schooling and Employment in Canada presents new research by scholars from across Canada engaged in the study of youth, schooling, employment and social change. The aim of the book is to describe the multiple transitions that young adults encounter in their journey from school to the world of paid employment. Different contexts and conditions affect these transitions and the authors employ historical, qualitative and quantitative methodologies in identifying them. Particular attention is paid to the themes of gender, socio-economic status, ethnocultural origin, and region. In analyzing their findings, the authors apply a wide range of theories, including developmental, sociological, and social/psychological. In addition, a number of the essays have implications for policy-making in the areas of education and employment. The contributors to this volume explore the experiences of rural youth in Nova Scotia, blacks in Toronto, and high school students in Vancouver. They suggest new approaches to researching native communities and the lives of female adolescents.
