Does Civilization Need Religion? by Reinhold Niebuhr Pdf

Does Civilization Need Religion? sets out from the fact that religion's inability to make its ethical and social resources available for the solution of the moral problems of modern civilization is one, and the neglected one, of the two chief causes responsible for its debilitated condition. It is convinced that if Christian idealists are to make religion socially effective they will be forced to detach themselves from the dominant secular desires of the nations as well as from the greed of economic groups. It aims to show that though neither the orthodox nor the modern wing of the Christian Church seems capable of initiating a genuine revival which will evolve a morality capable of challenging and maintaining itself against the dominant desires of modern civilization's needs, there are resources in the Christian religion which make it the inevitable basis of any spiritual regeneration of Western civilization. Does Civilization Need Religion? maintains that the task of redeeming Western society rests in a peculiar sense upon Christianity, which has reduced the eternal conflict between self-assertion and self-denial to the paradox of self-assertion through self-denial and made the Cross the symbol of life's highest achievement. It is persuaded that the idea of a potent but yet suffering divine ideal which is defeated by the world but gains its victory in the defeat must continue to remain basic in any morally creative worldview.

Christianity and Modern Civilization by William Samuel Lilly Pdf

Excerpt from Christianity and Modern Civilization: Being Some Chapters in European History, With an Introductory Dialogue on the Philosophy of History In 1886 the Author published a work in two volumes entitled Chapters in European History. It has long been out of print, and, for several reasons, he has not seen well to republish it in its original form. In this book a considerable portion of it finds place: viz. the Chapters on The Christian Revolution, The Turning-point of the Middle Ages, and The Age of Faith - all being more or less rewritten - as well as the Introductory Dialogue on the Philosophy of History. The Chapters on The Nascent Church, The Inquisition, and Holy Matrimony have been reclaimed, by the kind permission of Mr. James Knowles, from the Nineteenth Century, where they originally appeared, and have received various alterations and additions. The Chapter on The Age of the Martyrs, with the exception of a few pages, is now published for the first time. The Dedicatory Letter prefixed to the original work is retained, in an abridged form, as a tribute of gratitude and affection to a friend now no more. The Influence of the Bible on Civilisation by Ernst von Dobschütz Pdf

"The Influence of the Bible on Civilisation" by Ernst von Dobschütz addresses the question of how modern civilisation and Christianity can go on in harmony. Meant as a precursor to a full biblical history, this text examines how religion and religious texts have changed the way society works. Its implications also provoke debate and thought about what would happen if the bible were erased from memory.

How Christianity Saved Civilization by Mike Aquilina,James L. Papandrea Pdf

Ancient Rome’s brutal culture exploited the weak and considered human life expendable. Women were used as property; unwanted children were left on the streets to die. Four centuries later, even ordinary men and women prospered in what had become a vigorous new Christian society – a society that served the vulnerable, exalted women, treasured virtue, and loved peace. Faith had triumphed. Truth was proclaimed. And on this rock-solid foundation, Christian society flourished in the West for the next 1500 years. These eye-opening pages document the many ways in which Christians penetrated and civilized that debased Roman empire, introducing then-radical notions such as the equal dignity of women, respect for life, protection of the weak and vulnerable, and the obligation of rulers to serve those they rule and maximize their freedom. Here you’ll learn about the seven specific areas where any paganism, ancient or modern, is particularly vulnerable. They provide a roadmap for modern Christians to reclaim for the Faith our own neo-pagan modern culture. Facing an overwhelmingly dark and hostile culture, Rome’s early Christians took the steps necessary to transform it. Their struggles and the hard lessons they learned – documented here – afford us hope that, by imitating their example, we may do the same for our culture today.

The World's Witness to Jesus Christ by John Williams Pdf

Excerpt from The World's Witness to Jesus Christ: The Power of Christianity in Developing Modern Civilization In the two lectures which it has become my duty to deliver, I propose, by God's blessing, to present one form of the general historical argu ment which seems to me to be a strong one; and that not so much in the negative way of defence, as in the positive way of assertion. I am not at all sure that the charge will not be brought against positions and method alike, that they are quite old-fashioned and out of date. I am altogether sure that they ought neither to be forgotten nor abandoned. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
